My partner and I stayed for two night and we had a lovely stay.

The main positive for us was that the hotel is dog friendly - dogs are also welcome in the bar area. There is a garden to the rear of the pub which is convenient for the dog.

The room was basic but nice and what you would expect for a hotel above a pub.
The room had a hair dryer and a kettle, along with tea, coffee and milk.
The room could do with updating. A fresh lick of paint on the walls, ceiling and gloss on the doors and skirtings would go a long way to improve the look of the room - but the decor wasn’t really a problem for us and didn’t affect our stay.
The bed was not the comfiest and was two single duvan beds pushed together.

The staff are really friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was nice with plenty of choice (continental style). Tables were made up ready for every room each morning, with separate stations for each table - each station had its own kettle, toaster and selection of cereals & Preserves.

The chip shop next door was also very nice. You can choose to eat in the pub and the food will be delivered to you on a plate.

The high street is a 5 minute walk away with a Co op convenience store. The hotel is also within walking distance (15/20 mins) to Pwll Y Wrach, which is a lovely walk with a water fall.

My main negative would be that the hotel took money from our card without consent. We ordered food from the chip shop and some drinks and were told to pay later (night 1). There wasn’t anyone around later that day to pay. After night 2 we went to check out and pay the bill for the food we had the previous day but we were told that the money had already been taken because “we already had your card details”. A little scary that a business can take money without us being present with our debit card and there to type in the pin.

All in all a nice stay.

We stopped here for lunch on our tour of Wales. The take away chip shop is attached next door to the hotel.

Meal freshly cooked to order. Staff were helpful, chatty and friendly. Food was very nicely prepared. The weather was nice and it was recommended that we sat in the back garden to eat our lunch. We sat in the hotel garden which was very pleasant in the sunshine. Hubby ordered a coffee which was brought out to him from the hotel complete with cutlery to use with lunch. We were also able to use the hotel facilities before driving on.

Very lovely people and the food was great. Many thanks.

Working nearby in Brecon town Centre, this hotel was a 15 min drive from site. Upon arrival I was greeted by the owner who was very welcoming and explained the procedure whilst staying about Covid etc.. Showed us to our rooms and told us what to do about the breakfast. Rooms where very nice and comfy. TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. Ensuite which was very clean. All in all a very pleasant place to stay and would recommend and stay again if needed.

I booked a three night stay at The Castle Hotel with my husband and friends (2 doubles). I initially booked through Booking.com but Ian the owner, phoned me the week before and advised me to cancel and book directly with him, offering a small reduction in the price. In hindsight, I should have questioned this.

As soon as we arrived I was disappointed to find that it was well below my expectations. The lounge/ dining/ bar area was not inviting. There were plastic tablecloths on all tables and only 4 comfy chairs which were shabby and smelt. Portions of the area were also screened off.

There was no restaurant as such - the staff would go to the chip shop which was part of the property (the main part of the business) and get your chips for you. The bar was only small and did not provide a variety of drinks as advertised. Overall, this was not the hotel/ restaurant I expected.

The rooms were clean and had benefitted from a newly fitted carpet but there were no frills and was what you would expect of a budget room with no wardrobe, headboard and an iron hung on the wall where you would expect a picture.

Throughout our 3 night stay, the room was not serviced. The bins were not emptied or tea and coffee replenished.

The continental breakfast consisted of a toaster and a communal fridge containing yoghurt, milk, individually vacuum packed cheese with cereals, bread jams etc. No croissants or pastries as one review mentioned. Ian, the owner, did serve you Rijo coffee and was very kind and helpful, booking us in at local pubs for evening meals.

If we had paid £55 per night, which was what I saw the room advertised for on the second night of our stay, I would have thought that it was a fair price. However, we were charged £95 per night.

I wanted to leave after the first night but Ian was only prepared to offer us half of our money back so we decided to stick it out.

Joke of a place ZERO customer service. I made a booking accidentally clicked the wrong day… spent the next 7 hours calling and emailing the location to cancel so they wasn’t stuck with a room that someone could use. They finally emailed me back 7.5 hours later and said we have cancelled your room oh and ironically the fee was the exact amount I paid.

