As soon as I heard that the volcano was erupting again, I immediately booked a cabin. I couldn’t justify the $300 for a room at the Volcano House. The cabin only cost $92 after taxes and fees! It had a double bed, bunk bed, a couple shelves, a light, and electric plug (which was perfect for charging our phones). It was tiny, but I knew that when I booked it. The campground was located about 5 minutes away from the national park. It was fully booked, but we didn’t have any problems accessing the shared toilets or showers. Each restroom consisted of 2 toilets and 1 shower. I thought the cabin and restroom could use a little work cleanliness wise, but since it is categorized as camping and not an actual hotel, I guess I can agree that it meets camping standards. I checked in right at 3:00 which is check in time, and to my surprise they said that my cabin wasn’t ready yet, but they were able to give me another cabin right away. Overall, I was happy with my stay and would gladly do this again.

The operators of this place have a potential touristic gem in their hands. An amazing location, a historical building, inexpensive labor and the best food products nature can offer. Unfortunately, the place is operated like a cheap B&B in the midwest. Dilapidated rooms, poor service and food that was served 30 years ago. Still, the place is clean, and the location is awesome.

We had two rooms for one night and as others have stated, the location can't be beat. My total with tax for those rooms was $700, which is pretty ridiculous, considering it is like staying in a basic hotel room (think red roof inn, motel 6 kind of vibe). Small rooms, windows open (but not really cleaned sills), low quality towels. Note that our two dining experiences were just fine -- dinner at their casual restaurant and breakfast in the larger room the next morning -- good food good wait staff. No one told us this in advance, but all party members checking in must show an ID and their safe travels hawaii "thumbs up". When the hotel called us a week in advance to confirm our stay, I just wish they had mentioned it. Caught my adult sons off guard, so they had to dig out wallets, phones, etc. when they just thought they were headed to their room after a long day of hiking.

I vacillated on what rating to give Volcano House. I ended up with 4…. Because …. Location! We were hiking on the volcano by 6:30 AM! There is such ambience at Volcano House. There are two things that could have made it better: 1, No Masks in common places - ugh - not their fault but it would have been great to walk around maskless since we were vaccinated. And 2. Drinks by the Pele fire. (Would’ve been scrumptious!) I have to address the staff - they were awesome. They were operating with a shortage - as is everyone in the US. They truly rallied. The hotel was scrupulously clean. In fact - all staff did the best with the deck they’d been dealt. While we loved our location and our patio- we didn’t love our stained towels- although clean, bleach could’ve done wonders for the yellow stains. Our faux leather love seat that was ripped to shreds left a little to be desired - not a fault of the staff though. I gave them a 4 because of the staff’s attitude- cleanliness - and location.

Aloha Shannon, thank you for the four stars! We are so pleased you enjoyed your time here. We appreciate the compliments on our staff, they do work hard. Thank you for bringing the stained towels to our attention we will address that immediately. As for the love seat, yes some of the furniture is in disrepair, we had planned to replace everything last year but ended up being closed. We do have plans to replace many of the furnishings next Spring. Mahalo nui loa.

Worse than horrible. Booked supposedly one of their “best rooms”. Room smelled of smoke. Upholstery on couch peeling everywhere and rotting. Walked right out, was offered a 20% discount but demanded and eventually received full refund and got a room in Hilo. Manager of this place doesn’t belong in the business. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.
