Forest Hills Farm & Guesthouse is a family run rustic theme resort tucked in a secluded part of the Nilgiris in south India. With Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and Bandipur Tiger Reserve a hop away, this region offers opportunities to explore the un-spoilt forests and visit the resident wildlife. Time takes a break here in the deep reaches of nature. Accommodation includes double-occupancy rooms, a family cottage, deluxe rooms, bamboo huts, two tree houses and a Machaan, all non-a/c. The rooms are cozily furnished with modern conveniences. The cuisine is delightfully tasty homemade food. It is a charming mix of old-fashioned hospitality and contemporary amenities typical of colonial bungalows. The 'Machaan' or Watchtower, built on stilts at the edge of the property, has Wild Dogs, Asiatic Elephants, Leopards, Gaur, Sloth Bear as visitors. Set in a breathtakingly beautiful valley with the wooded mountains forming a majestic backdrop, the dawn and dusk here is adorned with over a hundred species of birds. Herds of spotted deer are commonly seen grazing in and around the place. True to its name, Forest Hills gives you a combined experience of both the forest and the Nilgiris (blue mountains). Step out of the city and immerse in the sounds and visuals offered by nature.

Best place to stay for bachelors. Adventurous and relaxing stay.
I had been here twice and will visit again with friends.

Machaan is the best place to stay. You can stay on the open top at night and watch for the wildlife sneaking in. We saw sloth Bear and ofcourse deer/rabbits/wild boars. We missed elephants.
Tree house is the second best.

Both these rooms are around 300 metres away from the reception area and walking after dusk will be thrilling and seemed risky. Thats why we loved it and thus not advisable for family with kids. For kids better pick rooms closer to reception.

Arrived at Forest Hill after travelling by train and car from Chennai, very tired and rather car sick. We were welcomed with open arms and smiles - we were the only 3 staying for the night. A safari was organised immediately with a very enthusiastic driver George who went out of his way to locate animals for us. Food great and rooms comfortable and outlook superb. Highly recommended.

We just left Forest Hills this morning and wish we could go back there. We had a wonderful stay, made so by the lovely owner, Savita and her son Sameer. We were greeted at the gate on arrival as though we were old friends returning. Right away they were making suggestions for things for us to do to make the most of our time there. They made arrangements for us to go on a Safari with the jeep driver, George, who is very knowledgable of the area and made great efforts to find where the elephants were so we could see them in the wild.
The entire staff we very welcoming and accomodating, even bringing tea to us in the watch tower. What a truly enchanting place. We had only planned to stay one night, but ended up staying two and would have stayed longer if time allowed. All meals are included in the price and Savita and her staff go above and beyond to make meal time a gastronomic experience with lovely home made food. Everyone eats together as a family at one big table. This whole experience was wonderful and a great way to end our visit to India.

The resort is located near to bokkapuram temple. There are plenty of resorts near to that temple, but Forest hills wins the race by ease.I stayed in macchan for single cost which costs around 7000.Its not too far from reception. But it is advised not to roam after dusk. Our driver heard sounds of elephant on that night.Manager Radhakrishnan was good.He arranged as Jeep safari to moyar, mudhumalai and singara in evwning for 1200 and morning jeep safari to moyar and bandhipur for 1500.I would request ppl to take safaris from resort rather then taking seperately as it costs more. And try safaris at bandhipur rather than mudhumalai.Food was fantastic especially Non-Veg.Surely visit again for the food :).Toilet was neat and heater was working properly.Only two issues i faced-As i stayed in macchan i couldnt walk freely at nightas it made some sounds, which will disturb the other person sleeping. The next one is i planned for only one night and i wanted a safari in bandhipur for 2.30 hours which is conducted by jungle lodges, but he didnt mentioned the time of sfaris early and i missed it :(. But surely i will b visiting this resort in coming months and fulfill the things i missed :)

We called Nilgiri guest house based on the Lonely Planet review. We talked to the owner who proposed a standard double room at 1,200 rupees per night or a bamboo hut at 1,750 per night. We booked two nights and asked how to reach the resort from Ooty. The owner replied that it was possible to reach it by taxi at 800 Rs or by bus, so we took the bus.

The bus did not actually leave us near the guesthouse but at a junction between Masinagudi and Bokkapuram. It was getting dark and there were 5-7 km to walk in the jungle to get to Bokkapuram, luckily we found a jeep on the road that brought us to Forest hills for 100 Rs.

In Bokkapuram there are only resorts, it's in the middle of the jungle, and you can only get from one to another by 4wd. When the owner saw that it had got dark, it had started raining and the jeep was gone - so we were basically stuck there - he gave us the pricelist and said that the standard room was 1,700 Rs and the bamboo hut 1,850, handing us the pricelist.

I asked whether i had talked to him on the phone the day before and the owner admitted it. I pointed out that these weren't the prices he told me over the phone but he denied having given us those prices.

