Taipei hotels often claim a five-start rating when, quite frankly, they are not deserved. However the Landis, from its Art Deco exterior to the luxurious rooms, truly deserves its claim to be one of Taipei's top hotels. Rooms come equipped with i-Pads, flat screen TVs and tea and coffee making facilities. The Landis also has several top-ranking restaurants, including the Tien Hsiang Lo, serving Hangzhou cuisine, and the French-style Brasserie. The Landis has a 24-hour business centre. The Landis can rightly claim to set the highest standards in luxury.

For our 40th wedding anniversary my wife and I enjoyed an 18 day Asian smorgasbord tour from 28 December 2019 to 14 January 2020 visiting in order Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Laos and Singapore. Our 6 night private tour of Taiwan was arranged through Wendy Wu Tours and we had our first and sixth nights staying at the Landis Hotel in Taipei with overnight visits also to Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake, Tainan and Kaohsiung. We enjoyed our two overnight stays at the Landis Hotel. In fact we fell in love with the place as soon as we received a friendly greeting from the Concierge and entered the reception lobby. The Landis has embraced an excellent booking-in process. The reception staff were seated at black topped desks waiting to serve us and we were invited to complete our check in process with them in comfortable chairs rather than standing and leaning over a very unfriendly counter like at many hotels. Now that is what I call civilised and sophisticated. To the front of the two reception desks was an interesting artistic display utilising several empty wine bottles. This was creative, imaginative and really caught the eye. In the lobby to the side of the main entrance and near a rather ornate staircase sits a grand piano and at various times when visiting the lobby we were greeted with a pianist playing lovely soft background music – nothing like a bit of old style charm. The hotel has a grand French Art Deco appearance and while not to everyone’s taste it certainly appealed to us. We found the guest rooms were spacious with a comfortable bed and lots of desk space and easy access to the refrigerator and a well organised tea and coffee making area. The bathroom was a good size and had adequate facilities. There was a separate shower unit and plunge bath and the toilet had electronic controls. Excellent views of the city skyline could be enjoyed from the guest room window. A lovely feature in the guest room was the colourful glass panelling separating the bedroom from the bathroom. A considerate touch was a traveller’s kit on the writing desk providing, in addition to the standard writing paper, envelopes and a pen, such needy things as sticky tape, paper clips, a small measuring ruler, and an eraser. Another nice gesture was a complimentary apple and banana for us to eat on a plate complete with cutlery and napkin. We enjoyed our buffet breakfasts in the Brasserie Restaurant on both mornings. There was a good array of food items on offer. The décor at the restaurant is very impressive with brightly polished brass railings, Burgundy red seats and cast iron decorations. This offered a really pleasing atmosphere. We managed dinner experiences at two of the hotel’s three restaurants on our two overnight visits. On our first night we tried the Brasserie which becomes a French Restaurant by night. Whilst we found the food was of a good standard we felt the service was lacking on the night we were there which was disappointing. On the other hand on our second night, we experienced an amazing, memorable dining experience at the Tien Hsiang Lo Restaurant - the food and service at this Michelin Star establishment were outstanding. An endearing feature of the hotel is its friendly and helpful staff. When we asked for assistance with shopping or touring or some aspect of the facilities at the hotel the staff were only too willing to help us out by offering clear concise answers to our questions. They engaged in good conversation and they made us feel special. This is an important consideration when dealing with hotel guests as the good reputation of any hotel is very much governed by the good attitude of its hotel staff. The Landis is suitably located in the Zhongshan District of Taipei which offers travellers a wide range of food outlets, restaurants and interesting shopping. We found it a nice pastime traversing the streets in the vicinity of the hotel at night. We are so pleased that Wendy Wu Tours chose the Landis Hotel for our two stays in Taipei. It was a pleasure staying in such a classy hotel with such traditional old style charm.
