We had the most incredible stay at this place. The homestay is basic but the hosts are very warm , hospitable and accommodating. The place is super clean, the food is absolutely yum and the homestay is surrounded by greenery
There is a climb to reach the homestay
We look forward to going back and spending some more time there

Definitely love this place; so nice and hospitable. The hosts really cared for our comfort and helped us have a nice time. The surrounding areas are also to die for. This is truly a gem in Darap, and we highly recommend everyone visiting Sikkim to stay at this place.

Dara Gaon Village Retreat is beautifully located. The hosts, Shiva & Radha and their children Nesang and Prabal made the stay truly memorable. Even their dog, Tintin was so friendly.

The rooms were as comfortable as you can get in a home stay. Hot water was available round the clock. The home-made food was superb.

Would surely like to visit again.

Radha is an excellent host. She makes you feel at home and involves you in interesting things such as making momos or preparing the local millet-based drink (tongba).

If you are a morning person, do walk up to the limbo village (about 800 metres uphill) to see the Kanchendzonga at sunrise.

Pelling is about 5 kms away from Darap. Most places of interest (other than Khecheoperi Lake) are within walking distance from Pelling town... takes about 6-7 hours to cover all of them. It is easy to get shared jeeps from Darap to Pelling (about 20 INR) though the walk to Pelling from Darap is beautiful.

I can only assume that those who didn't love this place stayed in the goat shed next door, because Dara Gaon Village Retreat is a charming, authentic and comfortable place to live in the misty valleys of Sikkim.

After an awful time in the graceless Newa Regency in Pelling, we moved to this homestay where we were very happy for five nights. Taking a night off from the slovenly service in our Pelling nightmare, we walked to Kechoperi Lake, and slept in a basic, clean room provided by a local family. On the way back to Pelling, we hitched a lift in the back of a truck full of local tribes people, which stopped at Darap, from where we were driven by Mr Sushil Tamang of the Cherry Village Resort, back to our crumby hotel.

Sushil listened to our tale of woe and suggested we move to a homestay. We hadn't realised there were any in the area, so jumped at the chance. He arranged it all for us and we ended up at Dara Goan Retreat.

Yes, it is a steep and rocky path to and through the buildings of Shiva's family home, but THIS IS THE HIMALAYAS! It is mountainous! If you want easy access stay in a faceless hotel. If you want the authentic experience of a Nepali home then stay here, or at any of the other countless homestays springing up in Sikkim.

The price was full board, but when we ate elsewhere the money spent in the other house was contra-ed against our bill.

We were given wonderful home-cooked breakfasts, lunches and dinners, with tea/coffee available at any time. The service was charming and on time. Some guests forget that homestays are not hotels: they do not have a full complement of chefs in a 24 hour kitchen. It is often only the wife who cooks, and as guests we must respect that she has other chores during the day. You take your meals at the same time as the family, so should be prepared to compromise to a certain extent. Initially we were fed at 8:30pm, but when we said we would prefer to eat earlier the family was delighted -- they had been serving food late because that is what other domestic Indian tourists had preferred.

We had a list of activities offered to us, many of which we took up, but some of which we simply didn't have time to enjoy. We spent a day on the village walk with Purna, which we would recommend to everyone: we tried the local moonshine, local tea, local food and a strange tea brewed by Purna's Mum, a Limboo lady living in their 200 year old mud-floored family home. We didn't manage any fishing, but if we go back we intend to spend a day at the river.

Please go to Sikkim and please stay here. For further information contact Sushil, who will find you a homestay here, or elsewhere in Darap, he's on 09733235441.

