Detailed Reviews
We returned home yesterday after spending a week at Hotel Laxnes. We had a great week and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the hotel is on the outskirts of Reykjavik. The room was basic but adequate for a comfy stay. We had a fridge in the room which was very useful. The view from the room was beautiful over snow covered mountains. Breakfast every morning was good, a choice of bread, pastries, cereal and most importantly the waffle maker!
All the staff were very friendly and helpful, from the young lady who cleaned our room every day, supplying us with clean towel to Thomas who welcomed us on our arrival and Tanja on reception who has helped with any queries.
The meal at the hotel on New Years eve was ok, the lamb was very tender but the dessert was a little disappointing/basic and perhaps made us feel the cost of the meal was a little expensive.
We watched the fireworks from around the hotel, Icelanders certainly dont hold back on their fireworks!
We used the number 15 bus into Reykjavik and found the whole process very easy and reasonable. I downloaded the app which meant I could pay for our trips easily via that which meant I didnt have to have the correct change.
We did the golden circle tour and the visit to the blue lagoon, amazing trip, booked through the hotel website. We didn't manage to do the northern lights tour as it was cancelled 3 times due to the poor weather. I would recommend if you want to do this tour do not book it before you go, wait to check the aurora forecast to see if the northern lights are likely to be visible.
We loved our stay and would definately recommend the hotel, it is not a corporate hotel, it is quirky and comfortable.
Thank you to the whole team.

Amazing hotel. Simple as. The rooms were fantastic with the comfiest bed I have ever stayed in in a hotel - it even had feather pillows! Slept like a baby. We had lovely french doors in our room looking out over the mountains, which at the time of our stay were covered in snow so it was so picturesque and breathtaking. All the staff were lovely and happy to have a chat so we didn’t feel rushed or like we couldn’t approach anyone which was lovely. Location I would give a 6* if I could, small, beautiful little town surrounded by mountains with a beach and waterfall not a far walk. Couple of supermarkets and fast food literally on your doorstep so couldn’t ask for more. Bus into town was 470isk and picks up literally outside the hotel and drops you off in the main square in Reykjavík, super easy to use and great for people with anxiety like myself I didn’t feel worried or lost as the buses call the stops too so you know where to get off. Overall I am beyond impressed and would return in a heartbeat.
Also, portion sizes are very large (pictured is a medium fry from KFC that I had already started eating; way bigger than a large in the UK! I would advise getting one meal between two unless super hungry as 2 meals in KFC there cost around £30, but Iceland itself is super expensive so come with plenty of cash to enjoy yourself fully!

We thoroughly enjoyed our three night stay here.
It is a very cosy hotel, with modern rooms and reception area, yet the games room and bar area had a more rustic feeling. The rooms were very light and spacious. The beds were extremely comfortable. Also the showers always had hot water. The tea and coffee facilities were ok but they could do with pots of UHT milk rather than creamer as not many tea drinkers would use creamer.
The staff are extremely friendly. On arrival we had a warm welcome and was given lots of information about the northern lights for that night, things to do in the local area and transport. Throughout our entire stay they were very accommodating and nothing was too much for them. Special thanks to Thomas who manned the bar every night.
We tried the lamb soup on the first night and it went down a treat. The price included a free drink and soup refill which was very reasonable considering food and drink in Iceland can be quite expensive.
Breakfast was thoroughly enjoyable. It was continental style with sweet pastries, toast and cereals, along with cold hams and cheeses. None of our party went hungry after breakfast.
We also rented out the hot tub for the exclusive 2 hour slot. Despite there being a snow storm, the hot tub was a lovely and to a long day of walking and you wouldn't have enough known it was freezing outside. One of our party did miss out on the hot tub unfortunately as it was extremely hot to get into initially (felt like it was scalding) and put her off trying to go in again later when the temperature was brought down a little.
The hotel is a little way out from the main city which we enjoyed as it was very peaceful with lots of walks. However, there is a bus that picks up outside the hotel that goes straight to the city centre which was perfect for a day trip. The hotel is also close to lots of food options and supermarkets. Our favourite had to be the bakery/coffee shop round the corner.
All in all a lovely stay and definitely worth spending a little extra for.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Laxnes, the staff were fantastic, and we were made welcome by the reception staff and bar staff. The Reception is bright and spacious, leading into the premises of the games room and bar area however were Much like stepping from world into another. Much like Aladdin’s cave. Some may say a bit cluttered, some may say a well thought out decorated space. There was a lot of history in this hotel from paintings to old currency from around the the world. I can’t say that taxidermy is my thing but it suited the hotel and its unique style. It was very homey.
We booked a self catering room, which gave us basic facilities to prepare our own meals. This saved us lots of money in eating out which is expensive in Iceland compared to the UK. The room very tidy, and we had a lovely view of the mountains. However we found that it was rather dusty. Unfortunately we wasn’t provided with as much coffee and sugar as we would like, 3 on the first day, and none on the second. We had to go and ask for some more. The staff were okay to give us more.
Lots of variety at breakfast, the standard continental stuff that you would find in most hotels that offer breakfast. I found the orange juice was very watered down though and not to my taste. The waffle machine however was fantastic!
We had traditional soup on the day of arrival, one free refill and some bread, and a drink each. This cost us around £32 (for 2 people) compared to the UK this is quite pricey, but probably what you would expect to pay in Iceland. It was nice.
Overall we enjoyed our stay, and the weather (it was very snowy) sadly we didn’t get to see the northern lights but we Will
Come back for a second chance, and we will stay at laxnes again, thank you for a lovely stay x

