We spent 2 weeks at this resort. and had great service and the 2 weeks were relaxing. We had great service from one of the bar staff, Noelvis. He went the extra mile to help us and was very personable and friendly. We had good experience with all staff, however Noelvis stood out. We had preferred status and had services of a butler. Hector was our butler and did an outstanding job of anticipating and asking our needs and then fulfilling those wants and needs. Pros: Room: The room was very comfortable the best thing being the location. Restaurants: Hector set up reservations for us, which allowed us to skip any lines. We really like the fact that reservations were not required, but it was very nice not to have to worry about long waits at the restaurants. The food was well prepared, nicely presented and very tasty. Cons: Masks: We were very cognizant of wearing masks in indoor spaces but there were incidents where masks were mandatory but people did approach without masks. My compliments to Coco café where I did forget my mask 1 time and they asked me and then offed me a mask when I offered to return to my room to get my mask. PCR test: Waiting for the results was a stressful experience finally receiving the results about 4 hours before out shuttle to the airport was scheduled. SUMMARY: We had a good holiday, met some great people and were pampered by the staff. The cons listed were minor irritants only and will certainly consider Dreams Onyx for future holidays.

We stayed for 10 days. We are experienced Caribbean travellers and have never vacationed at such a poorly run resort that proclaims to be a 5* . First off, why should you upgrade to the preferred club? This was offered to us at check-in for an extra US$800. I think people are caught up with the phrase ‘personal butler’ and fall for this. Very easy to get into restaurants without a reservation. Beach is quite nice and as described elsewhere, the beach at the sister resort (Breathless) is rocky. Pools are well laid out and the water park is a must visit. Entertainment was fun - lots of audience participation events. This includes daytime as well as nighttime entertainment. (Shout-out to Ricky Bobby - phenomenal, energetic, friendly, competent) Food was ok. Buffet offered a good selection. Best restaurant was the Blue Water Grill. The worst part was the booking of a PCR test for our home flight. As noted in other reviews, lineups are incredible for both booking and then waiting for the test to be administered. Lab employees were never on time. When a hotel staff member is approached re: this failing, they wash their hands of any responsibility. ‘That’s the hospital’s job’. Sorry mate but your hotel contracted this lab to provide this service for YOUR guests. Results come nail-bitingly close to flight time. Housekeeping - always wondered when or if they would make up our room on a daily basis. Not sure if they are short staffed or just incompetent management. Room - something seemed to be wrong all the time. Plugged drain, TV remote not working, no battery in weigh scale (only interested for the luggage!), key pad on the safe decided when it would work (or not), coffee maker didn’t work and not replaced till our last day. Finally, the hotel charged our credit card CDN$539 for something known only to God. No peso conversion provided. We discovered this after we returned home and as of this review, we are working on a charge back. Our advice would be to bring cash for any excursions or services you plan on taking. Keep your credit card out of any transaction. Needless to say we are very disappointed in the resort but we had a great time in the sun, sand and surf. I will look elsewhere for a true 5* resort in the DR. UPDATE: We found out the charge to our credit card was for the PCR tests for 5 people. We paid for family members too. Forgot to mention that these tests ate US$80 each. The price of travelling in a pandemic

I write this review with the aim to give a fair and accurate review of the hotel, service and experience we had. The reason we booked Dreams Onxy was because it is part of AM resorts and i had an exceptional holiday at Secrets Riviera Maya in Mexico a few years ago. I was expecting a similar experience due to being part of AM resorts. My understanding was that secrets is adults only and Dreams is for families. We also chose Onyx as it had breathless hotel next door, offering more options and things to do. Our first time to the DR. We stayed at dreams onyx initially for 1 week 15-22 November. Unfortunately i got an ear infection and could not fly home, and ended up, courtesty of travel insurance staying in Breathless next door from 22nd- 27th November. We booked 1 week through TUI and paid £350 extra for a preferred club pool view and balcony. With a TUI discount etc it was £1100 each, altogether was £2200. Which i thought was pretty decent for a 5 star all inclusive with preferred privileges. We took £500 worth of US dollars for spending money which was $700. Id