Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favourite
We were very pleased with this hotel. Updated and comfortable rooms. The garden grounds are outstanding and access to the gardens and spa at night was a highlight. Both dinners were extremely good food with old school service and decor. Fresh squeezed orange juice among other pleasant breakfast options. Highly recommended.

1. There aren't enough irons in the hotel (I requested an iron three times and in the end had to use the pressing service (although this was initially provided complimentary). It might be better to just buy an iron locally.
2. There's no hair conditioner in the bathrooms (we had to buy conditioner outside of the hotel).
3. Breakfast was hit and miss and inconsistent. We were vegetarian throughout our stay but kept getting meat dishes given to us (from the same wait staff). You need to be very clear at each meal of you're vegetarian.
4. Breakfast staff were overwhelmed at times and tables were complaining. We had a few occasions where our order was misunderstood.
5. Both rooms we stayed in had safes that weren't working on arrival. One needed batteries replacing the other needed a complete replacement.
6. Parking outside was difficult at times (not enough spaces).
7. The hotel is missing modern day apps on the TV's such as 'Netflix'. I had to buy a HDMI cable to get access to entertainment from my laptop.
8. They ask you as hotel guests to segment types of waste in the room bins (e.g paper, glass) but the maids seemed to be putting them all in one bin sack.
9. The spa indoor pool isn't heated and too cold.
Plenty of good things about the hotel and overall our stay was excellent but these are the things you should be aware of.

The rooms were large and very clean. There is so much food at breakfast you won’t need to eat all day. Hotel guests have 24 hour access to the gardens and Hot Springs. Once the gardens close to the public around 5 PM you have the whole place to yourself. The hot springs are wonderful and the staff are very helpful and nice. Staff were constantly cleaning all public spaces with alcohol. Highly recommend.
DO NOT RECOMMEND the services at the hotel spa. My friend and I asked to book a one hour foot massage. The cost was $55 plus tip for 50 minutes . We went in together. First was a sugar scrub on lower legs and feet which was nice but it was all downhill from there. Then applied some kind of mud to the lower legs and feet, wrapped them in plastic and then left the room for 10 minutes. By the time they returned we were 30 minutes into our 50 minute session. Still no foot massage! I then asked if they could please massage our feet now. My girl said “oh yes the massage will start now”. She then took a washrag and wiped all of the mud off which was like getting a sponge bath in the hospital. Still no massage. She then applied oil to the lower legs and feet. And I say applied because it was really no massage and she barely touched my feet other than doing some weird pressure point thing! I could see that the girl that my friend had did a slightly better job. We both left there disappointed and annoyed. I’ve had a better foot massage at a nail salon!

Dear Barbara, We would like to inform you that your comment deserved our best attention. We are very happy to know that our thermal waters and the friendliness of our staff were factors that marked your stay. However, we are sorry to hear that the massage you had in our SPA did not meet your expectations. As a rule, our procedure is to make a brief explanation to our clients before starting the treatment about what they will be doing and in this case, the information may not have been passed in the most explicit way. In the case of the Spa Foot Treatment, it is a type of treatment that combines several steps, so the treatment is not focused entirely on a foot massage, but also on a process of exfoliation, hydration and massage at the end of the treatment. As for the 10-minute wait during the treatment, this is indeed a fact, which we deeply regret. The suggestions of those who visit us are always opportunities for improvement and this is how we see them. Once again, we regret what happened and hope to have the pleasure to welcome you back to Terra Nostra Garden Hotel in the near future. Best regards, Sofia Grilo Guest Experience Manager