Hotel Laxnes
We stayed here for three nights at the end of January 2020. We stayed in Room 22 which was most spacious with a similar sized bathroom with a bath and shower. Furnishings were basic but had all we needed for our stay. Underfloor heating made the room warm and cosy. However, the best bit was the bed which was extremely comfortable. It was two single beds joined together with a king size mattress topper and made for a good nights sleep...
The bar and restaurant part of the hotel was in a separate building which you had to go outside to access. Whilst service was very friendly and courteous, this area appeared to be ‘unusual’ with no one actual theme but lots of odd wall furnishings. Breakfast was basic and served by friendly and helpful staff. It was a self service basis from the breakfast buffet.
In summary, a good location, close to Rekjavik (about 10-15 minutes away) and offered very clean, comfortable and spacious accommodation.
Tip: We stayed in Room 22 which was in a three floor small block whilst some of the rooms had their own front door to the outside area. We were on the ground floor and every time the main front door to this building was opened, you could hear the banging noise of the door shutting. In fairness, this did not happen often but worth mentioning.

Booked a suite, it was very spacious more than enough room for 3 pax (they kindly added an extra bed for us!!!) Room was very clean and well maintained. Staff were all very helpful and prompt in replying emails and even sent us reminders when there's a good forecast for the Northern Lights! Free parking available on site.
One thing to note there isn't toothbrush and toothpaste so you might need to bring your own!

Well out of the way, quaint hotel- as in a £50ish taxi ride from the city centre if you need to use one coming back late from a trip once the buses stop running around 11pm. It’s a 30-40 minute bus journey into the capital.
Breakfast was ok, mainly continental with warm waffles.
The hotel has lots of amenities and the staff are pleasant and helpful.
Then there was the room we were allocated. We weren’t expecting luxury because we were there to see the sights but it was clear on arrival that the staff were nervous and have had complaints about room 21. They plied us with a free beer and some soup and we had four nights in a very small, tired room with two single beds squeezed in. There were no headboards so you were afraid of pulling the curtains down when you moved the pillows and the wardrobe was a shoe rack under four coat hooks. Take care turning over in the bed under the tv because the cables hand down. The view from our window was a KFC and a carpark, disappointing when others had balconies and Mountain Views! We slept fine because our days in Iceland were so busy that once we hit the pillow we were out for the count. Pray you don’t get room 21 because there will be no romance.
There was access to a fridge drawer in the lobby to hold food stuffs and fresh towels every day. You can drink the cold water but the hot water is pungent!
If they had been able to move us to another room at some point in the stay, we would have been satisfied.

Thank you for being positive and making the best of it, no.1; we are glad you had a good holiday - and we are also sorry we had to offer your room 21 (which some guests actully find very cozy and comfortable) but as it was not as you expected we did really try to make it up to you - the mounting view rooms with balcony are the deluxe ones and suits as informed on our website

My Wife and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights at the end of January/beginning of February.
I upgraded our room to a suite with a balcony for 2 nights. It's well worth it as we saw the Northern lights from them! On the third night we were in a room with a fold out balcony which was really cool.
The hotel itself is very quirky and charming. If you're looking for modern and boutique, this isn't the place for you, but if you like rustic, this is the one for you. The rooms are really warm and spacious. The location is amazing, right out of the City, where you really feel you're experiencing proper Iceland. The views are phenomenal. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance and two beautiful walks, one to the beach and the other to a local waterfall. There are bus stops outside of the hotel which take you into central Reykjavik. To be honest, we preferred the hotel area.
We used the hotel hot tub on the first night which was great. Trying to take your clothes off in the freezing snow was an experience! The only downfall was that it was supposed to be private however, three guys came out whilst we were in the hot tub throwing snow at us (they'd had a bit to drink).
Breakfast was included, basic but filled a hole. The staff are extremely helpful there. I emailed several times before we got there and they couldn't have been more helpful.

The view from the window was beautiful! The staff were very friendly and helpful. There’s plenty of food places around and a local bus to take you into the city. We luckily went during a clear and dry weather time so we were very fortunate to see the lights out of the hotel room. Staff member were very helpful at helping us know if they were around or helping you hook tours to go and see them. The mountain is just a beauty to behold especially when you didn’t know it was there. The room was very spacious and the beds were lovely and comfortable.