definitely recommend taking USD as opposed to DOP dominican pesos. We flew from Manchester, UK, direct to Punta Cana. We completed the dominican eticket before we flew, and ordered day 2 lateral flow tests for £15 each from chronomics. The serial numbers from these were put on the passenger locator form we filled out the day we flew home. We also completed another dominican eticket. Alcohol was included with TUI on the plane which was a suprise bonus! The flight was 8 hours and had TV screens and plenty movies etc to watch. We asked how much a private taxi would be and was quoted $70 so we took the included TUI transfer. This was around 45 minutes and stopped at 3 resorts before ours. Upon arrival, as we were preferred we were handed wet face cloths which was lovely and refreshing. A really nice touch. The temperature was 31°c and hot! We were preferred club and escorted into the lobby and to a private reception room, where we sat down and greeted with welcome drinks. We were checked in and provided with a room key etc and resort information. This same room had a small bar, toilets and food buffet area. This was a nice place to revisit during the holiday of an evening. We were greeted by a private butler named Aris. He explained he would take care of us during our stay and to text him on whats app if we had any questions, issues and for reservations in the restaurants. He said goodbye and we got a golf buggy with our luggage on the back to our room. The golf buggy ride was such a great first impression. The buggies are available to take you to and from breathless from the lobby if you wish. However its only a short walk over. The room (5249) on second floor, was  clean and modern. When you walked in it was a wardrobe on left, with an open bathroom area on the right. Then walk into the bedroom and the balcony looked onto the preferred pool. Nice room. The mini fridge has coke, fanta, OJ, water, local presidente beers, and peanut m&ms/mars bar(usa milkyway bar) and small tub original pringles. The nice touch was a 350ml bottle of Brugal anejo rum. There was a hot tub/bath on the balcony. The view was stunning onto the preferred pool and the beach/sea. The only downside was the shower was pretty outdated and a bit dirty. It was clean enough but lots of mouldy/grimey tiles and the water drain was a bit grim. There is water bottles by the sink as you cannot use the water from the tap for brushing your teeth or drinking. Overall i would say the housekeeping service was good but not amazing. I dont think they even changed our bedsheets the whole week.  We tipped the housekeeper everyday but then it became clear there is a separate person who cleans room, does turndown service and refills mini fridge. All 3 expect a tip. It was almost like if you only tipped a few dollars a day, they would only give basic cleaning and some days not fill fridge at all. To be perfectly honest it is of my opinion they should be providing this service as it is a 5 star hotel, despite tips. The tips should be a bonus. I found that if i wrote a note, and left a $5 tip and put it inside fridge they would give us plenty of water and more pringles/m&ms.Towels were only changed if you left them on the floor. It wasnt bad service but i feel it could have been a little bit better. In other reviews i read people said they had towel animals, rose petals etc. There was nice slippers and bathrobes in the room which was a nice touch. There is an iron and ironing board too. There was 24 hour room service, but we only ordered breakfast once which was nice. I am very very pleased we upgraded to preferred as it was so worth it. I dont think i would have liked this hotel if we didnt have it. Mainly as the non preferred areas did not have great sunloungers (no cushions), basic unbranded alcohol and no butler making your reservations. There was a really nice preferred club bar near our room. It had a bar and 3 large lounge areas with TVs. We went there most nights before dinner for drinks as it was served in glass. The prelude bar by the restaurants only serves drinks in plastic glasses and is quite busy. The preferred pool was brilliant. It really is stunning. Wooden loungers and nice concrete tiles. The wooden loungers with padded cushions. There is waiter service and a swim up bar. The bar waiter server called Junior who made our stay. We tipped him around $10 a day (more on our last day) and he was very funny and made sure we had great service throughout the day. He was really nice and gave us brilliant service, including outstanding drinks. Just bare in mind. They have premium brands at the bar but you have to request them. For example i would ask for margaritas made with grand marnier. Or mudslides with absolut vodka etc. If you dont ask they will use the cheap nasty spirits. They have a drink of the day which is decent too. They also have private bali beds which are $100 a day. We decided against it as we didnt think it was worth it but they are nice. I would say i got to the pool