Nestled in a stunning location, Occidental Eden Beruwala is lauded for its beach proximity and variety of amenities, including a praised pool, spa, and dining options. While the welcoming atmosphere is generally admired, an update in music selection could enhance the ambiance. The hotel's cleanliness and service receive high marks, with travelers noting exceptionally maintained rooms and grounds, along with professional staff. However, guests have called out the high cost of on-site refreshments and some room inconsistencies.

The Eden Hotel was just as beautiful as the pictures show. From the minute I arrived the staff couldn't do enough to make my stay enjoyable and comfortable, with Shavzi in particular helping me.

I arrived at around midday after travelling for over 13 hours so they made sure I had a room made available to me before the official check in time, which I was most grateful for. The room itself opened right onto the pool area and was extremely spacious with a large bathroom with an excellent rainfall shower. The enormous bed was very comfortable. My room was cleaned daily to a very high standard by Ashen.

The pool area was immaculate and very well tended. The pool itself is quite shallow (no more than about 4 foot or so at it's deepest) but this works brilliantly as you can still swim, or just sit and lounge in the water, with the benefit that it was very safe for children as not too deep.

The pool bar was staffed by truly lovely staff, I was particularly fond of Sudhara who could not have done any more to look after me. In fact, all the staff in both bars and the restaurant were attentive, remembered your preferences and were always smiling.

The food was of a high standard too, with a wide selection of international dishes and Sri Lankan food on offer. I was particularly fond of the breakfast egg hoppers made by a delightful, smiling lady (whose name escapes me!). She let me watch and learn and even gave me her recipe to try at home.

I travelled just before the start of the season, so the sea just outside the gate wasn't suitable for swimming, but I was aware of this before I travelled. In fact, I was able to wander and splash in the sea far more than I anticipated I would be able to, so this was a bonus. The beach is beautiful, with soft sand fringed with palm trees and only a few steps from the pool area.

Sri Lanka itself is well worth a visit and the hotel only added to the fantastic experience that I had in this stunning and interesting country.

We stayed at the Eden Beruwala from 7-17 June which was out of season for Sri Lanka. However, this only added to our enjoyment of the hotel as we didn't have to deal with queues in the restaurant or fight for sun loungers. The hotel is beautifully maintained, as are the grounds. The staff are friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We had deluxe rooms with a pool and sea view. The rooms were spacious, clean and had all the facilities you would expect from a 4 star hotel - air conditioning, room safe, bathroom facilities, plenty of storage, tea/coffee making facilities and fridge. Iron and ironing board and hairdryers are not in the rooms routinely, but we requested these from reception and they were delivered straight away and remained in our room for the duration of our stay. The pool area and gardens are well maintained and there are lots of chipmonks and a couple of resident monitor lizzards just roaming around. I loved having the chipmonks come and feed from the peanuts I bought them. There is direct access to a lovely beach and there is a cool little beach bar a 2 minute walk along the beach. The buffet breakfast was brilliant! if you are hoping to try some local food then you won't be disappointed. There were a selection of curries, rice, hoppers, dosas etc available every day, alongside the usual continental options, cheese, meats, egg station, waffles, pancakes, fruit, salad etc. There was also a good selection of tea, coffee, juices and milkshakes. The restaurant is lovely and airy and very clean. We were only bed and breakfast so cannot comment on the lunch and dinner options. There is a sports bar with a pool table and TVs, but beware the price of drinks is much more expensive than anywhere local (as much as double the price). This is a shame as we would have liked to perhaps stay in the hotel on at least one occasion. Food is also available in the sports bar and the very nice pool bar, which also has a swim up bar. As it was out of season and the hotel was not very full, there were no other dining options such as a la carte. If I had any criticisms it would be that it would be nice to have some music in the pool area, which only happened very occasionally, but this might have been because the hotel was so under-occupied. I would definitely return to this hotel as we had an amazing stay. We travelled as a couple with our 22 year old daughter.