We have had amazing time in Sikkim & darjeeling. Amazing people & service. The only blot was Mr. SHIVA GURUNG of Dara Gaon Village retreat. He duped us for money. We had asked him 5-6 times whether or not his place was good for middle aged/old people as well. He assured us about the service and place. However once we reached there it was just too too horrible. The approach was really bad. the pathway to his retreat was really a challenge for just about everyone. Add to that the fact that his service was really pathetic to say the least. Ask for anything and it would be made available after ages.
Avoid this place. If at all you wish to travel to Darap village, live in the cherry village retreat which is up the road. Better stay in the hotels in actual Pelling city.
Dara Gaon Village retreat : NOT AT ALL RECOMMENDED FOR FAMILY

This is a fantastic homestay in Darap, 8km from Pelling. The Nepali family is Dad, Shiva, Mum, Radha, and two young children Neesang and Prabal.

The family are extremely welcoming and caring. Shiva showed us around the village and was great at giving us recommendations of where to visit and how to get there. Whenever we were out and about, we always knew Shiva was only a phone call away if we needed any help. Radha cooked fantastic food every day and made sure we were well looked after at the homestay – we were even served ‘bed tea’ every morning, which was a real treat.

The rooms are basic but very comfortable and provided everything we needed including an en suite bathroom with (cold water) shower. The electricity all over Sikkim is pretty patchy and it is no exception here – but torches and candles did the trick!

The property is incredibly well maintained and full of character complete with stone paths, Buddha prayer flags, a pond and grassy lawn. The view from the rooms’ balconies is stunning – you can see right across the valley to the hills the other side – we spent many an hour reading and enjoying the peace and quiet.

Darap is a lovely unspoilt village, and a way way nicer place to stay than Pelling itself. It’s still easy enough to catch share jeeps to Pelling, Yuksom and other places of interest, and makes for a great base to explore some of West Sikkim.

Shiva and Radha provide a great value homestay and an amazing cultural experience putting you right in the heart of local life in Sikkim. It took quite a lot of digging around the internet to find anything about it, so here are the details to save you the trouble:

This homestay was the end point and crowning glory my trek in West Sikkim. The owners Shiva and Radha Gurung are ever so warm and hospitable, and their children totally adorable. All of them are extremely attentive towards the needs of the guests while going about their own activities;it feels like one, big happy family!
The property is really pretty and the fowl, fish, cat and dogs keep everyone entertained. The flowers are amazing and so is the furniture made out of wood and bamboo. Radha is a cook par excellence and little sister Asha pitches in in quiet but significant ways. The cottages do need a bit of sprucing up with the plumbing. Electricity being an issue sometimes, water heating and gadget charging can be tedious but easily overlooked in the fabulous experience this place offers.
The village walk is not to be missed while staying here, and an extended stay with or without kids would be thoroughly enjoyable..........

Darap home stay managed by Mr Shiva Gurung and his wife Radha was a heavenly place in peaceful village of Darap. We stayed there for two days and enjoyed the hospitality of Sikkim with a small library, excellent local cuisine and a home like atmosphere. Wish we could have stayed for long but couldn't due to shortage of time.

I Travelled to Sikkim in June this year, My sister insisted that we have to do a home stay, at first i really wasnt keen, but then i gave in!!!! i am thankful that i agreed to stay!!!! Our tour guide suggested we stay at Darap in Pelling!!!!

Shiva and Radha were really sweet people, they made sure we were comfortable, when we visited them their son prabal was unwell, but we were well taken care off!!! my sister did a village tour with Purna a really nice guide!!!! i unfortunately did not go on this tour has i had fever!!!! but enjoyed watching the pictures, we learnt how to make delicious momo's from Radha.

Our co-travellers were a family of three!!! very interesting family... we enjoyed their company, how ever i dont really remember their names!!!!

The rooms were clean and had all the necessary amenities. The view was just spectacular. all in all we really had a great time with the family!!!!the only sad part was we ther only for one day as we were on a tight schedule. I would love to go and stay with Shiva and Radha again

Thanks Shiva and Radha for the great experience!!!

Hi I want to book this accommodation for 22-25th May. How I do it ?
Pelling, India
Hello Sir, Greetings of the day  Three minutes of nature walk from the road to reach the Homestay. The foot path is constructed by stone which is not slippery during monsoon also. Otherwise men of the homestay will help you. Regards Shiva & family
