There is not too much choice in Auli for places to stay (BONUS).
If, like me you want to get a bit closer to the mountains, have a sniff of solitude, and trek from your accommodation then you'll be happy with The Royal Village.
I was keen to stay in the "cabins" rather than the other hotel options (so gald I did), as I felt it would be a bit more fitting/real/personal for the location> I was not looking to ski (good job.....the snow was a little too thin on the ground for any real thrills there) but did want to trek. The royal Village is well located for either. (Good local guides at entrance to site).
It has amazing views over the mountains. From any cabin you are looking right at them, but not all have the very very best views. If it's not busy you can request a change (but if you're booking at a busy time, I would recommend requesting one which is to the far side and front of the site, if totaly unimpeded views are important to you).
The site is located right next door to the government complex, and this building is quite big, and pretty ugly. However, if you just turn your head left you can imagine it's just you and your cabin, and the mountains. This accommodation having hot and cold running water, comfy beds, and food available, I think is a good way to get close to the mountains without actually taking a tent.
It is kind of basic but really, with everything you will need. Cozy in size, clean enough, and not too many cabins. A bit draughty in winter, but heaters provided. The place in reality is still being finished, so the web site slightly oversells what is available right now (I.e. Restaurant under constuction.) Room service was provided instead, but very limited choice of food, and no other option available(plus limited communication possible with available staff, but not unfriendly). I was there in winter (I think it would be a different story in summer). As only one other couple were staying, and given the location, only a skeleton staff/service/food was there. I did not really mind this, kind of preferred it. However, anyone who was wanting the "luxury" described in the web site would have been disappointed.
Value for money? Given the 'oversell' , plus the comparison of other places I stayed, I would say it is slightly overpriced. Once finished (soon) I think things may balance out, but for service, cleanliness, condition of rooms, standard of food I did experience better on this trip.
On the other hand, given the alternative options in Auli (price/standard/location)....I would stay here again. Also....... let's not forget......this particular location is really great, outstanding!
Having coincidentally met, and chatted extensively with the management (super friendly) I think things are only going to improve, and the accomodation should live up to the great location. I hope the cabins get a bit of a spruce up to bring them in line with the advertising, or the web site tones it down a bit.
So in summary....If you are really expecting 'Swiss style luxury mountain cabins".......forget it. If you accept "Indian style luxury mountain cabins", and are happier away from Hotels, you'll love it here. I DID.

Perfect location & service.Staff was cooperative.10 mins walk from the cable car which takes you to the skiing track. Food was good. No indoor heating in the Dinning Room which at times is badly required in freezing cold.

We arrived at Auli at about 1pm with the help of the hotel staff as the road from Joshimath to Auli was filled with snow. The hotel staff arranged a vehicle for us as our vehicle was skidding a lot in the snow.
However, when we reached the hotel, we figured out that the alpine huts were terribly small and claustrophobic. When we reached there, the hotel staff took close to half an hour to clean the rooms when we had informed them well in advance that we were on the way to Auli. Also, we were promised heaters in all the rooms but the hotel staff told us that because its snowing heavily there is a power cut and heaters wont work. The power cut continued for the total length of our stay there. In the adjoining GMVN(Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) Guest house, however, we got to know that they had big generators and heaters were working for sometime. In sub-zero temperatures, heaters are a necessity. They switched on the generators only from 7pm to 10:45 pm which allowed us to switch on lights and tv for some time. The food and the service was good though.

We were a group of people who had planned a trip to Auli. We had already stayed once at the Cliff Top Resort in Auli and wanted to stay somewhere close to the same location. Note: Cliff Top Resort is actually at a higher altitude and you need to take the chair lift to reach there. Being on higher level, it has a much better location and a much better view. I called up the hotel number (and after multiple calls) someone picked up. When I asked about the location of the resort (and I clearly mentioned Cliff top resort); the person told me its near that only and in fact has a much better view. We made a second call to understand the amenities, particularly food of the hotel, and the manager told us in a very arrogant tone that they are running a resort so they have everything.

Once we reached there, our ordeal started.

1) Location: The resort is located just near the GMVN Hotel (not the huts) which is at the starting point of the chair lift and not the top point. This was the first disappointment as had expected that the resort is at the top (I mean we had inquired over a call as well). The location is good, but it was not where we were told.

