Wonderful stay in this quaint property, beautufully maintained and food is excellent. The rooms give you a vibe of british era. Location is accessible. I went there before Covid. The care taker is a nice person.

A few of my relatives went to LansDowne and they came back with pathetic reviews of the place. This was the reason we were pretty apprehensive going there in the first place.

However, when we reached FairyDale, we loved it! Absolutely loved it. We realized that our relatives had stayed out of the town next to some villagers' farms... a totally wrong place to stay.

To enjoy LansDowne, you need to be at FairyDale. It is one of the three resorts that are actually in the town.

There are not many things to do in Lansdowne (yes.. please don't bother going there if you want to do sightseeing or any activities... Lansdowne is for spending peaceful and calm time). In Lansdowne, you need to choose your resort very carefully. And FairyDale turned out to be a great choice for us! It's the best place to stay in LansDowne.

Let's look at the goods and the bads.

Goods:
- It's a 1912 cottage (bungalow) and gives a pretty good historic feel. Very likeable.
- The location is excellent. You are 8-9 minutes of walk away from the market.. and right into the nature's lap.
- There is good parking space available.
- The food was a HIGH point. Really high. These guys serve terrific home made food. We absolutely loved each morsel that we dug into. Try some chicken curry and rice. Yumm!
- There are three types of rooms. We stayed in a suite, which we found to be pretty spacious.
- We found the room rents to be pretty reasonable. Especially because we went in off season. Really reasonable.
- The cottage area is very beautiful and very well maintained. There are lots and lots of plants and trees and pebbles. They have used beer bottles to decorate the outside sitting area. Everything is extremely clean and well maintained. Very impressive.
- There is a lot of space to spend quality time. You could spend hours in the sitting area, bathing in sunshine. You could take a walk around the cottage and on the path leading to the cottage. Heck, you could even hop on to the mountain next to the cottage and do a picnic. We did that and had great fun.
- The owner is very nice and always looking out to make sure you are comfortable. His son (Nishant) is also very sweet and decent. The manager and other staff members are pretty
courteous (though I must confess the staff members rarely smile).
- The owner has a dog (a lovely, friendly lab named Pluto) who roams around the cottage. If you love dogs, you'll love your time there. Really nice doggy.
- Very neat and clean rooms.
- The food prices were EXTREMELY reasonable. Very nice food, very good quality, at very reasonable prices.

Bads:
- It is a little tough to locate them. They don't have many boards for directions (the owner told me it was due to some restrictions being in an army area). Having said that, locals are friendly
and they can easily guide you.
- They don't accept debit/credit cards. A big booo to that. Please carry cash. Note: there is an SBI ATM in the market.
- There are fixed kitchen timings for lunch and dinner. Outside those timings, you can order snacks round the clock (maggi was delicious... so were the aloo paranthes).
- No room heater (at least not when we were there).
- We weren't given an extra blanket despite most of the other rooms being empty. I have no idea why. We later realized that it was better of talking to the owner and his son than staff members. Some how, we felt that the owners were more forthcoming.
- The curtains had scope for improvement. Not the best.
- No shampoo in the wash room. Carry yours. (soap and toilet paper was available).
- No power backup.
- The way leading to the cottage is a little tricky. It allows for one vehicle a time and is a little bumpy. Having said that, it is a bit adventurous as well. So, it gives you a good feel even before you reach the cottage. This is a plus and a minus point, depending on the perspective.

Note:
- Your vehicle would be checked for alcohol before you begin the climb to the mountain. I think this is a dry region and you are not allowed to carry alcohol. If you can hide, well and good :)

The alcohol you get in the market is a bit expensive. A bottle of beer for 120 rupees.

Please say YES if you found the review helpful.

