Planned to sleep in Plett, but was told at the pub in Nature's Valley to try this out. So glad we did! Lovely garden and energy, though staff seemed a bit tired. As can be expected after New Year's... First camping experience for one of our friends who vowed she'd never camp. Think the double bed in the tent is...

Hi Lizel- Thanks for your understanding! By the time you visited we had been on the run for quite a while, and yes, things were not always as shipshape as we'd like. Unfortunately we too are only human......

We found Rocky Road Back Packers in the Coast to Coast booklet by happy accident. Thankfully they were able to accommodate 4 weary travellers in the middle of the busiest season, and arriving at the lodge after a somewhat difficult start to our road trip really felt like coming home. From the beautiful forest garden, to the clean and neat...

Thanks for the kind words! We are glad that so many guests feel at home here. This is really what we're all about. And why so many of our guests are "word of mouth" referrals.

We stayed here for two nights with some friends in the luxury tents. It's a beautiful place to stay and has a lovely garden. The bathrooms are clean but especially the bush bathroom is really beautiful. Another great thing is the pool/jacuzzi. I would recommend to stay here if you're looking for something different in a beautiful environment.

We loved the idea of having a comfortable safari tent without pitching it ourselves! Set in a beautifully maintained, green grassed country property, off the main road, with views and lush forests it is heaven. The outdoor shower offers privacy but views to the mountain, bliss! The owners and Leon made us feel so welcome. Self-catering in the spacious kitchen...

Thanks for the compliments. I like what you say about friendliness - interesting that its something you can't pretend...... Just saying 'have a nice day', and really meaning it are 2 different things!

There is no need to repeat everything said in favor of this place itself (cleanliness, type of accomodation and so on) in the previous reviews- simply because every single part is true! But to emphasize two other important points: People- The crowd it generally attracts and the staff themselves are awesome. No matter whether you like to have a few...

Thank you for your kind words! Interesting what you said about the staff - I think the secret is that we all genuinely enjoy the generally wonderful folk who come to stay with us here. Our guests become our friends - not just a way of making money....

We just stayed for one night in that hostel, so we cannot say anything about the cooking and the social life that was so good rated in the reviews before. We stayed in a double room outside of the main building with shared bathroom. The room had high humidity and did not seem clean. The bed sheets were dirty. A...

Thank you for your honesty! Lets first address the water issue. The brown colouration in the water is from tannins in the vegetation through which rainwater moves into rivers and dams. All the natural water on the Garden Route is that colour. Although it doesn't look nice, it is actually a lot healthier to drink than tap water in the...

Thank you, Sarah! Yes, one of the good things here are social evenings around the fire in the lounge, while tempting smells waft through from the kitchen. After a day hiking in the bracing air of Nature's Valley, horseriding, skydiving or enjoying the surf at nearby Plettenberg Bay - or just lazing in our picturesque, huge garden, Mac's cooking goes...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Rocky Road Backpackers in The Crags, about 18 kms to the east of Plettenberg Bay, is on a secure rural small holding set adjacent to indigenous forest and surrounded by open green pastures with wonderful views of the Tsistsikamma Mountain foothills. Our tranquil, laidback base is the perfect place in which to relax and enjoy nature far from the rush of normal day to day living. The well maintained large gardens have many shaded ‘chill spots’ where one can unwind with a book or the company of others while the plunge pool is a great spot to take off the heat on those hot daysIt’s also a great spot from which to explore and experience the many attractions that the Plettenberg Bay region has to offer. We are close to the world’s highest Bungy, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, The Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre and unspoilt Natures Valley. We’re well positioned for marine boat safari’s, game reserves and a vast network of scenic hiking trails covering forest, mountain and coastline.Rocky Road Backpackers is conveniently located a mere 2 kms from the N2 and is listed in the current editions of Coast to Coast, The Alternative Route and is also an accredited Baz Bus stop. Our accommodation is the standard mix of dorms, twins and doubles in the main farm house, bungalows and fully equipped luxury safari tents while those preferring to provide their own tents are free to do so.. Our entertainment areas come alive after working hours with an enclosed veranda/bar area with two fireplaces, the outside fireball for fireside chats and when the plunge pool is swung over to the hot tub on Friday nights. Rocky Road has a well established reputation for its quality farm style breakfasts and evening meals – roasts, casseroles, stews and, of course, the end-of-week braai’s. It goes without saying that the social happenings also add to the memories, which is why many people have returned to continue their experience of Rocky Road. ... more   less