Dear Charlotte, Firstly, we would like to thank you for the lovely review you shared following your recent visit to our hotel, and we are delighted to read that we were able to match your holiday expectations. It is wonderful that you had such a great experience at Occidental Eden Beruwala, A Member Of Barcelo Hotel Group. However, we are sorry that your stay did not fully meet your expectations. While our drink pricing at the sports bar is designed to reflect the premium service and environment we provide, we understand that it can be a concern and we are continually reviewing our pricing to ensure it offers value. Moreover, we are considering more dining options during the off-season to enhance our guests' culinary experiences. Finally, we appreciate your suggestion regarding music in the pool area and are exploring ways to consistently incorporate ambient music that enhances our guests' relaxation. We are delighted that you enjoyed the well-maintained hotel and grounds, and the friendly and helpful staff. It is great that you loved the wildlife, direct beach access, and our extensive buffet breakfast. The room features such as air conditioning, a room safe, and the quick provision of additional amenities like an iron and hairdryer also contributed to your comfortable stay. Finally, the location's convenience and the overall atmosphere seem to have left a positive impression. We look forward to welcoming you back on a future occasion. Best regards, The Management, Occidental Eden Beruwala

Very great hotel with a very top location right on the sea.
Room has a sufficient size and was meticulously cleaned daily. Also, our minibar was replenished daily with fresh free drinking water and also with the free offered soluble coffee. Our balcony was rear-facing and could be designed a little more lovingly and also better separated from the neighbors. The big drawback here was the air conditioning house, which sounded you with noise all day. However, we are not sensitive to noise and therefore had not complained about this.
The food was very varied and also gave you an insight into the local cuisine. The staff (cleaning, pool loungers, pool bar, garden maintenance, kitchen and service staff) were very helpful and extremely friendly. Special thanks go to Rohana Pkumara, who served us excellently and always had nice words as well as great excursion tips for us.
We would definitely come back.

Breakfast - a very few and poorly prepared international food items were on the buffet. Hence, my husband hardly enjoyed the breakfast. Regarding LIVE cooking station there were long queues since only 1 staff on each was preparing. Though many management/supervisors going around yet did not pay attention for it and resolve the problem.
Pool - on our last day there was extremely high music played just on the edge of Pool Bar towards the pool.
Room - there were some toiletries missing so we had to request.
Dinner in A-la-carte restaurant - my husband ordered Pork Chops, and he received a pork chop not only thinker than 0.2 centimeter but 80% of it was full of bones and fat. He shown that to the waiter & supervisor. They seen it and offered another one, but my husband refused. Then when the bill presented, they did not remove it, then my husband asked do I have to pay for 20% meat & for tiny bit of vegetables?? Then only they said we will remove the item from the bill.

When we reserved it was mentioned on the Booking.com that late check-out is possible if rooms available. When we were there, we were told by staff only 60% occupied since it was "off season" in that area.
Since we were coming to Colombo for another few day’s holiday we wanted to spend bit more time in the Pool, so requested a late check-out, just 2 hrs. more.
Receptionist we asked about it said he will come back to us since the Manager is having his meal at that time, and he is only one know rooms allocation (a strange comment?). We told him we are going to the Pool now (it was around 10:30 hrs.) still he said he will find us & inform. He never turned up, then 30 mts. before normal check-out time i.e. 12:00 I walked to the Reception with bathing cloths to find him to understand whether we can or cannot. He was not there, and another receptionist said the hotel is fully booked, so we have to check-out at 12:00 hrs. That time we had only 20 mts. left to go to the room, have shower, pack & leave the room. While we were rushing in the room another Receptionist called 5 mts. before 12:00 & said we have to check-out at 12:00 hrs. We said that is what we are trying.
We were very disappointed & annoyed that the 1st Receptionist who we talked did not bother to inform us in advance it is not possible to late check-out (though half of the hotel was empty), but was very much busy in rushing us out from the room.