2) The rooms: The rooms are fine with a double bed accommodation and TV, running water etc

3) Restaurant: This is something for which, I wish I could give a 0 star (unfortunately 1 is the minimum). Please note that the restaurant is vegetarian (they do give eggs) but no other form of non-vegetarian food is available. The entire group was of non-vegetarian people and we were really looking forward to a good local non-vegetarian meal. The second aspect, they have a limited 2 pager menu (for please do not get lured by the description of a multi-cuisine restaurant). Further, majority of the things from the menu are missing. For example, you cannot have a cheese omelette, you cannot have juice, you cannot have a lot of other things they they write in their menu. Please also note that no-where in their description they have mentioned that it is a vegetarian restaurant.

4) Service: Again, I would want to rate this with a -5 star. The one thing that can differentiate a hotel/ resort from others in the level of service provided. This one, I do not think even knows the definition of what service is. There are so many examples where I actually lost my cool as we were not being served or taken care of. Please note that I typically like to tip the staff at the beginning of the stay and I did the same this time as well, so I do not think we gave them a reason to be serving us badly.
- We had reached around 5 PM from a long road journey of 16 hours (from Delhi), we asked them if we could get something to eat. Their first reaction was NO, as they had started to prepare the kitchen for Dinner! After literally pleading, we got some pakodas and chai.
- Around 7 PM, we were sitting down chitchatting and we needed some more snacks for us. We were refused saying that they had already started preparing dinner. We had to go to another hotel and get some snacks packed for us.
- Although the dinner order (as per their boards in the hotel) should be given by 9:30, they insist you to give by 7:30 and you cannot make changes later on!
- Next day breakfast, of the majority of this things missing from the menu, we settled with some aloo puri, aloo paratha and omelette with bread. Believe me I have had really bad aloo puri in life but this one takes the cake in being worst of them. They literally were BAD. They do not serve butter or curd or anything with the parathas until you ask them 5 times!
- The omelette and bread was made in a manner that the layer of egg covered the bread. Three of us were having it, when one of us realized that the bread had fungus! The second person checked and her bread also had fungus, so we left them. The third person was a fast eater so by that time he had finished the bread inside. We called the waiter and showed him the bread, he went back to the kitchen and comes back and says that they cannot replace it as the entire loaf had fungus! He very casually said, we did not check that and he was unapologetic for it. When we say the bill, I got more furious. Though they had not included the 2 omelette in the bill, they actually had included the third one (which was unfortunately the one in which we had finished the bread!) I mean I did not even know how to react at that time.

I can go on and on on how the room water which come in the bathroom was blackish in color and other things which are absolutely pathetic with the hotel. So, I would say, stay away from them and do not be lured by the pricing. The Cliff top resort costs double but it is 100 times better than this one.

Basically a cluster of cottages in the midst of and overlooking Himalayas (Nanda Devi Peak on the right of the cottages). The view is so amazing that it will take you a few hours to realize ... where you are! Words fail me when I try to describe the view from these cottages.
The accommodation is basic and service is average. Considering the location, food is pretty good.

ATTN: Before checking in, please ensure that there are no holes on the floor/wall in your cottage/bathroom. Move the furniture and check for holes. If you forget to do this, rats/spiders may disturb you.

The manager of the resort is a non-responsive, non-proactive guy, but the staff are very helpful. I would highly recommend this place, especially for the location.

Excellent location. Hut on the front row has excellent views. Average service with limited options for meal. Cable TV didn,t work as cable connection from JOSIMATH was not functioning. Dining Room was under renovation. No indoor heating in the Dinning Room which at times is badly required in freezing cold. Be forewarned of lack of piped water supply because of freezing of water in overhead tank and pipeline in extreme cold. Staff was unhelpful in arranging the water from alternate source. Allternate option for Dinning is the GMVN Rest House which is very close by.

Auli Resort was an amazing place to stay for 2-3 days. some very nice cottages/huts all wooden interior even the bath rooms with attached geysers. They have this nice dinning room which is common for all and a view is terrific. its a big glass cabin with a capacity of around 25/30 people for dining. There is a view of Trishul range, hathi, ghoda palkhi and another 2/3 peaks which are worth staring at. its on the mountain slope so a lot of vegetation and blooming flowers can be seen and they also have a big garden around the resort and its cottages which makes you morning as good as anything else.

There are two very friendly black dogs when i had visited who guard the place. Now its a family of around 6-7 :)

all in all a place worth to visit when you are anywhere near Joshimath or Auli itself.
