We went here because our usual spot for the last twenty five years, Hotel Laguna Bacalar, was booked up completely. Also, the town of Bacalar has been discovered! It is now full of tourists and backpackers and the tranquility has gone down and prices up....More
This "resort' is a really cute little hotel.
First of all, the dirt road mentioned by many others below is literally not for the faint hearted. Because of the reviews below we had rented a Jeep Patriot. Quite a solid car you would think would...More
This resort is located right on the water. The water is not salt water. Very warm and amazing picture op's. Really fun for all ages. Waterslides into lagoon are really fun for the kids young and old. Gets really busy with locals on weekends.

We walked (along with others who were obviously going to the same place for a variety of tours) about 2-3 blocks to the Native Tours office. They provided a bus and tour guide to the ruins (very interesting) and then took us by a specially built vehicle (see below) for a delicious lunch and lovely afternoon at Bacalar. The trip back to the ship was only about 45 min. as I recall. We would advise not to rent a car and try it on your own because the access road to the resort is very long and extremely rough - you could tear up a rental vehicle, even a high clearance one. Get in touch w/ Native Tours or the resort itself.
