San Juan, Puerto Rico273 contributions113 helpful votes
Over the last three months, I spent three weekends in Santo Domingo, a short flight or 12 hour ferry ride from San Juan, Puerto Rico, my home base. Stayed at a different hotel each stay (each no more than $100 per night), every hotel a 2 to 5 minute walk to El Conde (a pedestrian street and center of the colonial zone, very close to a huge variety of restaurant, nightlife and cultural options). The room had a bit of a moldy smell, but the weekend I was there, Santo Domingo was flooded by rain storm after rain storm - so maybe not anything you would notice under normal weather conditions. The building is not as "newly renovated" as the other hotels I stayed in, but when it comes to an ambiance and architecture that is a perfect fit for a stay in the colonial sector, this is the place to be. The restaurant onsite is a bit of a joke - a menu where a $12 tuna sandwich was the highlight (surprise, surprise, I never saw a customer or employee in the restaurant area other than for the limited breakfast included in some room price options), the glass of wine I ordered in the small lobby bar came from a bottle probably opened 3 months earlier, but who cares, there are dozens of bars and restaurants within spitting distance. The room itself (I opted for the cheapest room available) was generous in size, accessible by elevator or steps, and had all the basics (safe, nice bathroom, decent bed, and cable TV). The Queen of England would probably pick a more sterile and modern option, but if you are an Indiana Jones type of person, this may become your favorite place to stay in the colonial zone. And if you are single, and you meet someone you may want to invite to your room, the hotel offers you the option to do so. For a $25 fee. Most other hotels do not permit anyone other than registered guests in the rooms. Guests leave their ID with the reception, so its not a policy that impacts your or the other guests' safety. In conclusion, a perfect location, a historic building and an ambiance that perfectly matches the surroundings. BTW, Uber is the absolute best choice for a return trip to the airport from any hotel in Santo Domingo - if you prefer a taxi, the hotel can arrange that as another safe but slightly pricier option as well. (The hotel offers some higher priced rooms/suites as well, some with very large balcony terraces - a somewhat unique option in this area for those who really needs a lot of space.)

This review is written 7 years later. Back in Jan 2017, I made the mistake of booking for the date of arrival. We had taken a red eye flight into Punta Cana and it was 100% my mistake that we did not actually have a -no, two -room(s) booked for "the night before." I still remember the great kindness we were shown by the late night/early morning hotel staff as they struggled to ready a room that was not-being-used because of shower repair issues. They changed sheets, found a roll-a-cot for our then 20-something year old daughter, and waived off all of our gratitude. And they totally moved us into the proper roomS as early as they could the next morning ... leaving us free to tourist as best as we could with our red-eye depleted energies. I am currently culling travel paper clutter, and revisiting memories. This is a fond one - my mistake was greeted with great humanity.

STAY AWAY!!! Absolutely terrible and they cheated us. Don't be fooled by the pictures, this place is a dump! First room we were assigned: (1) A/C didn't work. It was blazing hot. (2) The person sent up to fix the A/C (the doorman, Luis) came into the room, played with the thermostat for 5 seconds then walked out of the room without looking at us or speaking. He did literally nothing. (3) TV didn't work. We complained and they assigned us a second room with a better A/C: (1) No hot water. (2) Showerhead broken so that it sprayed water all over the bathroom. (3) Hardest bed I have EVER slept on. (4) Construction site right outside the window. Neither of us could sleep that night, so we decided to find another hotel. We offered to pay for the first night but politely asked to be refunded the last three nights. This is when the hotel manager cheated us: First she said that we would have to take it up with Expedia. I said that I would have to ask the credit card company to cancel the charge. Then suddenly she was able to issue a refund after all. She gave us a print-out to sign where we would have paid for TWO nights not one. When I pointed out this "mistake" she did another print-out charging us for a single night. The price was still way too high. She claimed that she could only refund us the taxes for the first night and we would have to take it up with Expedia. This was bogus but we were sick of arguing and left. Just looked at my credit card statement: They charged us the full amount for the room anyway. I'm going to get the charge canceled.