We have stayed at the castle Hotel as it was 10min away from 3 riding stables and not far away from walking trails, perfect location. Delicious fish and chips, very affordable menu and incredibly friendly staff. Will be returning for more horse riding and this is definitely a place to stay over.

Our family group of 7 had originally planned a reunion stay in Builth Wells, but because of a problem with accommodation we were obliged to look elsewhere.

However, we considered it fortunate when we were able to secure 4 double rooms each with their own private bathroom at the Castle Hotel. Being in the Brecons it seemed to be a good alternative.

A warm welcome from Ian the helpful owner made a favourable first impression, and the comfortable, clean, spacious bedrooms, fulfilled our expectations. Each room was well equipped with a tv, hospitality tray and toiletries, and we were all able to enjoy a comfortable night's rest. Continental breakfast was included in the room rate and free car parking completed the picture.

The only slight minus being the windy narrow stairs; although we were fully aware of this at the time of booking two of our group having mobility issues were able to manage satisfactorily. This did not detract from what was a very pleasant stay.

We would be happy to visit again at some future date.

We stayed at The Castle Hotel for a quick escape away from the norm in the Midlands. After a friendly welcome from Ian, we headed off to visit the nearby Bronllys Castle, a 2 minute drive up the road.
You can park in the layby opposite the castle. We booked the family room which was really spacious and the kids loved being able to access the beer garden easily to play on the slide, as the room was on the ground floor. My husband and I obviously enjoyed the beer garden for other reasons! 😉. The kids also liked the fact that the hotel had its own chip shop and locals and patrons were able to eat in the hotel. The bar and chip shop staff couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was self service and continental, which was very cleverly organised so you had your own area containing kettle, toaster, cereals and bread. There was also a fridge well stocked with juice, milk and yoghurts. So much nicer than previous hotels we’d stayed in where people fight over rashers of bacon !!! Really lovely place to stay with a pretty town. The craft shop in the centre is definitely worth a visit !

After reading reviews we didn’t expect much from this hotel.
Upon arrival - at 4pm- we parked in their small car park (one of the only positives) and walked into a very dark food/ bar area. A young man greeted us, as did the overwhelming stench of fish.
He explained about breakfast and then gave us our key and led us up dirty stairs to our room.
Thankfully, the fish smell stayed downstairs but was replaced by a damp, stale smell in the room.
The room (room 3) was large but very dirty.
Thick cobwebs hung around the room with a few spiders. The bath was very dirty and the bath mat was gross. Neither myself or my partner walked on the carpet/ floor barefoot as we didn’t want our feet to get dirty.
The bed was okay, the pillows were quite flat. We kept the window open all night to let the smell out so were quite cold!
We opted not to have breakfast after seeing (the night before) that the cereal boxes were open and one was out of date. The toaster was really dirty too.
One other positive would be the location- Talgarth is small and has a few shops/ pubs (none of which we went in because we arrived on a Sunday! But they looked lovely)
We did not speak to any staff at the hotel as we only stayed for one night so didn’t see the point.
I would not recommend staying at this hotel and would absolutely not go back.

Having booked a double room for two (with dog) including continental breakfast for £88, I wasn’t expecting much.
I left feeling we had found a little gem which we hope to return to.
So why the five stars?
Ok so the basics:
Good size room, clean fresh bedding, towels, toiletries, good size ensuite with large shower. Tea/ coffee facilities in room. Flatscreen tv with usual free channels and Netflix. Free Wi-Fi at good enough speed to stream.

Breakfast:
Each room had its own breakfast table downstairs with toaster, loaf of brown and white bread. Jams, cheese etc. Several cereals, yoghurt, fruits and fruit juice. No limit on how much you can have. Dog allowed downstairs with us.

Staff: owner/ host were very friendly and helpful. They get that you want to relax and have a stress free time.

Other things: free off road parking, hotel hosts the local chippy so supper was fish and chips for us.

So to conclude: for £88 only a fool would expect a fine dining luxury boutique establishment. This does the basics well in a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect to use as a base for hiking, exploring the beautiful area or the Hay Festival. Situated in a small town which is quiet but has a lovely community feel to it.
