Our hosts were excellent. We arrived in the morning, straight from the airport after an overnight flight, just to drop off our bags but we were kindly offered a shower and freshen up in their own quarters. A peaceful overnight stay and the most amazing breakfast I've ever had followed. We were given assistance booking sea kayaking and more. Our room overlooked the ocean, as did the huge bathtub in the bathroom. The balcony for the room was spacious and had the same panoramic view. A comfortable guests lounge with ample reading material, chess set, honesty bar and complementary nightcap was on the same floor. The guesthouse is a drive from Hermanus, not a walk but this wasn't a problem for us as it was just one night.
We started our holiday in SA with a few days at 138 Marine & it was a perfect initiation. The house itself is lovely - modern, light & airy - coastal living at its finest. Situated on the rocky foreshaw at Sandbaii, it is possible to walk in both directions along the beach, but you cannot easily walk to Hermanus. This involves a drive round 3 sides of a square. The best things about 138 Marine are the excellent accommodation, breakfast which changes every day and is I think the best I've had anywhere! and the helpful advice of our hosts which was incredibly useful. Apart from recommending and booking restaurants for us, they suggested walks in Fernklooft and along the coast path, Creation Wines (a heavenly vineyard), Madre's Kitchen for lunch which was fantastic and whale…
Its a 3-5km drive to Hermanus town, but don't let that put you off. this is right on the waterfront in a quiet area, and nearly all rooms have a sea view. The rooms are also finished very tastefully and to an incredibly high standard, probably the best we stayed in in our time in SA. there is a guest lounge area on the 1st floor with large bay windows and balcony - perfect for enjoying a morning coffee or evening port/brandy. You can even make use of the telescope for a little astronomy if thats your thing. Louis was incredibly helpful. We only stayed for one night but could have spent a few days there easily.
We only stayed one night at 138 Marine Drive but it was wonderful. The room was great. Breakfast was wonderful and the view from the balcony was awesome. it was an easy drive to downtown Hermanus where there was an abudance or restaurants for lunch and supper. The highlight of our trip was on the advice of our hosts, Louis and Jena, to take the cliff walk in the hopes that there still might be some Southern Right Whales hanging around even though it was the first week of December. We were very fortunate to be able to watch 2 mother whales with their calves cavorting in the bay. Jena went out of her way to inform us of all the wonderful things to do in the area and was great at giving us driving directions and maps to get around.
We stayed at 138 Marine Beachfront during our honeymoon to South Africa in November. As other reviewers have stated, the guest house is about a 3KM drive to the centre of Hermanus but for us this wasn't a problem. Especially considering its spectacular location. The views from our room were just beautiful. You could even see the sea from our bathtub! The room itself was really nicely decorated, though would agree with a previous reviewer that a one-way window fitted to the balcony door would be good idea. Overall, it was very comfortable and the bathroom was lovely. The breakfast was the highlight not just of our stay, but our entire trip (breakfast-wise!). French toast with avocado, tomatoes etc. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Overall, if you're after amazing…
