Nestled into a hidden ridge in the shadow of the sacred Nanda Devi Range, The Kumaon offers a private mountain retreat situated in the heart of nature. The Kumaon is located in Kasar Devi, a ridge above the historical city of Almora, which has attracted artists, pilgrims, scholars and seekers for centuries — Swami Vivekananda, DH Lawrence, Timothy Leary and Bob Dylan, to name but a few. The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is a short 15 minute drive from the property. Jageshwar, an ancient and revered temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva, is an hour's drive away. The Katarmal Surya Mandir, one of only three extant temples dedicated to the Sun, is located 30 mins away by car. Guests can walk through hamlets practising traditional agriculture; descend through forests of Oak, Cedar and Rhododendron to these ancient stone temples, or simply relax in the mountain sunshine and clean air, surrounded by birdsong and the fragrant smell of pine.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed at The Kumaon 6 months into the covid lockdown and this break was most desperately needed for us. Kumaon maintained full proof hygiene and safety standards against Covid and all guests were only permitted with Covid negative reports. The staff was highly flexible to serve our needs right within the room if we wanted to avoid common areas.
The property is ofcourse beautiful, quite luxurious for a mountain property standard and very boutiquish which we loved about it. They have most spectacular Himalayan view from each chalet and we could not help but extend our trip from 4 to 9 days. We could manage scenic walks around the property, visit to kasar Devi was almost a daily activity, Binsar wildlife sanctuary is an hour away and there is a lot more to do for those who wish to venture out. We loved our stay at the property so we stayed in mostly. Food is sumptuous and healthy ( they serve thalis with Indian food) so for those who are expecting multi cuisine, be weary of that. They also have extensive Kumaoni dishes on the platter which must be tried on. It gives you a very local food experience in a luxurious premise. The manager of the property, Rajat, is the go to guy for anything you need under the sun. He will ensure the you have the best time during your stay. He was kind enough to share his recipe for most delicious Banofie Pie that I have ever tried. This place will make you feel super welcomed and pampered. They truly have the best staff on floor who know the meaning of true hospitality. Thank you The Kumaon and we shall be visiting soon again.

We spent four pleasant days at The Kumaon in the middle of June 2022.
The property is beautifully located on a ridge with panoramic views of the hills and the Himalayas in the distance (visible on clear days). The view is framed by pine forests and a deep valley. We spent several peaceful hours enjoying the view from the communal terrace as well as the balcony space of our room.
The rooms are spare and functional with white concrete brick and pinewood floors - they direct attention to the vistas The doors to the balcony are framed by glass windows so the views can be enjoyed in bed as well. The balcony is spacious and we spotted many birds in the forest outside. Some outdoor furniture more comfortable than the metal chairs and tables provided would have been a nice touch.
The bathroom in our room showed some signs of wear on the sink and the counters. It is also not well ventilated – an unpleasant and foul odour lingered throughout our stay. The black tiles everywhere do not help and the overall effect is dark and dingy. An update to the bathrooms is essential whenever this property is renovated. Toiletries are excellent (a custom fragrance from Ayca) but were replenished irregularly.
The communal areas are compact but delightful. The library is stocked with an eclectic selection of books and invites relaxation and reflection. The lounge and terrace overlook the mountains and are perfect for leisurely cups of tea.
Where The Kumaon needs a complete rethink, in our opinion, is in the F&B department. Meals are repetitive and the execution of non-Indian dishes is decidedly amateurish. The kitchen will make some small changes to dishes on request and is happy to prepare plates of pasta for kids, but in general, food choices are limited. The set menu (Kumaoni thali) for dinner gets repetitive after a couple of days, and the breakfasts were a letdown as well. We did not buy the excuses offered for limited availability of ingredients, as Almora is not too far away, and we saw well-stocked markets on our drive through there. A bar cart is set up in the lounge in the evenings, which is a nice touch, but inexplicably, we were unable to get a beer throughout our stay.
We would like to acknowledge Mr. Anand at the restaurant who was a warm host for all our meals. Duty Manager Ms. Meenakshi helped us out with medication when one of us had a small injury and her attention to our comfort was much appreciated. We also enjoyed the unmissable rum chais offered by GM Sid who is a pleasant and gregarious host.
Bottom line: this is a beautiful property in a great location. A little more attention to the private spaces and a complete and focused revamp of F&B would elevate it from good to great.

