Travellers' Choice
Nestled into a hidden ridge in the shadow of the sacred Nanda Devi Range, The Kumaon offers a private mountain retreat situated in the heart of nature. The Kumaon is located in Kasar Devi, a ridge above the historical city of Almora, which has attracted artists, pilgrims, scholars and seekers for centuries — Swami Vivekananda, DH Lawrence, Timothy Leary and Bob Dylan, to name but a few. The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is a short 15 minute drive from the property. Jageshwar, an ancient and revered temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva, is an hour's drive away. The Katarmal Surya Mandir, one of only three extant temples dedicated to the Sun, is located 30 mins away by car. Guests can walk through hamlets practising traditional agriculture; descend through forests of Oak, Cedar and Rhododendron to these ancient stone temples, or simply relax in the mountain sunshine and clean air, surrounded by birdsong and the fragrant smell of pine.

We visited the Kumaon for our first wedding anniversary. Read lots about it, especially about the architecture, the way it’s built and the breathtaking views. It truly is exactly the way you see online. Completely isolated, on the foothills of the Himalayas, a beautiful yet cozy boutique hotel. There are 10 chalets - all with the same view. The upper chalets have a terrace attached for the daredevils like us so thought we would “chill” outdoors. There are portable heaters and Bukhara in the room to keep you warm and cozy. Best part - THE MATTRESS IS HEATED! There’s no way you’re getting up when you’re in a heated bed looking at the snow capped mountains. While making the booking, the only thing that was bothering us is how would the food be? We are so isolated, if the food isn’t good, where will we eat? We read they serve local Kumaoni thalis and my husband and I are HUGE foodies. Our trips revolve around food. The food at the property is freaking incredible. I still crave for the Kumaoni Thali. Every single item put in front of us- from the ghee to the pickle, the cutlery, OMG. The basic food also was so so damn delicious. You cannot have the pre notion we had. At nights they served us more of European food and trust me, you wouldn’t have tasted that level even in Mumbai fine dine restaurants. The chefs salads are so light and fresh- we took the recipe back home. Her truffle mashed potato is so light and airy, I could challenge someone to source the same from the best of the restaurants in Mumbai. You think you would get bored of the food but the team will surprise you every single time. One day, we were served regular Punjabi food and I actually had to go up and ask for my Kumaoni thali. Everything you see/ eat at the property is locally sourced. There’s copper used almost everywhere. The staff also come from nearby villages. Infact most of them hired at the property right now are the ones who carried materials on their backs to build this property. The service - it’s no lesser than an Oberoi. And that’s a huge compliment. We had room service done twice a day when we went for our meals to the restaurant. It was pretty seamless. They would leave a plate of dessert every evening when they did our rooms. It was very cute. Not a single staff ever said a no to us when we asked for anything. The manager - Sid , extremely helpful guy! He helped our stay be extremely comfortable and unique. Overall- a must go to place.

Some stays feel like home & no matter how long you stay, you always want to come back for more, ‘The Kumaon’ is one such gem. Greenery, uninterrupted views of Snow covered kasar Devi, sunrise, sunset, beautiful treks, freshly cooked food, books, fireplace, huge comfortable bed, cosy corners - you name it & you’ll find it all at this place. Hospitality is 100 on 10. The resort manager Sid will talk to everyone & make sure to take care of everything you ask for & more. The entire staff will always greet you with a warm smile & make sure you have a perfect time. Special mention to the chefs who cook every meal to perfection. ‘The Kumaon’ is Looking at the stars while going to sleep and waking up in the clouds kind of experience! This place has our heart :)

I stayed at The Kumaon for 5 days.. n I loved every bit of it. The staff was so polite and gracious, the food was delectable. The views were breathtaking. Sid who was the manager had great suggestions. My every request was attended to. Sanjay and others at the restaurant were beyond belief accommodating. Anita at the spa was really nice too.It was a perfect blend of quiet time and treks, the last day the team surprised me with a tea set up by the mountains where our sunset walk ended. It was so lovely ! I would go back in a heart beat ! Infact I think the Kumaon will be part of my yearly pilgrimage.. if you are looking for a property with all elements of joie de vivre - this could be it ! Thank you … huge gratitude to all from all my heart

You don’t ever think a property nestled where there’s network issues would serve you “Truffles”. I don’t think there’s a single area in which “The Kumaon” doesn’t excel. Its brilliant team are extremely extremely warm and even more helpful. The massage, to the trek, and the impromptu bonfires are so tailored fit to please the guests that you are left with gratitude. The food is too good to be true and the views; no matter how feel you click a picture it doesn’t do any justice to the spectacular views. Sid, the man behind our experience would converse with each and everyone at the dining space, he was always eager to outdo our expectations. Meenakshi would smile each time we crossed the lobby and treated us with so much love and warmth . Nandu would always ask if we had some strength to do another trek. And Rohit & Anand would serve you with the biggest smiles. I would rate this place as JUST TOOOO GOOOD!