I was in a dilemma to write this review. On one hand I wanted to share a great experience and a discovery that I chanced upon, on the other I was afraid that I would be adding to the ever increasing number of people who would like to go to this piece of heaven after reading this review. By this this jewel could lose out on its uniqueness of being a quite, little town in the hills, about 230 kms from New Delhi, India. But then how long can you hide a gem that shines so bright. I have been planning a trip to Lansdowne for the last 3 odd years but was not being able to culminate it into a journey. I guess the time to visit Lansdowne had now come. So after a quick planning in early July 2009, I planned the trip with my wife, two kids and my parents to this lovely place. Lansdowne is home to the veer Garhwalis and HQ for the legendary Garhwal Rifles. It is a mere 230-odd kms away from New Delhi and you can reach here in about 6 hours via Ghaziabad, Meerut, Bijnore, Najibabad & Kotdwar. The roads are good pretty much all through the route. The steady hill climb after Kotdwar is beautiful but only a curtain raiser to what's waiting for you at Lansdowne. Halfway through the climb, you can roll down the windows to let the cool breeze touch your face. The dense Pine & Deodar tree forests offer beauty and cool climate. I had booked us at the Fairydale Resort, one of 3 private places to stay (2-3 others are government owned) after a lot of homework. What excited me the most about lansdowne was that there was noting to do there! No malls, no cimena halls, no big shops or markets, no local specialities, no nothing. This is what sets it apart from the rest of the more famous getaways from Delhi. The road to Fairydale is hardly a road. It is a rough way cut out of hills and requires skilled driving to drive for about 200 mtrs before reaching the resort. My first reaction on reaching there was one of awe. The resort is owned by a Dr. Shah but has been managed by the Khandelwal family since over 12 years now. It was built in 1912 by the British who set up the HQ for Garhwal Rifles here in late 1800's. I met up with Nishant Khandelwal and his man friday Raghuveer who is always there to assist. Fairydale is nestled amongst pine and Baanj trees and is truly a sight to see. Its like staying at your own home in the hills. They have a website and are easily accessible on phone. The food was home cooked and served with warmth and affection. Nishant (the managing family member) and his staff play cricket in late afternoon and my 8-year old cricket enthusiast son joined them. All in all Lansdowne is a great place to be and Fairydale in Lansdowne is the place to stay. More on Lansdowne and Fairydale in my next review...

Fairydale Resort is the most centrally located resort in Lansdowne. It may be small on accomodation but very spacious. You have your own luxury hut and a decent lawn. Sit, relax and embrace the chilly air of Lansdowne. All the destinations are at a walking distance from the resort.
For budget travellers this is the best option. For people who wish to relax from the hustle bustle of city life, think no more. Also the food is so delicious , probably the best in lansdowne and the view of the mountains.

It is small hotel, built in 1912. To reach the hotel is a narrow small winding road. Mr. Khandelwal, the manager of the Hotel, was helpful and looked after us well. The food was fresh and good.
This is a hotel for people travelling with tight budget expecting a decent stay and great food. It i clean but not luxurious.
Overall, I enjoyed my break, although there are lot of curfews for what you can do at what time, as it is army cantt.

I stayed with my fiancee in 2011 and it was just an unplanned trip from New Delhi to Lansdowne. While checking out for different options to stay at Lasndowne, I found Fairydale an economic and best in its class.
We were reaching late at Lansdowne quite late so i called up the resort and asked them to keep some food for us as they close their restaurant by 22:00Hrs. The staff was quite supportive and they took our order and stored fresh food for us.
When we reached Lansdowne, we were unable to find out our way to the resort, called them again to check the location..the reception guy was constabt on line with me to guide me until i reached the resort.
The staff did the best they could do at wee hours, and made us comfortable.
The breakfast at the garden was really amazing, hot and delicious.

Last year a trip was planned but the destination was not pin pointed. A little brainstorming, of a few days later my mom decided upon Lansdowne explore. It was a three day escape into the mountains. We didn't make any online reservations. Going to a distant place and searching for a place to find temporary asylum has its own charm. Basically, you get to see with your own eyes how every establishment actually is rather than browsing for some place online and be disappointed later.

The hotel and resort scene in Lansdowne is rather scarce. you won't find many. The hill station being a cantonment area can be a big corroboratory factor.

Fairydale Resort is located within the city only a little distance away from the main market. The resort is on the banks of a valley and the location and the view couldn't have better. A small trek is all it requires of enter the resort for the main road. You can take your car because for a bonus they even have a parking facility.