Dear Guest, We truly appreciate your comments. Guest feedback is very important to us because it is the best way to know how we should focus our efforts for continuous improvement. We apologize for certain aspects of your stay falling short of your expectations. We understand that an enriching dining experience is a crucial part of any stay, and it is regrettable that our breakfast selection and the wait at the live cooking stations did not meet your satisfaction. We value the importance of a serene environment, and we are sorry that the music at the pool was not to your preference. Moreover, we regret the oversight in room amenities and assure you that we aim to provide a complete in-room experience. Regarding the dinner experience, it is disappointing to learn that the dish served did not meet our usual high culinary standards. We appreciate that you brought this to our team's attention, and we will use your feedback as an opportunity to improve. Furthermore, we strive to communicate clearly with our guests regarding services such as late check-out, and it seems we have faltered in this instance. We are reviewing our front desk operations to enhance our communication and service delivery. Nonetheless, we take pride in our picturesque beachfront location at Moragolla, Beruwala, offering guests a tranquil escape with stunning ocean views. Our hotel is perfectly situated for those wishing to explore local attractions, such as Brief Garden and the Bentota River, or simply to relax on the beautiful Beruwala Beach. We are hoping to welcome you back in the future. All the best. The Management, Occidental Eden Beruwala

We’ve been to this hotel before and put off coming back for a while as we had a great time before with our family and didn’t want to lose that memory. Last time had a great room overlooking the sea. This time I chose garden view but that is not what we got! I booked the trip in January so I do not know why we were given the worst room in the hotel overlooking a concrete roof and service area of hotel. Our hearts sank. We were told the hotel was fully booked but later found out that some other guests that arrived same day but later than us managed to move to a different room. The hotel was mainly full with locals.
The locals left after the weekend and this is when we were able to move to a room with a balcony. This room had a run down bathroom with peeling chrome, leaking toilet and a mouldy shower curtain. In the previous room the air con unit was leaking and I slipped over as there was a big puddle on the floor.

The food was of a very good standard while the locals were there but when they left the standard dropped massively . I understand not as many dishes can be prepared for less guests but the standard should not drop. No longer were there tasty fried prawns or nasi goreng. Even the chicken curry disappeared. .
We did not enjoy a single meal after the locals left, just ate to fill our stomaches.

I booked a pedicure and was told they don’t have machine for gel nails but can do varnish which was fine I said. I was shown into a room with all the nail colours laid out. My feet were put in a bowl of cold water . The lady quickly gave a get a run over with an emery board. Didn’t get rid of dry skin at all. Then a quick application of oil no massage. I was then given a clear coat of varnish an told it was finished. I stated I wanted a colour but was told the varnish was old and no good. Another disappointment as I had stated before hand that I wanted varnish. My husband returned to the spa to check the price list. Then the lady approached us to say she would now give me a colour??? I wished I had refused to pay because it just wasn’t good enough.

The staff in hotel are wonderful. So keen to please. That’s the only positive I can say.

This is NOT a five star hotel by any means.

Brief description:
- Condition of room is hazardous to health
- everything is wet/damp, mold is visible and clearly smellable
- air conditioning is moldy and spreads the smell of mold throughout the room
- air conditioning is dripping

Everything is wet and smells of mold. The room is also not in the best condition. When we complained, we were shown FOUR different rooms as an option to swap. The hotel management would have given us a free upgrade to the next room category (renovated). However, all rooms had the same problem. Some even had obvious large black mold stains. A "cleaning" was offered, whereupon we had to explain that only a renovation or refurbishment would help and not a simple room cleaning. The manager's reasoning was that "asthma patients could get a room without wallpaper," although even in the white-painted room it was clear that mold stains were simply painted over with paint.
The air conditioning only improves the problem to a limited extent. It also smells of mold and it is obvious that the spores are being spread through it. In addition, it drips onto the floor of the room when used.
You feel like you're sitting in a wet, clammy bed.
We asked to leave the hotel and get our money back. As the hotel was booked through TUI, this was unfortunately not possible. We decided to stay in our room and the manager offered us an upgrade to half board.
After one night in the hotel, the mood was unfortunately more than low, everyone woke up with a headache and the holiday was ruined. We've never had such a bad hotel on our tour of Sri Lanka.