area after breakfast and there were enough loungers. The day we went on an excursion and returned around 2 we could not get any loungers at the preferred pool unfortunately. This area is adults only and was really beautiful, relaxing and had fantastic waiter service. This really made our holiday. Our belongings were safe and we often took walks down to the beach and for a swim, which is only a minute walk. The beach was stunning. When we arrived there was very little seaweed. However towards the end of the week we noticed it increasing. However there is a tractor which goes up and down the beach raking it up. I loved getting up for sunrise on the beach which was around 6.45 most days. So so beautiful and 100% recommend doing. You cannot really see the sunset from the hotel (around 6pm). There are plenty of loungers on the beach with a beach bar, and plenty of activities like vollyball, basket ball etc. The sea water was very warm and the sand very nice. No shells. You can walk up or down the beach and walk past the other resorts too with no issues. There are some men who are trying to sell items. Beware the cigars are fake! They dont bother you if you say no thank you. There is a waterpark too behind the gym which has 3 slides and a lazy river. There is a stage for entertainment and a swim up bar. The area the waterpark is doesnt get much sun and is in the shade most of the day. The drinks and service at the swim up bar were great. This was a nice place to come for a bit of fun, and a great addition to the hotel. With regards to the Preffered club butler service. We didnt really use Aris that much apart from he insisted he would make a reservation for our dinners. This was nice as we didnt have to wait around much like i saw other people having to do. Aris made our trip memorable as this trip was for my birthday, in the mexican restaurant they brought out a birthday cake and it was very delicious! Nice touch. Overall the food wasn't bad but i would say it was just okay. There was plenty on offer but to me nothing had the wow factor that you expect in a 5 star resort. All the restaurants have a QR code you scan to get the menu up on your phone. The main buffet carnival has a large amount of choices for everyone tastes. I especially liked the spanish omlettes and the mimosa/bloody mary station. We ate breakfast most days in tamarindo which is the mexican restaurant but it for preferred club guests for breakfast and lunch. The lunch here was probably my favourite food. They do 2 types of sushi, fresh salmon and a great chicken cordon bleu. We went here most days for breakfast and lunch as this food was top notch. There is a coffee boy here who had us in fits of laughter most days. He would always be so swift and fast with refilling coffee and water, and would make conversation and tell jokes. Unfortunately i cannot remember his name but he definitely deserves recognition. Theres an italian, french, Mediterranean, mexican and asian restaurant too. The asian does a teppenyaki show which is fun to watch. Theres a burger bar in the lobby area but we didnt try this. There's an ice cream parlour and coffee shop by the lobby area which were both lovely. They did not actually have a real commercial barister espresso coffee machine which i thought was very bizarre for a coffee shop! The lobby has a sports bar which was fun with pool tables.  Theres a grill by the beach which does burgers, hot dogs, nachos etc if you dont want to get out of swimwear and go to a restaurant for lunch. Like i said before the food was ok but nothing was outstanding unfortunately. Adults can go over to breathless for food. We found the breathless buffet amazing. There was even lobster. I could not find lobster anywhere in Onxy. The main difference is that they serve it to you and cook stuff fresh. It was amazing here for breakfast too. Just another level compared to onxy. At breathless they even temperature checked and hand sanitized before you went in anywhere. We tried their teppenyaki, italian and steakhouse too. Id say the food is better at breathless but it is quite similar to onyx. At some point over our stay we both had bad tummies with diarrhea. Hard to say what caused it. Perhaps the water, food or maybe the ice? Definitely take with you immodium and dioralite, along with paracetamol, anti acids, ear drops etc. The hotel shop is very expensive. Shampoo was $14!!! Make sure you take plenty of sun cream as the sun is strong too. We took factor 50 and 30 and still got amazing deep tans. When it comes to entertainment of an evening after dinner we would head to breathless as there was more going on. They have some good shows with live music band, dancing, singing, people on stilts, juggling etc. Their bar area would turn into a sort of nightclub too. Theres a small casino upstairs along with a sports bar and a outdoor terrace. Their coffee shop was really good too and served lovely baileys coffees. Unfortunately i got a really bad ear infection. I believe this was from