The rooms are just average or below for India - we've been sleeping in much better rooms, with air conditioned in lovely colonial houses for 1,000 to 1,500 Rs almost anywhere, while forest hills rooms don't have air conditioning. Since you cannot move without a car Forest Hills charges exorbitant rates for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well: e.g. 250 Rs per person for a buffet Indian dinner, which would be worth 150 Rs at any roof terrace in Madurai or Mysore.

We decided to stay at least one night and book a trekking and a park tour for the following day. The owner told us that the trekking would start the next morning at 7.00 AM because that was the best time to see animals. However, we showed up at 6.45 AM in the lobby and there was no guide, and the owner couldn't be found. Half an hour later an employee told us that the guide had left at 6.30 AM without us. We complained that it was them who told us that the tour started at 7.00, and that anyway the guide could have been instructed on how many participants were enlisted and find out. The owner apologised and said he could find another guide for 9.00 AM. We reminded him that he told us that the best time was 7.00 AM or late in the afternoon, he tried to reply telling us that "he knew a better guy who knew better routes".

We declined the offer and settled the account.

There are many better places in Masinagudi and we would absolutely not recommend anyone to stay at a place whose owner denies the very prices he tells on the phone and is incapable of organising a trek for two persons.

I visited this place with my adult son and wife in April 2015 and was lucky to be upgraded to the "Machan" - the tallest accomodation in this delightful accomodation right at the core area and at the foothill of the mountains. The choicest accommodation is obviously this 2 storied tree house with a viewing gallery complete with a wooden recliner at the viewing roof top. The biggest adavantage of this place is that it is closest to the reserve area of the forest. If you are lucky you could see the tuskers drinking from the watering hole that is barely 200' away from the tree houses. We were content to see the endless swarms of deer and a few wild boars during our one night stay. I was awakened at about 2:30 am in the morning by the muted trumpet call of elephants. Visibility being zero after 1' (you shouldn't switch on the lights when the animals are nearby so that you don't disturb them) I only listened to the sounds of bamboos being wrenched by the elephants. It was eerie and yet magical.

This is a place where you can truly feel overwhelmed by the warm services of the staff. You can almost ask for any specific food and chances are that the eager staff will definitely fulfil your craving. You can literally gorge yourself on food. The friendly hosts - a very friendly family - are so very knowledgeable and helpful yet so unobtrusive - make your stay that extra bit warm.
It gets cold at night - even in April. So a jacket and a half sleeve sweater are a must. We spent only one night on this roadtrip on way from Bangalore to Ooty but will surely stay for at least 2 more nights the next time. We couldn't do the morning safari this time but will definitely do that in the next trip.
One of the amusing ssights we saw were monkeys who invaded a parked car whose windows were unmindfully kept open. The monkeys pilfered the potato chips, fruit juice and other knick knacks from the car and then perched themselves on the car roof and bonnet while everyone including the car owners, watching on in amazement!

By Far the Worst managed Place I have ever seen and had to stay at.Torn sheets, towel racks falling off in the bathroom, hot water does not last for more than 5 mins. You might be better of camping at one of the nearby resorts than stay at this run down place. Have to admit that some of the staff working there were very courteous but management needs to get their act together, very sly folks.
If anyone decides to stay here anyway make sure you have something in writing about the prices for the rooms and any other incidental charges....if not you could be in for a Big surprise at checkout.

We were 3 families staying in this property during Novemeber 2014. The best thing about this hotel is that its location is right next to the the Mudumalai buffer zone and mountains are facing the resort. We had taken a Machan room which has a special open room above it to view the scenery around the hotel. There are also treehouses designed around a tree. Overall a nice forest staying experience. The food was good and simple also served hot. A good location for bird watching. There is also a small stream bordering the resort for a good silent walk. The resort also organizes trips to Mudumalai Sanctuary and ton the nearby elephant feeding centre. You can also take your vehicle there.

Spent a beautiful weekend at Forest Hills in the first week of November. Infact, this was our second stay in this resort and was as perfect as our first visit. Initially, I thought I will try one of the other resorts which was very highly rated in the vicinity, but one look was enough to convince me to go straight to Forest hills.
The only thing which we missed this time is the dinner being served outdoors. Though we had the flexibility of carrying our individual dinner to the bonfire, still I could not help but miss the dinner which we had during our first visit...the buffet served outside next to the bonfire...it is truly a special memory...Nevertheless, the indoor dining area is very good too...
The whole resort is very well maintained. Very helpful and courteous staff and manager. In fact the owners try to make your visit as pleasant as possible. What can I say about the location? picture perfect..greenery all around and the only sounds were those of the jungle birds. There is a small stream just outside the property and we spent sometime playing in the water. Perfectly safe for kids. We were a group of 4 adults and two 5 yr old kids and stayed in the Tusker hut. We would definitely recommend this place to other families as well. I am sure that once tried, you would not want to stay in any other resort in Masinagudi.
Look forward to another visit to this beautiful resort and hopefully a longer one this time :-)

The only glitch was that the geyser did not work due to some electrical problem at the time of our stay but the staff was kind enough to provide buckets of hot water.