We stayed at the Terra Nostra for 7 nights and the first part of our vacation was beautiful. We enjoyed the garden, the hot springs and the nature around furnas and had a wonderful few days.
However at the second half of our stay there was some kind of party going on in the village and the event location was right next to the hotel. On the first night of this festival, the „music“ (it was more like disco sounds) was playing from 7 in the evening until 4 o’clock in the morning. Not only could we not enjoy the park during this time, we also couldn‘t sleep at all until after the noise had stopped. Even though we were in our room with closed windows we could hear the music so loud that we understood the exact lyrics. The next morning we asked at the reception for information. They provided us with some earplugs but weren‘t eager to help more. Then in the afternoon the noise went on with someone practising the drums. I booked a massage for that day in the hope to at least relax a little bit, but even in the massage room i could hear the sounds. The second night the music started at nine o‘clock in the evening and went on until after 4 o‘clock. At this time i was personally stressed out to a maximum and even after a few hours of sleep in the early morning i was feeling quite unwell. Because of this we weren‘t able to make a big hike as we planned, so the results after two nights of no sleep affected us of course also during the days and our activities.
Of course we mentioned our complaint at the check out, but we were disappointed again, when we saw how poorly our situation was handled. The hotel staff blamed it all on the event location and told us, that it has nothing to do with them, so they can‘t do anything about it. Of course we realise, that the hotel per se isn‘t in charge of what goes on in the village. However they should be able to provide rooms with reasonable sound proofing and information about such large events beforehead so we can cancel at the time or rearrange our stay to another week. We searched the internet on our own to hope to find some information about the event but couldn‘t find anything at all, so we wouldn‘t even be able to prepare for such an issue on our own.
What disappoints us the most is, that we on purpose looked for a very nice hotel with a high star rating in a quiet relaxing place. The Terra Nostra would have been the perfect fit, but we ended our vacation more stressed out than we arrived and we spent a lot of money on it, that we saved up for a long time. We can recommend the hotel for the features as the park, the hot springs and the very friendly staff in the bar and the restaurant. Apart from that we were very sad to realise that the staff at the reception made it quite convenient for themselves and didn‘t seem to care at all about the situation. We received a very small discount on the two nights that were disturbed but compared to the amount of money we spent and the immense stress and general affect it had on us, it‘s laughable.

Wow !!! What an incredible place . The outdoor botanical gardens , and the hot springs are what really make this place special , as few hotels have access to such beautiful outdoor spaces, bird song everywhere. The service is excellent and the outdoor bar area was our favourite as you overlook the gardens . Top tip - if you try the iron rich large outdoor pool ensure you shower as soon a possible afterwards as it can slightly stain your skin ( think spray tan ) . Alternatively use the jacuzzi area in the garden which are basically clean water springs hidden amongst the trees and are simply stunning . Best of all we often had it all to ourselves and you have access 24/7 , so can avoid the bus loads of visitors . We really loved the area and it was a great base for exploring g the east of the island . We could t work out why we didnt see the parrots ( but could hear them) then we worked out it was the frogs in the garden pools 😃.

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. It's a well-managed property. The staff was professional and warm.
We had a garden access room which is smaller than I anticipated but very clean, modern, and functional.
The location is in the center of the town which is very convenient to dining places and attractions, but at the same time felt remote as you are surrounded by beautiful nature.
The thermal pool is such a treat to come back to at the end of the day's activities and hike. The pool is popular with visitors and packed during the day. However, it is exclusive for guests use only before 10:00 am and after 5:00. Same with the garden, it is a very peaceful and beautiful place to walk around before and after the day trippers' tour.
The spa was amazing. My husband and I both had a heavenly massage. Too bad we could only get a 50-minute appointment. Make sure to reserve in advance.
There is a very nice breakfast buffet at the main restaurant, the TN. We had the famous Cazido das Furnas (the stew cooked underground) in this restaurant. (It would be more enjoyable if you can witness the cooking
of the cazido near the hot springs. Front desk would be happy to arrange for you to get there.) Service was great. The wine list is very good.
There is a more casual bar restaurant with outdoor seating that serve light meals. It's a nice place to hang out for a nightcap and live music (Although we did not enjoy the female singer the first two nights. On the second night, she made her children sing and it turned out like a family karaoke night.:( )
All in all, we would recommend this hotel and we would stay here again.