My son and I stayed from March 18 to March 22. 2022
The property layout is extremely thoughtful with regard to privacy .All rooms face the snow capped Himalayan peaks and you can see peaks of Nanda Devi and others from your bed weather permitting. The rooms are well furnished, spacious and open from 3 sides in lush green lawns
The staff is largely local. They were extremely courteous and helpful - they looked after all our needs. We went for 3 treks with their guises who were extremely knowledgeable about the local fauna, culture and villages
There is no reception counter and you will be welcomed on arrival by the staff right from parking to lounge like a family relative
The food is delicious and sumptuous with great variety including local Kumaoni dishes served in style. The hotel has bonfire with live music sometimes. The icing on the cake was the hotel’s Holi celebration, which featured a riot of colours and dances
All in all, we had an incredible experience and would strongly recommend the property. We would encourage everyone to stay for at least 4/5 days to soak in the local environment, given the long and weary travel

Good Stuff:
The place has incredible views everywhere. It is situated in a very scenic spot. The rooms and bathrooms are designed very aesthetically, in minimalist style. The staff are polite and helpful. Cleanliness is top notch and the entire property is maintained very well.
Bad Stuff:
Every meal is a sad affair. There is neither quality nor choice. It feels less like a hotel and more like a hostel when it’s time to eat. They claim everything is simple and organic. But simple and organic should be delicious not dismal. Also organic places don’t serve canned sweets as dessert. I don’t blame the staff, they try their best. However it seems to be the hotel policy to heavily economise the meals. The chef probably has a 100 rupees budget for each meal. I had read some poor reviews about the food, but did not expect it to be this bad.
Conclusion:
If this hotel can fix its food situation, it has the potential to be the best in the region.

Authenticity of the place is unparalleled. If you have experienced this place, you have earned yourself bragging rights to be at one of the most serene places anyone will ever visit in their life.
Me and my wife spent 5 days at this place and we were amazed by the novelty we experienced throughout the stay. Here are some details:
(1) Once you find your room and witness the view, you will gasp with amazement. No pictures on these reviews (however awesome they look) can ever justify the sight that awaits you.
(2) The food on offer will compel you to detox. It’s simple, it has variety and it will remind you of the many tastes you may have forgotten. Rajat (F&B manager) has the choicest of the recipes and can surprise you with off the menu items on special request (Sorry man, if I just increased your workload :)).
(3) The jungle trails should not be missed. They are informative, challenging and a treasure trove for out of the world Instagram pics. Nandu (The Kumaon’s official guide) will make sure you are transformed into a flora / fauna expert for the region and above all make sure that you are safe. I would leave it to you to discover the high one feels after you have completed the trail - it is magical.
As is the case with any place, there is a specific mood which goes very well with this place. That mood is relaxed, reflective, adventurous, curious and experimental. If that’s what you are looking for from your next vacation, The Kumaon is the ideal destination.

My husband and I went here for a 3 night getaway in mid-April. It is definitely one of the most unique places I have been to with magical views and locals as service staff- super prompt and ready to go beyond throughout. Special mention of Sid, Pushkar, Meenakshi and Suraj who went beyond to ensure we go back with some great memories :)
However, would like to point out that the food definitely needs some thought and improvement to make it taste like holiday food! We were left wanting after every meal ( in taste and quantity) and owing to remote location, we do not have a choice but to eat at the resort itself. However, Sid and the chef did take feedback well and I am sure they would take the requisite actions soon. Secondly, the extras (alcohol, excursions in particular) were very pricey for what they were - I could see that guests could feel cheated on this. Further, the mornings and afternoons get quite warm and the rooms do not have ACs and refrigerators.
Overall, would recommend for the warmth and hospitality of the staff and breathtaking views.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Kumaon. It was the highlight of our India journey - the staff was so friendly, they helped us with all our requests incl. bookings of trains and drivers. The room was really breathtaking with a view over all mountains. In winter it is fresh there so advisable to bring warm cloths. But if the sun comes out it is actually perfect! We will certainly come back!