the preferred pool as i didnt really swim in the sea and it was the only pool i swam in. Im not blaming the hotel in anyway but this has never happened to me before. I saw the resort doctor who said it was very inflammed and she couldnt see inside and referred me to a hospital. It cost $180 for the doctor consultation. The taxi there and back was $120 but the driver waited. I saw a consultant in A&E who cleaned my ears with saline solution and confirmed bilateral otitis media (2 inner ear infections). I had the feeling of water in my ears which would not come out and muffled hearing. It got that bad i was having a lot of pain in and around my ears which went down to my jaw. I didnt want to risk flying home due to the airpressure and the fact i could not equalise my ears. The doctor said i could not fly and recommended i stayed overnight on an antibiotic IV drip. I politely declined and accepted antibiotic tablets and an anti inflammatory injection. The cost of this was $822. The doctor recommended i revisit the hotel doctor on wednesday to get a fit to fly letter. Our travel insurance paid for us to have 3 nights in breathless to see what the dr said on wednesday. The further dr consultation cost $120. I was not deemed fit to fly as my ears were still swollen. I returned on friday for a further dr consultation for another $120, and was allowed to return. We flew home on the TUI flight to london Gatwick where we had a taxi waiting to take us to Manchester airport for our car. I must reiterate make sure you have adequate travel insurance and get reciepts for everything. I never ever anticipated this happening and was very grateful it was not something more severe. When i was in the hospital i saw some american tourist who had broken her shoulder and required surgery. TUI were fantastic and said if we needed a return flight and booked it with them 24 hours before departure it would only cost £115 each. However our insurance paid for us directly a higher price. Breathless room was different but quite nice. There were complimentary toiletries that Onxy didnt have like, conditioner, toothpaste, razor, toothbrush etc. This was a nice touch. We were in room 1236 directly overlooking the main party pool. But it wasnt too noisy. The  turndown service gave us rose petals over the bed and it was a really lovely touch. The room in onxy was more modern but breathless was more cosy and cleaner. The mini fridge was the same stuff apart from there was club soda and tonic water included. There is a party show everyday at 1500 at the breathless main pool. It can be party central but it is fun to go and watch for entertainment. On saturday there was a white party on the beach under the moonlight with a dj. This was really nice and the dancers but a great show on. All in all it was a good trip. We got what we wanted from an all inclusive. Plenty of options for food, entertainment and variety of pools to chose from. The beach was beautiful. We had amazing weather and got great deep tans. It was 31°c everyday and only rained slightly at night. We didnt need jackets. It was always warm at night. I wouldnt return in a hurry unless it there was a very cheap deal. I was expecting secrets quality and we did not get this. This may be my fault for expecting more. Ive been to a RIU hotel all inclusive before in sal, cape verde and that was way way better than dreams/breathless in comparison. I could not fault any of the staff as everyone was very friendly and polite. I did notice the garden team had the grounds looking stunning. There were people out every day pruning and taking care of the gardens. I did notice there is a dress code for restaurants including men wearing trousers etc but this was nit enforced at all and i saw lots of men wearing shorts. I would recomend going preferred club at onxy here as you have full access to breathless anyway. I hope this review helps when making a decision to stay here.

We had a great trip minus a few bumps. The resort was beautiful and most of the staff was incredible. Our bumps had to do with the check in process. The gentleman that checked us in was not as friendly as the rest of the staff. We spent our days at the beach and over our week there, we had amazing service from Randy, Edwin, and Inoel. They made sure our drinks stayed full and made sure our days were enjoyable! They were fantastic!!! Our food at the restaurants was always good, we traveled with someone with Celiac and while some options were listed as gluten free, we were told none were safe for her. They did try to accommodate, but there was a lot of problems with breakfast/lunch at the buffet. The staff was great at breakfast, we usually skipped lunch, unfortunately Estevan is the only name of the staff I remember from our meals I can remember, but everyone was amazing. Our bumps had to do with check-in and a water pipe problem that left us without hot water for two days, which could happen anywhere. Overall it was a great experience and the staff was great!
