I went on a family holiday looking for peace and quiet. This was a home stay which I thought was as enjoyable as a summer vacation at your grandparent’s! Cool climate like Bangalore( it’s about the same height), but with forests on all sides. You can run about see the local sites and beauty spots, or just unwind, enjoy the dogs and the bird song and watch the light summer clouds and the gentle breeze Mrs Bhandari is like everyone’s ideal grandmother. Putting you at ease making your favourite dishes and fishing out old fashioned jams and pickles . But the best part is sitting out in the garden with her in the twilight as the evening cools, and enjoying her local and family stories. She makes every guest feel like a member of her family. Me and my daughter had a lovely stay at the Darang Tea Estate. We were there for 6 days. Beautiful property. The cottages are cosy, spacious, with tasteful decor. There was tons to explore within a short drive. But the highlight of our trip was our gracious host Neeru aunty and her delectable homemade food. It truly felt like we were visiting family!

Every April I do a google search for homestays in the north of the country and I've found utterly delightful boutique homestays in Bhimtal, Mukteshwar and Tirthan Valley - but this year I picked a winner! The Darang Tea estate is a lovely property where time moves slowly, graciously and gives you the space to catch up with your thoughts. Mrs Neera Bhandari's 150 year old home in the 70 odd acres of her tea estate takes you back to a bygone colonial era. Situated around 45 min from Dharamshala, the estate has 3 cottages apart from the main home and each cottage has its own unique character. We stayed at the upper cottage, which has a lovely verandah where could read our books with the three estate dogs at our feet. The cottages are old ( the Pecan cottage apparently used to be a henhouse at one time!) with the charm of stone floors and old bookshelves (if you want marble and granite bathrooms you'll be in for a disappointment!) - but spotlessly clean and every comfort is taken care of. This is a place for relaxation - a break from our busy city lives. There are plenty of walks in and around the estate ( with the doggies to point out the way!), delightful little bookshelves in almost every room and as for the food.... but more on that later! Neeraji is a wonderful hostess. Her warm hospitality made us feel we were long awaited family guests and not strangers. Over delicious meals we heard stories about her redoubtable mother in law, who had inherited the estate from her father and who was the first woman sarpanch in the state. We also found a six degree connection to our surprise and delight - between a relative of hers and my grandfather. She even took us for a drive to the top of a nearby pine covered hill with a glorious view. The 3 estate dogs were our constant companions - super friendly Casper, Diana and the 13 year old Pug, Brandy. The entire staff is super helpful. Now for the food - which deserves its own paragraph. Almost everything is home grown and home made - including the vast variety of jams, pickles, sauces and juices. Neeraji makes her own butter from the milk of the estate cows. The vegetables are mostly grown in their garden. My husband is a vegetarian and I'm a vegan - and we ate more at every meal than we ever eat at home! Every meal was a feast - with a range of dishes like raw jackfruit sabji, sarson ka saag, soya kheema mattur, mushroom curry, dahi baingan, kadhi pakoda, maa ki daal which were all light on oil and cream and just delicious. We loved our stay at Darang and will cherish the memories of Neeraji's warm hospitality, the charming cottage where we stayed, the walks in the village near the estate, the super friendly doggies and of course the gorgeous meals! We hope to visit again in a year or two

We visited the Darang Tea Estate in March 2022 and stayed at the Upper Cottage. The lush green tea estate with views of the snow capped mountains, easy walks and stream within the estate is a heaven by itself. We enjoyed delicious home cooked meals, accompanied with jams, pickles, butter and curd all produced at the estate. The hospitality of Mrs.Bhandari is par excellence. She runs a place which is a home away from home. Her care and affection towards the guests and delightful conversations are an added bonus. Darang Tea Estate is easily accessible by road, train or flight and is a great place to stay and explore the nearby towns of Palampur, Dharamshala, Mcleodganj, Andrea, Bir and Billing, the Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Arts and Culture, the Kangra Fort and Museum and the historical Baijnath Temple. We highly recommend a visit to the Darang Tea Estate. Vikram and Arti

Ok this review was long pending. I visited darang tea estate in 2019 with my cousin. We have the best experience staying there. People there made us feel welcome immediately. It was such a warm and homely welcome. The food is from heart. Nothing show-offy about it. Just pure from the heart to your plate good rich food served with lot of love. The cottages were super comfortable and warm throughout the stay. We did not get to meet neeru and her husband but she made sure we were taken well care of. Thank you so much for a lovely experience. Can't wait to come back ❤️

Rustic charm of beautifully maintained 150 yrs old cottages, incredibly delicious home cooked food( mostly organic), four legged guides ( Jasper and Diana , two friendly labradors), hypnotic stories by the host that transport you to a bygone era and expansive view of 70 acres tea estate - Darang tea estate can easily get a place in your bucket list if you love immersive travel! Mrs. Bhandari is a super host. Entire place has a calming effect that helps you heal. This property is not available on OTAs or on airbnb. According to Mrs Bhandari, that’s how she ensures she gets a guest who values experience over luxury -“ if you have taken pain to discover this place and read all the review before calling me, it means you are looking for something unique and ready to experiment”! Next time you visit dharamshala / palampur , try this place. A two bedroom cottage ( + a living room with a fireplace) inclusive of breakfast would cost you around 9k/night, Lunch/ dinner approx 600 per meal ( worth every single penny)!

These are cottages in the midst of a Tea Estate wonderfully managed by its owner Mrs. Neeru Bhandari. I must say that the place is brilliantly located giving a close glimpse of the Dhauladhar Range..There are lot of interesting places nearby approachable by road and Mrs.Bhandari recommends the best to go around and enjoy.. Since am interested in bird watching and photography, I must say that this place is home to quite a few interesting birds and the ones I encountered were tree creeper, Ruby throat, cinereous and green backed tits, barbets, grey headed Woodpecker, slaty blue flycathcher, grey bushchat to name a few.. Coming back to the place Mrs.Bhandari ensures that you are at home with great sumptuous home made food, lovely interactions be it with the adults or kids and overall making the whole experience a memory to cherish with..I thank Mrs.Bhandari and her team of workers for the lovely time that we had at the Darang Estate and wish them the very best in their future endeavors..hope to revist this place sooner than later..

Darang Tea Estate is a boutique home stay run by Neeru Bhandari. We spent 4 nights there and loved every moment. Set in 70 acres of Tea Garden and only 2 cottages; makes it a perfect getaway. The cottages are very well done, spacious, and comfortable. The whole place is love at first sight and has its own charm !! the cottages, tea garden, small treks in and around the property and three furry friends Diana, Casper and Brandy (disciplined & friendly)! Food is the highlight here and auntie’s personal involvement in cooking makes all the difference. Such scrumptious meals, and each time you would be served different variety, different flavors, all organic. There was so much personal touch to everything. Our 8-year-old daughter loved the place and didn’t want to leave. Auntie’s warmth and hospitality add a dimension to make it a great homestay. She put every effort to make our holidays memorable. Things to do: lovely conversations around the fire, nature walks, paragliding, Kangra fort.

Darang Tea estate is a beautiful place to stay. We enjoyed the greenery, serenity and calmness along with the beautiful view of dhauladhar range. Do Checkout out the bench in the middle of the tea estate, it gives you the most stunning view of snow capped peaks, its truly mesmerizing. Home cooked food is lovely too. And to top it all, Neeru Aunty is a great host. We loved our stay at Darang!