The resort is a colonial structure basically a house where possibly a high ranking of the erstwhile British empire in India used to live. It has seven rooms (approx.) in the main structure itself which I believe was remodelled to accommodate seven rooms. Inside the vicinity is also an out house completely detached from the main building which has three rooms. They have another outhouse far closer to the onlooking valley where the resort arranges a buffet dinner.

The fare is INR 5000 for a night but with a little bargain you can bring the price down by as much as ten to fifteen percent. Breakfast and dinner is included in the price. You would have to arrange yourself some lunch in the city if you so wish to eat.
The rooms are vast spaces made for four but can easily house more. If you ask the management will the arrangements for extra bedding at no extra cost.

There is a big lawn where you can soak up on some sun and even play some games.

The food they serve is really good. You will go for a second or third serving. The staff is very cooperative and helpful. They make sure that your stay is memorable.
Overall, a resort that will make you miss it after you go.

If ever in Lansdowne be sure to stay at Fairydale Resort.

Advance booking is highly advised by depositing advance in bank a/c to get the hotel booked in Lansdowne if you are travelling on weekends or in summer vacations, as there are just 6 hotels/ resorts in main Lansdowne city (others are atleast 5 km away in some villages). 2 out of 6 of the hotels/resorts are of GMVN, one at tip in top and other one adjacent to fairy dale resort ( where we stayed), and remaining 3 hotels are in main market of Lansdowne, they are Mayur hotel, Lans View hotel and Yatri( or Gayatree )hotel. Last 3 can be avoided as they don't have any view from any of the rooms and moreover no open area or lawn to sit in sun or see valley/mountain. Trust me you will get bored sitting inside the room as windows of the room in these hotels open towards covered balcony/dining area inside the hotel. Coming back to the resort for which I am writing review.
Fairy dale resort which clocked 100 years in 2012, in my view is the best place to stay in entire lansdowne as I visited all the hotels of lansdowne (since got just one day availability at this place). They charge 3.5 K for one night for their room number 2 which had one double bed in the inner room and a single bed along with tv, dressing table, sofa set in the outer room, bathroom was big, neat, towels were clean and toilet seat was disinfected. The best part of this room was that it had 6 windows !! All the rooms of this heritage property are of different areas as this bunglow (number 29 )in Lansdowne is converted into resort later. You can also get a double bedroom for two at 2.5k. And family rooms for 4~5 at 4.5k but the window of family rooms open towards parking. To me it doesn't really matters as you would be hardly sitting in the room.
Bed tea, breakfast and dinner is included in the package. Don't try to get it excluded from the package as food here is delicious and moreover you won't find options outside, as nearest restaurant is in the market which is around1~ 1.5 km down the resort. Trust me you won't like to skip the bonfire and the environment over there to go to the market in night to try your luck getting food of your choice. Mr. Ashok Khandelwal and Nishant, father and son duo, who run the show at this resort are very co-operative and ever ready to help the guests with any sort of requirements like taxis for commuting, milk for kids, board games to kill time in lazy afternoon.
Greatest plus with this resort to which every one who would been there would agree is that you can do trekking to Bhalla Tal, Church and Tip in Top..
PS: This is my second review and i am not much into writing also i tried to go much into details, so please excuse if you find this review boring.

The hotel has amazing location and has the advantage of being one of the only decent hotels inside Lansdowne (being a cantonnment area). It is full of beautiful flowers and has nice places to sit out and relax and is surrounded by a pine forest.

But unfortunately the interiors are far from well maintained. They are shabby, bedsheets are not clean nor are the bathrooms. The corner room near the reception was slightly better. I am not one of those who likes fancy modern buildings. I like old even musty bungalows :-) but that does not mean no investment will be made on basic maintenance and amenities.

I would not also complain if the prices were lower. We paid 4500 per night including breakfast and dinner and at the price room interiors could definitely be improved. From reading some of the reviews here the price seems to vary a lot between 1000 (October) and 5000 not explained by season.

The dinner is not bad though not great either. Breakfast was good. They made good pakoras and tea for our snacks on order.

The hotel is also built on many levels with long set of steps in between so may not be too good for older people though I myself loved it.

If this hotel was not the only hotel in that area I doubt it would be able to compete. If the owner would make some investments it would be really an amazing place to relax and enjoy nature. Lansdowne itself is beautiful, quiet and untouched.. A joy to visit.
