Set in pretty unspoilt rain forest, this is a very comfortable lodge run on informal lines. Room was comfortable, all staff exceptionally helpful and friendly. Good food. Short guided walks led by Gerry, who really knows his local birds and bushes, were a delight. It is a beautiful place, well run, and we thought good value for money. True, its...

While many choose to holiday in Australia, we chose to return to South Westland and stayed 3 nights at Lake Moeraki. Set amidst rainforest, mountains and beside the lake, this place kept us busy. Each day we walked, sometimes on a guided walk, but others alone. The 45 minute walk to Munroe's beach is a gentle stroll to a secluded...

Only one night here but it was lovely. The nature walk to feed to eels was interesting. Our guide explained the different types of trees and fern, fed the eels. It is wonderful to have a place that is owned/run by those so ecologically minded. The area seems to so pristine. Our room was large and very comfortable. Staff was...

My husband and I stayed her for 4 nights and we weren't disappointed. We also stayed at their sister lodge in Arthur's Pass. We had a fantastic room with a view of the river. The hospitality was wonderful and the people you meet is a bonus. We were given a tour to the eels that we could actually touch as...

I find it very difficult to find the words for this magical place! We love lodges but I've never had one that is so "hands on" and PASSIONATE about what the lodge and nature has to offer!!! In addition, you find out that often your guide (by foot) to wherever the adventure is heading, is the owner of 27 years!!...

Dear Cyndy, Thanks so much for your review, it really brightened up our day. We are just as passionate about sharing our special corner of wild New Zealand now, as when we started the Wilderness Lodge in 1989. Kind Wishes, Anne Saunders and Gerry McSweeney

The lodge is so welcoming and nice. We had perfect weather, so we were able to many of the activities. I went on the hike to see seals, and that was great. Gerry took us all out one night to show us glow worms and star gazing. It was wonderful. The eel feeding was fun too. Enjoyed the kayaking on...

Dear 729travel, Thanks for your review. Great that you enjoyed participating in so many of the activities during your time with us. Apologies about the sandflies, they can be pesky. Like you say, bug spray can make a good addition to your backpack, especially when hiking the beach on a muggy day. Kind wishes, Anne Saunders and Dr Gerry McSweeney...

We recently had our second visit in 12 months at this fabulous wilderness lodge and would love to make it an annual visit. We stayed in a River View room which was extremely comfortable and spacious, with tasteful decor, luxury toiletries and best of all a fabulous view out over the lake. Anne and Gerry were warm and engaging hosts....

The closed gate at the entrance seemed odd, but made perfect sense once we got in. The Wilderness Lodge is just that - a diamond place to stay on acres and acres of land. It has it's own power generator, but you would never know it. Several buildings form the property literally in the wild tropical area, about a kilometer...

It's difficult to determine the best part of Wilderness Lodge: the staff, location, activities, rooms or food. The owners Gerry and Anne provided the impetus to save the incredible Rimu forest and have owned the lodge for 27 years. They are an institution. They've chosen a fantastic staff to serve the guests with great hospitality. Kelly was wonderful as were...

If you want to see New Zealand in its true native beauty then this is the place to stay. A wonderful lodge set amidst beautiful natural forest beside a river and lake, with majestic mountains all around. Staff are great and Gerry's ( the owner) guided walks are informative and enjoyable. Definitely stay more than just a night to experience...
