However, it's important to know since sometime late 2011 or early 2012, the Bann Panwa Resort & Spa has changed ownership and is no longer a hotel. It's now Bhavana Phuket Residential Addiction Treatment Center. I have no idea what their treatment programs cost, but they deal with drug addiction, alcohol addiction and offer a number of rehabilitation and detox programs.
My rating on this page is for what we experienced when the location was Baan Panwa Resort & Spa.
Breakfast was poor as the fried eggs were under cooked and cold.
It's a shame because it is in a nice setting and the room, when I eventually got to stay there, I have no complaints about. Only the fact that I hadn't had the full 3 nights there which I paid for.
If you're looking to swim at the beach there, you can't, as this is mangrove territory.
On top of everything else, the “resort” is miles from anything else so expect to pay 300-500 baht to get a taxi to the nearest attraction.
The pool was nice...
Don’t let them run this scam anymore!
The picture is of their fitness room...
1. Room - 5/5. Very spacious, clean. Each room has a small backyard.
2. Pool and Surroundings - 5/5. It's clean and big in size. You can't see the ocean from pool. Location of breakfast area is fantastic. You can see calm green water while having breakfast. Go for Canoeing around mangrove forest. You will enjoy that.
3. Restaurant - 3.5/5. They don't have full fledged lunch/dinner arrangement. But it remains open till 5pm and server different type of snacks. They have very limited menu. But you can visit restaurant of Mangrove Resort just over the fence for lunch an dinner.
4. Behavior - 5/5.
5. Location - 5/5. For me it's best as no shop nearby. For people who want to shop little bit, or buy some local fruits, etc then it would be tough. You have to walk a lot.
The hotel itself looks ok, but the SMELL is terrible. It smells like sewer one second and the next the smell is old garbage. Maybe it was just where our room was. The walls are made of paper so you hear your neighbor fart. But the rooms very clean.
Food is ok and cheap. The bar closes 10PM so if you want a beer after that fill up your refrigerator. The word "finished" was often used in the restaurant. The staff was still very friendly both in the restaurant and the reception.
The beach is not a swim beach so we did not swim there. The pool area is nice but the water was really dirty and slimy. There was a few men working on it so it was probably broken.
A rich english person owns a villa close to the hotel. He has at least 3 guardian dogs who may attack you. On our stay several people where attacked by the dogs or chased by them. So don't let your children run alone one the beach if the neighbor is home.
So my conclusion is that I could stay at Baan Panwa for a few nights as a pitstop place. Nothing more than that.
Although that negative review was accurate, I think it was a bit unfair. Here's some comments on that review:
** The restaurant didn't have dinners, and the staff also recommended that we go to the hotel next door. Which we did. And loved! The restaurant/bar next door (about 2 minutes walk) was high quality, friendly, and not expensive.
** The fitness room was an embarrassment --- the fitness bike was gone by the time we stayed, so there was literally nothing in the fitness room.
** I don't know what the bathhouse referred to in that review was, but I did see an outdoor corridor of what might be showers and changing rooms. They did look a bit depressing, but we had no need to use them.
** The beach is a mangrove, but it is quite possible to walk along the beach, paddle, and even swim. We used the complimentary kayaks to explore a bit further out, and loved it.
** We initially had two "standard" rooms, which were perfectly clean. Actually, we liked them very much. Being outdoors, though, there were naturally some insects and small creatures, which led to us changing one room for one of their "superior" rooms. They changed this room for us for free (just for one night, but still, very kind of them). The superior room was significantly nicer, and we really appreciated this action by the staff.
** It is quite far from most things (apart from the hotel next door). I used their complimentary bicycle to explore a little --- there is a market, village, shop, etc. within about a 10-minute cycle. I got everything we needed there. I agree with the other review that it is far from Phuket town, and many other attractions ... but I think that was the point. We wanted to stay here to be away from everything else.
** The (outdoor) was indeed lovely!
Overall, as long as you know what you're looking for, I would actually strongly recommend considering here (though don't expect much in the exercise room).
