The Saratha Vilas, built by a wealthy Chettiar merchant in the early 1900s, is a prime example of the luxurious mansion unique to the Chettinad region. The 45000 sq. ft. property, including buildings, courtyards and gardens, has been painstakingly restored, and converted into an eight bedroom heritage hotel by two French architects passionate about the preservation of Chettinad and its history.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this Chettiar mansion, thoughtfully and tastefully converted by two French architects. The owners were around and were discreet but chatty and informative when approached. We felt very welcomed also by all staff and especially the charming and

Lovely room - spacious, restful, and hooray no TV! The common outdoor areas were beautiful - particularly the courtyard that our room opened into, with various seating options, and the swimming pool area at the back. I could comfortably walk around the whole place in bare feet,

Dear Doctor Flo Thank you very much for your review. We are so sorry to hear that you had an issue with the invoice and that dinners have been charged by mistake. Most probably we were not here when it happened, I supposed that if I have been at Saratha Vilas, you naturally, have asked us to solve the problem. I don’t understand at all the reaction of our staff, it is not a hotel policy. As we don’t have any guest in the name of doctor Flo, I cannot contact you. You can easily find our contact on Internet, and ask for the refund of the dinner Again, sorry for the mistake

This is a well done resort with an almost perfect restoration of a chettiar mansion. Minimal but comfortable. The inner courtyards are wonderful and there are many nooks at corners to relax, apart from the room. The only comment that I would make is that our room seemed a little

Dear Madam We don’t understand what gives you the idea that the Indians are not welcome? There is no discrimination. It is with a deep sadness that we read your review. We are very surprise as the people of all countries are most welcome. In fact, during the peak season the foreigners are booking well in advance and as we have only 10 rooms it is very quickly fully booked. It is the reason why there are so many foreigners. Concerning the food, it is true that we are not preparing for the dinner the traditional food of Chettinad, as the South Indian dinner is very simple and light. Our guests are expecting something more elaborate. When you book a room at our hotel, you receive an Email with the description of the kind of food we propose. The traditional food is served for the lunch, and as it is only fresh food, the order should be placed 2 hours before. Our cooks have served Chettiar families for many year. You have booked for 2 nights and you cancelled at the last minute one night, as per our terms and conditions we should have collected the rate of the full stay, but we have, as a special case, waved only some cancellation fees. We are surprise why after such a gift you can write such an unfair review.

We spent 4 nights in this quiet heritage haven . The brochure in the room gave us all the information needed to explore the magnificent splendour of Chettiar mansions in Chettinad region. The staff were most helpful particularly Mr Sampat, the manager on site who made sure that

Hello, it is possible to have a table separate. It is very flexible. The guests can also come to the common table whenever they want, and there is not fixed timing for diner. Concerning the consumption of alcohol, the rules are very strict in Tamil Nadu, it is not allowed to bring alcoholic drinks in the common spaces. Only the hotel with 21 rooms and more can get a licence.
