The people are very friendly that's maybe the most important . Yes, the rooms are dark as most of the time in Cuba rooms go onto a hallway or veranda and often no window to the outside .
The price is not the cheapest but as the location is very central you can walk just about everywhere.
As everywhere else in Cuba the shower ( water) is sometimes just a trickle.
Breakfast on the top Terrasse is interesting because you can see into the surrounding houses.
Cleanliness is pretty good for Cuban Standard.
One of the very good thing at Esters is that you can send an E mail for a reservation before you get there. Only very few Casas so have e mail.
It is located close to Malecon and you get a feeling of the real Habana since it isn't in the downtown area but close to it.
We were here in low season and it was a bit pricier than other casas we stayed in.
just arrived (very tired from Italy) Estehr informed us that the room was no longer available (mom was not good, her son was back, etc) and after some discussion she prepared us her personal room (dark and full of Esther's things). The day after we changed the room but it was dark as well , and in the middle of a renovation with outbuildings noises, all this for 30 CUC per night. The breakfast is poor and cost 5 CUC more. So the 3rd night we decided for another casa particular.
The only good thing of this casa is the position but there are many houses in the area, more worthy and less expensive
The pros: the room was nice looking with en-suite and the location was pretty good.
The cons:
- The breakfast is overpriced and was by far the worst we had during our entire stay. (expect a bit of fruit, a few slices of baguette with a hole in and a solitary egg with tea/coffee for 5CUC)
-You don't have a main door key so can't come and go, we were made to feel like we were a real inconvenience for going about our day.
-Loud building work (which was just unfortunate timing on our part) but we were woken by it which was annoying. It seems to be a fairly large project so be warned!
-Cuba is pretty safe but given builders were in and out all day I was pretty irritated to see they left our passports lying around on a sideboard (they need them when you check in)
-The worst part by far was Esther and her terrible attitude. We were tolerated at best. On some occasions she ignored us and even made some fairly rude comments.
She made it clear she was doing it "for the money" and it's a means to an end, we haven't felt so unwelcome in a long time.
That said, if we went back to Havana and were in desperate need of a room I'd consider it due to location (but skip the breakfast)
We had the top floor room next to the terrace, small but perfect for us, clean and not loud although the terrace is right outside, good aircon.
Perfect for me to "sneak" out early (jetlag) and do yoga on the top roof terrace whilst the cook is preparing breakfast on the lower terrace!
What surprised me was that we booked the Centro area because it was between Vedado and Vieja and was a bit better-priced than the Old Town. But Casa Esther is really central to the Old Town as well, nice no-traffic street leads in 2-3 minutes to Parque Central and Floridita bar and the beginning of Calle Obispo (the happening pedestrian-zone street leading all through the Old Town).
One thing to note (not a complaint, just a note): We have never had a slower breakfast service anywhere! Fun to experience and nice way to get into the spirit of vacation, except our last day when we had fixed times to catch and serving a small breakfast took ca 2 hours...
But - this also allowed us to have nice long conversations with other guests of the hotel, we shared a table one day with a Norwegian couple (where he was from Denmark and she from Switzerland...) and then with some nice French people who we (of course) met again on the street in Trinidad.
The location is good. You can reach most of the sightseeings on foot. But the street, where the casa is situated is quite dirty. Though the casa itself is clean and cozy.
Wonderful Private house with all the flavour of Old Habana. best Location.
Confortable rooms with A/C and private bathroom. Very good price including Breakfast.
Esther the Owner is a wonderful woman that keeps a very confortable house full of flavour. Great family feeling. Very interesting to spend some time talking with her. Well known actrees and involved in directing a sensacional art space for young upcoming cuban actors.
Dont look for luxury, here but it is definately a place to spend a couple of days in la Habana and get to know their people :)
The Staff that work at the house are fabulous, great loving people. Everything is very relaxed
Ms. Esther and her employees really put some effort to make our stay special. One of the best things we experienced was home made food because breakfast was included and Oh my God! I don't even have words to describe how good was the food😋 Fresh blended juice from tropical fruits with black, strong cuban coffee and toast with eggs with guacamole on the side is really what your body needs in the morning to make it through day since tropical heat. Besides the breakfast, they have options for more meals that are definitely worth trying.
The size of the room was just enough for our stay there and it's of big importance that they have AC.
Besides the utilities, when we were choosing a place we were a little concerned about choosing good area in Old Habana but Casa Esther was the right choice because it's safe and they have night security doorman as well. All touristy stuff are on walking distance from the house.