Visited here in December with my wife. The resort is huge, lush green and very well maintained. Our villa was very nice with very beautiful himalayan view and sitting area outside our room was also fantastic. The bathrooms are also very huge and neat and clean. They also provide you with room heaters as it is extremely cold there. We had food at the restaurant chef Bhakuni customised the meal according to my preference which was delicious. Gajender the steward took really good care of us. Neeraj at front desk really went out of his way to make our trip memorable. I would like to thank GM pushkar and his team for providing this extra ordinary experiences to the their guests. Will highly recommend this place to everyone. Keep up the good work PUSHKAR will surely visit again.

Absolutely ruthless staff, no etiquette. Won't be unfair, three simple issues which could have been resolved got escalated to such a level, where the office manager asked us you can leave the property if you feel apt.
For those who are interested in reading the three issues:
• we asked for bornfire in an outdoor area, they charge ₹500. Q here is not about charging, if you do not have a bornfire in any outdoor area does it make sense to charge this amount when the customer is paying ₹20k per night. We have booked 3 rooms for 3 nights, so you can do the math!
• our baby was howling, we asked for warm milk which took 25 min. which is still okay. One of us, told him that why did it take so long, the answer we get is, you should have informed in advance if you needed milk. Like really!
• we ordered snacks, before completing the meal we get a bill to sign. Like we're literally in the middle of eating and we get the bill!
We thought of raising these issues to the manager, he was not in, so we spoke with the office manager Neeraj. He says everywhere across hotels, the KoT gets signed the moment food is served. Huh. Second, my sister was talking with our booking agent raising these issues, Neeraj says, "Ma'am you're blowing the issue out of proportion and you can leave the property if you feel so!". Firstly, Neeraj was not being spoken to, he was hearing the conversation and said this!
Anyways, might be we had a horrible experience, but it is my job to post the good and bad about a property enabling other guests to set their expectations right!
Thanks for reading:)

Dear Sam, We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to you. It is our continuous endeavour to meet guest expectations and ensure they have a memorable and satisfying stay. We shall definitely take our learnings from your review and make necessary amendments in our service to ensure that such concerns do not arise in future. I personally apologise for not being at the property to attend to your concerns as I was on leave to attend a family wedding. We would however also like to record our perspective here. You presented yourself as uncivil towards our staff. While we can appreciate frayed nerves, tiredness, intoxication or a combination thereof contributing to your outburst, the behaviour displayed was reprehensible and avoidable. We hope that the remainder of your stay with us was satisfactory. Thank you, Pushkar Singh Negi General Manager pushkar@thekumaon.com

Hey All!!
Here is another unposed review of The Kumaon, Almora
The property itself is so picturesque that one need not go anywhere but to enjoy nature & beauty that surround you. The view from the upper & lower Chalet both have their own uniqueness. The Tea light candles provided in the Chalet & also the washroom was just perfect. Lighting those in the evenings was simply soothing!! The Chalet was also provided with the aroma oil, which i didn't miss out at all during the stay!! Room used to be subtly aromatic along with the lit candles!!
It was awesome to be the recipient of such spectacular splendor of Nature from our very own Balcony.
The whole property is nestled amid Natural beauty!! Lovely Earthly designed washrooms!!
The whole team was kind & polite & catered to every single need!!
Special thanks to the General Manager Pushkar, Neeraj, and another Pushkar as well, also the Chef for being so polite & preparing lovelly breakfast & Thali meals throughout!!
Heartiest thanks to the whole Team of "The Kumaon" A must visit place!!