The stay was very unpleasant the location great area across from supermarket and on the strip in colonial zone. however for the dates 10/06 thru 10/09 the television was down the complete time and the front desk kept stating that they has someone working on the issue. but spoke with another guest who stated that it has been out for a month. Behind the hotel they were jack hammering the street from about 730am until 6pm at night. The breakfast was so very limited I only ate the pineapple the workers in the restaurant didn't speak any English at all I just asked for a take away box. The internet was extremely slow the safe in the hotel unable to add a code to lock important papers. The room had a refrigerator but no microwave. They shutdown the lobby and lock they iron gates at about 11pm every night just became difficult leaving and returning. In the morning the staff and very loud with conversations at 8am that carried down the hall and in to the rooms unable to rest during the day time. The bar in the lobby was never staffed and air conditioning went out in lobby and bar went out the second day there extremely hot in lobby and bar area. Again the roof top pool was not open yet again. I dont think I will book this location again on my next trip at all.

The room was huge. The safe needed to be bolted to something. I made my complaint, nevertheless, they kept me in the same room. You have to go to the lobby for ice and ask for it. Included breakfast was decent for the price. Location is in the heart of Parque Colón. They charge a fee per guest per night after 10PM.

We stayed three nights here on a recent trip. As other TA reviewers had warned, the not-so-friendly lady at reception assigned us a room on the ground floor, just off the reception area. The room was small and dark, and would have frequent foot traffic going by. We asked for a different room, but was told there weren't any, but when she saw we weren't going to accept the room offered, said we could look at another room. This was a room at the top of several flights of stone stairs at the back of the hotel, but was larger and had two windows, so we took it. The two windows gave lots of natural light and being at the back, was very quiet. However, the room was sparsely furnished with just one chair and small table in addition to the bed. No bottled or purified water is supplied, but there's a mini-fridge, so buy water at the nearby supermarket (less than a 5 minute walk away). The fellow who "helped" with the bags was grumpy that he had to climb the stairs, even though he only carried the largest bag while we carried our remaining bags. We still tipped him. Because we had other friends arriving to stay at the hotel later, we saw that the hotel has a warren of rooms of different sizes and quality, and some were more modern and better furnished, grouped around larger more attractive courtyards, and with elevator access. Perhaps request in advance one of these rooms, and don't accept small dark noisy rooms on the ground floor.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights during our visit to the Zone Colonial, the hotel was just ok but for the price it was fine, we only paid US$70 per night for a huge room with a queen size bed. The staff were very nice, friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was included, we went the first morning but it wasn’t of interest even though there were scrambled eggs, fried bologna, potatoes, fruit, cereal, toast, coffee and tea, the toaster was a waffle maker, lol - it sounds better than it looked, lol. The next time we visit the Zone Colonial we will increase the budget somewhat and hopefully stay at the Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando. When we were in the Zone Colonial we looked at rooms at this hotel that were very nice for double the money but the hotel is first class and beautiful. It depends on what you want and when you are staying. I originally was going to book at the Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando but when it came time to book the hotel the rate went from a very reasonable US$110 to an over budget US$170 per night.

I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the hotel. Originally this was planned for Easter but some issues meant it had to be postponed, too late to get a free cancelation, however the hotel agreed to move our dates so all good. The rooms are clean and smart. Plenty of space. The bathroom very large, just took a few minutes for the hot water to get to the room. AC was very good and the room had a fridge as well as extra pillows and blankets. There is a roof top pool which is very nice to relax in. Breakfast was served in a little courtyard and my only complaint was there was no toaster, just a waffle machine. However, a reasonable selection available for breakfast. Parking is secure and easy to access. The hotel is a 30 second walk from the shopping street and a Nacional Supermarket. 5mins from the main restaurant area. All in all, a good hotel in a good location.

On the 1st night of my 8-day trip, my room became infested with Bugs. I was moved from a room with 2 Queen Beds to a room with 1 King Bed, which was approximately $400 cheaper, but never received a refund as promised by the Hotel Manager. When the incident occurred, I was instructed by the Manager to contact Booking.com for assistance, because she couldn't do anything on her end. When I contacted Booking.com, they said that the Manager notified them that she offered to credit 2 Nights back to my Credit Card, which was not true. Booking.com repeatedly attempted to contact the Manager again about the refund, but she would not return their emails. At check-out, I asked if she notified Booking.com that I would receive a 2- night room credit, and she said Yes and that I would receive the 2-night room credit on my Credit Card within a few days, but that never happened. Beware of this Hotel, because there are much better hotels to stay at in Santo Domingo.

Perfect location, just a few steps to Colonial District attractions, shops, pedestrian area. Lovely colonial style building, with gardens and roof pool. Pretty comfy huge room and bathroom, daily cleaned (unfortunately with no good gsm signal in the room ) and fresh tasty buffet breakfast served in the hotel restaurant /garden. In other world, absolutely suggested it.
