Situated just 160km north of the city of Durban is a living momument to Zulu culture. It is from here that people from all over the world come to experience the lifestyles, social systems and rich culture of the Zulu nation.

On a cool & drizzly day, we arrived in Shakaland. Some giraffe were posing amongst the Euphorbias on the adjacent property, so we were already happy.. On checking in, Nonhlahla looked at my wife's Zulu bangles and immediately asked whether they could dance together that night. Upon hearing that my wife is sick, she bid us to wait a second,... To learn more about the history of the great Zulu tribe and to immerse yourself in the tribal culture and lore, a visit to Shakaland is a definite must!! Our guide, Slende, was not only very knowledgeable, but entertaining in her dialogue. But her greatest asset is her dancing! The last part of the tour is in the great rondovel,... More

The rooms were set out like a native ‘village’. [complete with hot water, TV’s etc.] The dinner was poor and the worst we had on our SA tour. There was a very good show put on in the evening by the Zulus. Breakfast was very basic.

This was our second visit to Shakaland. We first visited with a group of international guests who'd traveled to SA for our wedding in 2002, and returned this year for my 12-year old son to have the opportunity to learn a little about Zulu culture. It is a tourist-oriented place, but offers some great insights into how many Zulu people... More

Never stayed here but came for the tour. Thought it was fantastic and the guide was brilliant. Very informative but not in a boring way, was information you'd enjoy hearing about. The dancing and music was nice to see. The beer that you get to taste is not to everyone's taste

This place is very unusual. The whole place is set out like a zulu village and the cultural show shortly after arrival is worth seeing. Accommodation is in individual huts similar to a zulu kraal. Our hut was no 32 and had twin beds, a desk & chair and an OTB shower. It was novel and unusual but not unpleasant... More

Oh dear, this was a great disappointment. 1st, our GPS couldn't find this place, so we had to call & get directions, that weren't very accurate. 2nd - we arrived to this hotel around 4pm. A giggling girl was half sitting half lying in the reception area. We checked in and were taken to a room, which was very basic,... More

“The rooms were dirty and dusty and only cleaned on the surface. Don't even think of picking up those slippery carpets in the room as you will be met with a pile of dust. The hairdryer was illegally (and highly dangerously) connected to the shaver socket in the bathroom. Are these people trying to kill you? If is it not loose mats, or raw chicken then it is unsafe electrical connections. Will I ever return: NEVER. Would I recommend the place: NEVER. Would they still remain a 3 star establishment within a couple of months: I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT. With the current condition of the place, cleanliness, food and entertainment, I would not even give them half a star. Being from Cape Town, we have been travelling all over KZN for 14 days staying in 3 star establishments all over and this was the worst experience BY FAR!”