This was a once in a lifetime experience on many levels. My grandfather was from Furnas, and the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel made me feel like I was coming home. The rooms are beautiful throughout the hotel - we stayed in three because of travel drama on our end and the wonderful flexibility of the hotel staff. Breakfast is a religious experience that will spoil you for breakfast anywhere else. The gardens and the hot sprints will revive your body and soul. A pre-dinner cocktail on the deck is essential, and I can't say enough about the Furnas Hot Springs drink. But above it all is the staff, every one of them gracious and graceful, eager to accommodate and so interested in their guests having an excellent experience. As our tour leader told them when we checked out, they've set a standard for hiring, training, and managing hospitality staff. We will be back for sure!

Beautiful hotel, in beautiful gardens in a beautiful area. We stayed for 6 nights. Breakfast served at the table kept you going all day, with a range of choices, by polite charming staff. Room was clean with views over the garden, there was an inside pool which was "refreshing" but not needed with warm thermal pools/jacuzzi to use whenever you wanted. In the evening or early morning we were often the only people there. To see tropical foliage, bats, birds while soaking in the warm water was bliss. Plenty of walks nearby. We did tend to eat out, mainly to give some variety, and because vegetarian options were quite limited at the hotel. For us, the only thing missing was a kettle/fridge in the room for an early morning cup of coffee, but perhaps this was removed due to covid reasons. Otherwise perfect

Terra Nostra is a lovely hotel in the center of town. Parking was on site and we had no issues. The town is a little confusing with a mesh of one way streets so GPS is helpful. The daily breakfast was waiter services with a daily variety of eggs, fruit and other choices. We had diner in the hotel one night, first rate, all be it on the higher end price wise. We ate in town the other nights for some variety.
We had a garden room which was quiet and well appointed. The beds were firm but comfortable, normal from our experience in the Azores. Our travel mates had an accessible room (not requested) which had a bit of an awkward shower arrangement that made it impossible not to flood the bathroom when showering (room 103). Floor 1 of the garden wing (second floor to Americans) was level with the roof top patio so most rooms open up to a large deck. If you want a private terrace, request room on floors 2 or 3 (room numbers 2xx and 3xx ). The elevators are small and can get busy so our rooms allowed us a quick a single flight of stairs to enter and exit.
The hotel lounge area was a nice spot for afternoon snacks or a drink, with indoor and outdoor spaces. The massage one of us had at the spa was enjoyed, but appointments were limited.
As others have mentioned, the adjoining park is spectacular and hotel guest get early and late access. Take advantage of this privilege as the park and pools can become quite full during general operation hours.

This hotel was wonderful. No complaints. The food and service was great in both the restaurant and the bar. The facilities were modern and clean. The room was very nice with a balcony overlooking the hotel's massive botanical garden. The bed was very comfortable. The two geothermal heated pools in the botanical garden were great. The hotel guest have unlimited access to them included in the hotel fare. I loved going in the early morning and late afternoons/evenings after all the non-hotel crowds had left the botanical garden. There is free parking. However, it does fill up by the evening so it is best to grab a spot in the early to late afternoon.

I cannot recall from our time there, but their team was VERY responsive to email prior to our visit, I would suggest emailing them!
We were there last September so it may have changed a bit. Basically they are doing a lot outside but it does not effect your stay in reality. The thermal pool, indoor pool are fully open and the gardens are 90% open. The hotel and grounds are such a great place to stay that I woudl still go ahead with the stay if i were you and pretty certain they said it woudl be complete by this spring anyway.
You would need a passport to do that.

Unfortunately, the island does not provide public transport convenient for tourists. However, staying in the town you can explore the town itself by foot. There is enough attractions for 2-3 days or more if you like hot springs pools and walking around the lake. But the island has many places you can reach only by car or tour bus. Not sure if the hotel organise the trips but maybe they can contact to tour agency.
