I ended up staying here for a couple of nights. Suzanne is a very interesting personality and a great host. She prepares wonderful meals with few ingredients. I would describe La Biosfera as basic. Two dogs, a cat and the chickens around gave a felling of a home, not a ho(s)tel. But don't let that hold you back, it is...

As a budding Permaculturist I really appreciate what Suzanne has going on at her reserve and retreat. The place has been continuously added to over the years with the help of volunteers and they've maintained the integrity of the place in recycling local materials where ever possible. The facilities are well established now having been in operation for a number...

Suzanne is awesome. As is her nephew, Oz. They are great conversationalists, interesting and quirky all in the right ways. Yes, it isn't the cleanest place. And yes, it isn't for everyone but if you are into having experiences that you'll never forget, are laid back and have a strong stomach, then by all means, go. It is beautiful and...

All the people at La Biosfera were great to hang out with and talk to. They are only just beginning but I would really recommend stopping by if your near Esteli, Jinotega, or Matagalpa. One of the people showed me the cloud forest bat cave and showed me all around. A real family like environment.

I've been staying at La Biósfera for nearly two weeks now and it's been a really perfect place to have a 'soft landing' in Nicaragua. On the side of a mountain on 22 acres, it has hiking trails, a bat cave, and organic agriculture. It offers a really peaceful, cool, and relaxing rural experience. But at the same time, it's...

Amenities

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
La Biosfera Reserve & Retreat is a volunteer supported initiative in forest preservation, clean water cultivation, and poverty alleviation. It features an earthbag lodge, compost toilets, recycled truck tire belts stretched over 400-yr old zapotillo wood bunks, camping, glamping, libraries, telescopes, board games, puzzles, art supplies, temescal, plunge pool, trails, waterfalls, cave, alternative healing therapies, some philosophy and astronomy orientation, and great meals. Targeted to the somewhat budgeted, it should be noted that it is a project with a rotation of volunteers, apprentices, and occasional tourists; as such, travelers should treat it as an educative adventure or retreat from the material world, rather than a 5-star resort. ... more   less

“The bunks are great if you want to sleep indoors and there's even a cute little private room, but I personally loved being out in the tent!”
