So we just got back from a three day trip to Bacalar where we stayed at Villas Karalv. First the good: Large rooms with seating area and fridge sink and microwave. The grounds are really nice with a central courtyard palapa and, a table with 4 chairs, overlooking the lake. The views are incredable and the lakefront seatig area at the dock is wonderful. They also have good airconditioning in the rooms and, if you are still around late enough in the morning, there is fresh coffee. As well, there was no issue with our tour boat picking us up right off the dock at the location (some places either do not allow this, or have a charge to do this). The young fellow looking after the place was also accommodating and helpful to the best of his ability. The not so good: The coffee is not available early enough in the morning (did not seem to be made before 8 am). The room we were in was not well equipped - no drinking glasses, poor selection of cutlery, fridge was quite rusty. The place just has an air of having seen better days. The internet was spotty at best. The bad: Others have commented on this - the bed is tiny! Honestly, I have not slept two to a bed this small since I was still living at home - many many years ago. Interestingly enough, there is 1 king-size bed available in 1 room. Unfortunately, our travel friends won the coin toss even before we opened the doors to the rooms. It is also advertised as a 1 bedroom suite. The suite is the bedroom - there is no separate bedroom, just one big room. Now as to the fold down sofa - really a futon with delusions of grandeur, and no support at all. Having spent 3 nights on this version of a modern day torture chamber, I can honestly say the floor looked more comfrtable (reason for sleeping on the futon - please reference the bed size as described above). As well, there was no bedding available in the room for the 'SOFA". Luckily, we had packed out own bedding, including sheets, pillows and blankets (also not available in the room). Now - on to the peacocks. There is not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4 but in fact 5 peacocks. Said birds spend each night screeching at anything that moves, or they think has moved, close to their cages and, the cages are less than 50 feet from the rooms. My wife was reduced to using sleeping pills to get through the night, while I resorted to wine, copious amounts of wine. Finally, the dock seating area, while wonderful, was accessed by a set of stairs, without railings, that gave the 4 of us (ranging in age from 60 - 70+) difficulty when perfectly sober. This excluded the area from our use for a glass or 2 of wine in the evening. An attempt to scale these Mayan like stairs after even just a couple of glasses of wine was beyond our skill level. In conclusion, I gave the place a 4 star rating based on the price per night, the courtyard and the spectacular views of the lake. remove these factores and the place rapidly would decend to, at the most, a 2 out of 5. If you are looking for a place that is a cut above the hostels and does not cost an arm and a leg, this may work for you.