The best part of this hotel are the grounds. They obviously take great care with the plants, the floors are polished multiple times a week. There are no stray dogs or annoying crows or aggressive squirrels to ruin your time at the pool/beach. But that also about where the justification for the high price ends.

The rooms are small. We had booked a triple for two adults and a child and they first tried to pass off a double room. They fixed the mistake when we complained but at this price, it just should not have happened.

The bathroom is mostly clean, but goodness, the fixtures are totally disgusting. We even tipped the cleaners extra to clean the fixtures properly and they did not.

The food is ok - if you don’t count the day they served raw chicken skewers off the grill. The buffets are extremely repetitive , last nights dinner rolls are served for breakfast the next morning so…. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It was not worth the price we paid and I don’t think I would go again.

The service was good, but honestly, I have never been to a beach resort in Sri Lanka with bad service.

We are sorry that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. While we are glad you found our grounds well-maintained, we regret to hear about your concerns regarding room allocation. We chose this hotel after a 14-day round trip.

We were warmly welcomed and got a very nice room (it looks newly renovated), likewise we were asked several times if everything is OK with the room.
The food is good and adequate, but it could be a bit more varied (at least in a 5* hotel). We have compared to 9 previous hotels.

The staff, like pretty much everyone in Sri Lanka, are very friendly and accommodating.
I would especially like to praise Maduranga from Housekeeping.
He immediately brought a new hairdryer because the existing one did not work, even when the room card did not go, he was immediately on his way to reception and took care of it and the room is excellently clean, it is always everything available.

Loungers are adequate, only unfortunately few umbrellas.

Drink prices are quite high, in previous hotels they were available for half price and less.

The beach is clean.
Tuk-tuks are just around the corner and the small town can be reached on foot in just over 20 minutes.

Overall, this hotel is a good choice.

First, answer yourself the question: what is Sri Lanka like? Only after you have formed a general impression of the country will you be able to adequately assess the level of the hotel. There is no point in comparing with your previous experience in other countries. Last year we were at the Sheraton Kosgoda, one of the best hotels on this coast. Its advantages are that it is new. From this point of view, the common areas at the Sheraton look preferable, but the cleanliness leaves much to be desired despite the newness of the hotel. The staff generally don’t understand what is clean and what is dirty; it takes a long time to explain. In Eden, communication is much better. The hotel is restyled, it was renovated six months ago, so it looks decent. Not what we are used to in Southeast Asia, but for the price we paid we are very pleased. The customer service manager turned over herself three times, but did everything for us to make us happy, moving us to an upgraded room, even though we didn’t ask for it. All our wishes were fulfilled, all complaints were responded to immediately. Thank you, Janenie! The food is quite decent, we lived for a month, of course, we were a little tired, but still, even despite such a long period of time, we ate every day. We didn’t take dinners, since we preferred different places every day, plus we missed many nights due to traveling deep into the island, so there was no reason to overpay for missed dinners. The room is decent, it has its own characteristics, but I repeat once again: for this price everything is adequate. Keep in mind one feature: the hotel is located at the confluence of the river and the ocean, during the rainy season and a month after, until all the water from the mountains descends into the ocean, the coastal part is a river, not an ocean. For us, this was the most critical drawback of the hotel. We only swam at other beaches. But the picturesqueness of Eden Beach is impressive, visually it is one of the best. If you prefer the pool, you won't notice any drawbacks.

You can get a taxi or a tuktuk from the hotel to go to places. There are shops but it’s a long walk if the weather is hot. Use the grab app - the tuktuks charge tourists a lot, if you do use a tuktuk settle on a price beforehand. We mostly ate at the hotel as the buffet was absolutely delicious every day.
