Furnas Lake Forest Living (we used to call Furnas Lake Villas) is considered one of the boldest tourist and architectural projects on the island of São Miguel. It became particularly known around the world for the Scandinavian input on the architecture of the buildings, but also on the interior design, while maintaining high modern standards and at the same respecting nature. Keeping a familiar and welcoming charisma and a modern and relaxing environment. Here, gardens and dense mountainous vegetation surround a peaceful area with 10 modern and fully equipped bungalows, swimming pool, reading areas, restaurant and bar, family and play room. Guest can hike and bike around the property and the lake (just 150 m from us), horse riding, canoeing, as well as all the other activities that the Islands offer, from whale watching to snorkelling and surfing. Furnas Lake Villas is just 35 min drive from the airport!

Detailed Reviews
We booked to stay here for four nights in early June 2022 on our first visit to the Azores. The location is absolutely stunning, a woodland setting in its own caldeira. The lodges were comfortable and had amazing views on all sides and it was possible to feel part of nature even when inside. Unfortunately, on the first day of our holiday I had a bad fall whilst out walking and damaged my leg quite seriously. When we got back to Furnas Lake Forest Living the lady on duty took great care to clean and dress my cuts and was invaluable in recommending the best place for treatment. I ended up on crutches, unable to do anything, but the staff were incredible. They did everything they could to help, including bringing food to me in the cabin every night. And the food was amazing!!! In what was a very difficult situation for me it was the wonderful location and the kindness of the staff that carried me through and kept my spirits high. I am still on crutches but making progress and my aim is to be fully mobile by next June when I will definitely return to the Azores and Furnas Lake Forest Living to do the holiday properly. Thank you so much to everyone there and see you next year!

The weather was not great when we were in Furnas this week but this small free standing rooms was a delightful find. Clean although sparse- it was a great oasis outside of Furnas. The first day we had stated we would be having breakfast within their time period but toward the end- there was barely any food available- it felt like you were getting leftovers because you were. The second day, after bringing this to their attention the offerings were more plentiful and delicious. I think this is a unique place and worth a visit.

Accommodation
We stayed in one of the villas which had a bedroom, a kitchenette and fridge (well-equipped to cook and dine in) and a sitting area with a convertible sofa.
We got the villa as we needed two bedrooms but the sitting area has no blinds, no black out curtains so it’s definitely not an option to sleep. We eventually had to move the mattress from the sofa to the bedroom and crammed up in the bedroom. No conditioner no shampoo, just an 2in1 shower gel. When we came back at 16:30 one day, the villa had not been serviced as they said they prioritised the rooms that checked-out.
Staff
Was kind but need training. We were not told about the bicycles they had emailed me we could borrow, the zip-line advertised on the website is not an option unless 10 people sign up. The hotel has many lovely aspects but it needs to take it up a notch to meet the standards they want to achieve
Restaurant
That’s definitely the soul of the place with great attention to detail and a love for the products and their authenticity. All locally sourced and cooked with creativity by a wonderful chef. I would have loved to hear more about the “story”, their approach to cooking and their philosophy on our first meal. I think guests would enjoy that and understand better all the work that goes behind each dish.

Staying at Furnas Lake Living is like staying with Family. From the moment we arrived at 8am they accommodated us with an exceptional breakfast and early check-in. The attentive owners, friendly staff and glorious garden grounds made for an unforgettable stay.
You’ll love the location which puts you in the center on the island close to all the amazing activities and areas to explore. We must mention the restaurant which blew our minds. They serve fresh garden greens, tender beef from their own herd, homemade jams and delicious condiments.
We absolutely loved our stay and cannot wait to return to Dear Furnas Lake Living.

We absolutely loved our stay here. We were made to feel incredibly welcome. The hotel helped us with a list of places of where to get our Covid tests, made local dinner reservations and provided us with a breakfast basket when leaving early one morning. The breakfasts were also delicious. It is a beautiful setting with wonderful staff.

We stayed one week 2 adults, 2 children in number 02. We found the place amazing. Clean rooms. Nice pool. Friendly staff. You do need a car, but that goes everywhere on Sao Miguel. Restaurant food was really nice, but menu does not change within the week, so it does not make sense to eat every night. Breakfast was really good albeit sligthly expensive some would say, but quality is also very high. The place is from 2004 or 2005 I believe we where told, but the rooms look nice - but of course not brand new.
We had an excellent stay, and would return if we ever go back to the Azores.

A very bad experience. arrival at 8:30 p.m., it is not possible to go to the restaurant, you must reserve, even if there is space… we invite you to go into town. The bungalows are clean but without any character. At night, be careful, the living room veranda opens directly onto a one-meter gap on a pond 😅 lunch from 8:30 a.m. so don't leave too early if you're moving. The only positive point is the surprise of finding a meal tray when returning at night. The value for money is bad… I don’t recommend it

You know you’re in trouble when the host boasts that the bartender is supposedly rated in the top 10 in Portugal as soon as you sit down and then he doesn’t know how to make a basic drink. The dining room decor is appealing but the food was bland and we left hungry. We also said in advance one member of our party was gluten free and almost all the food contained bread. The appetizer was inedible. Not worth the drive out of tone or the expense. The people who run this place should focus more on the actual dining experience than telling you how good they think they are.

Myself (28) and my Dad stayed for 2 nights towards the end of our week on Sao Miguel. The location is incredible, a short walk from the lake, in the forrest and the grounds are filled with their own vegetable garden and animals. Our rooms were spacious, clean and had fantastic views. The owners and staff were incredibly kind and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The final shout out would be for the evening meal, which truly was delicious. I couldn't recommend more :)

This hotel is located in the woods and best for chilling. The breakfast is very good, only locally produced or homemade products are offered. Especially the homemade bread tastes extraordinary good. All the service people are very friendly and try to fulfill your wishes before you ask. When arriving there at 10 pm (caused by late flight and long waiting at car rental) we got a very informative overview about Sao Miguel: what to see, where to go and even advisable restaurants.
