Great traditional local food served with a banana leaf, a smile ....and great value.
Not too touristy ( had to ask for a spoon as everyone else had the skill to roll the rice to pick up the curry).
8-10 small taster dishes ..chose veggie and flavours good

We have today stopped off at the inn for some lunch. Everyone was friendly and the food was prepared fresh. The service was excellent and the beer cold!!!
The coffee house offers a wide range including Indian,Chinese and continental food. It is situated close to the palace too.

When we visited Kanadukathan, we were told owners of Chettinad palace are not allowing visitors due to crowd, not even in the outhouse. Disappointed, we explored the area and saw this property just behind the palace and thought of coffee break. We inquired about the mansions and after a good courteous dialog, owner offered to give a tour of his own mansion. He even called up a retired post master to give a tour in English as we don't know Tamil. This is pure hospitality that we have been famous for in the past!
We finished tour of his mansion and others and thought of having lunch in his hotel as a token of appreciation. It was worth the wait as we went early. Mouth watering food with humble and polite people who wants to make you eat more. And suprise, surprise - while we were having the tour of his mansion, he actually arranged a tour to the outhouse of the Chettinad palace or whatever it is called. There were two families having lunch and after a good, filling lunch, we are treated with a tour of the outhouse which is mansion in itself.
Thank you sir - You made our trip Kanadukathan a memorable one. I know you had to leave for Tirupati and were getting late so didn't stop you but a photograph with you would have been a trophy to be cherished.

I was in pudukottai for a Christian Conference and thought to use the spare time to visit the chettinadu heritage area mainly to taste some Authetic Chettinadu cusine. It was only a 30 km drive through average roads. We had stayed in Hotel Marris which was a reasonalby decent hotel which charged 1800rs for an AC doulbe room. It was on the main road next to the head post office. When we went to Kanadukathan the main Rajah Anamaliar palace which belongs to the owners of the Anamalai university was closed to visitors. It was a real dissapointment because it looked really grand and the only well maintained architectural property in the whole area. I would recommend foreigners who would like to see this brillinat master piece to get permission from the Vice chancellors office of the anamalai university in Chennai to get into this property. It would really be a treat. Well anyways coming to the Food part, I started asking around and they said that the Narayana cafe serves authentic chettinadu food at a reasonable price. So I thought about giving it a try. It was a modern facility with authentic local staff. The head waiter was quite extraoridinarily hospitable. We opted for a non veg chettinadu meal which was 200 rs per serving. We were served a basic tamilnadu banana leaf meal with 4 authentic chettinadu veg accompaniments , rice and chettinadu chicken curry. Being a food enthusiast, I expected a little more. I would recommend this place of any ordinary chettinadu experience. For genuine food enthusiast, I would recommend that you first go through the menu, ask if they have authentic chettinadu oriented local staff, then order your food. I would also recommend that you check out places like the Chettinadu Mansion before filling your stomach with ordinary food. Anyways I give 5 stars for the hospitality of narayana cafe. The room tarrif's were mind boggling. 5000 INR for a single room, when you can find reasonably good rooms some 30km away for 2000INR. But if you want spa and the extra fitting's and accessories and you are cash strapped, then one of these renovated places is your best bet. There is a well maintained chettinadu property called PREIYAVEEDU some 3 km away which is worth seeing. The place called Kanadukathan, seems like a once upon a time great civilization. Shames that the government has ignored to maintain such a rich heritage which will crumble away soon unless its in the hands of rich owners like the Annamalai university....have fun and good food

We had dropped in and enjoyed excellent service and great food when we had stayed in kanadukathan, The Chettinad lunch that they serve is excellent both in its veg and non veg version. its good value for money, The authentic chettinad dishes that they served us did leave a very pleasant memory The restaurant is spacious with good ambiance and with cool interiors even if the AC was not switched on. (outside it was 39 Deg when we were there ) the exterior had some day to day artifacts of Chettinad for display.

Me and my family, including an infant child, stayed for a night at this place during May 2013. The best part of the Hotel are the people who take care of you - you cannot expect Waiters in Tuxedos and Bellboys with huge moustaches here with their wooden greetings! But what you find is warm, earthly and humble South Indian hospitality at its best. They go out of their way to make you comfortable, and the owner actually is the best part of this hotel. Again, warm, friendly and very personal attention. I would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel for your stay at Kanaadu Kaathaan.
