We have stayed in National Parks before, therefore I keep my expectations for the lodges low. Kachina was a nice surprise. I was able to get my reservation by constantly check the website and booking rooms until I was able to get what I wanted. We decided to not go for the canyon view as we can just walk outside to see it (also we are traveling for 7 weeks). Parking is hard as other reviewers have noted, but not impossible- you just need patience. Our room is nice, beds comfortable. It's large enough and well lit, but wish it had a microwave. With the lack of restaurant options microwaves would be really helpful.
We stayed 2 nights at Kachina Lodge on September 19-20 and absolutely loved it! It was my first trip to the Grand Canyon. The lodge is directly on the rim and next door to El Tovar, which was ideal for us. We could watch the sunrise and sunset over the canyon in just a few steps. We booked late, so had to book two different rooms, but were able to check in the second day at about 11:00am!!! Check in at El Tovar was a complete pleasure both days and we hardly ever saw a line of more than one party before us - even at 3:00pm. The people at the desk were all really pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. It was a pleasure dealing with them and I wish we could thank them by name. Many thanks to Xanterra for their excellent advice and help with reservations. The rooms were fine - clean and basic with a western feeling. We got take-out from El Tovar one night and were surprised that our dinner was ready in just 20 minutes. It was so nice to enjoy it while we relaxed in the comfort of our room after a long day hiking. Since there are so few choices for food, we were grateful that we had stocked up on some groceries and wish that there had been a microwave somewhere in the lodge. It takes a while to shuttle to and from the market in the park where there is a microwave available. Also, we had no problem parking and easily found several available spaces right next to the hotel when we arrived at about 1:00pm…
Stayed at Kachina for 2 nights. It's in the heart of everything in the GC Village. Perfect location to roll out of bed and watch the sunrise. Elk came right up to the front of the lodge. Room is simple and clean but your paying for the view and location.
The front desk clerk Sheri was very friendly and helpful. We had a small trailer and Sheri found us a place to park it so we could go to town to eat. She recommended several places to eat. When we went to check out the gentleman and the lady were very kind. We were given water and granola bars for the trip home. The hotel lobby was wonderfully decorated with local art. There were also glass cases with a local artist jewelry. The prices were fantastic and the pieces were beautiful. The room we stayed in was very large, spacious and clean. The towels were a very nice size towel, not skimpy and thin. There is also a Remington Bronze. We will definitely stay here again!
Check in is not until 4 with no possibility of earlier. Plan accordingly. We got there at 9am and hiked until 2 and could not check in. Rooms are outdated, tv is fuzzy, but worth it to be in the canyon at night. Close to food at el Tovar and bright angel lodge.
