Chariot Beach Resort is often celebrated for its prime beachfront location in Mahabalipuram, offering guests a serene experience close to local attractions. Visitors commend the resort's cleanliness, including its well-kept pools, and the friendly service, although some have reported slow responses from staff. While the atmosphere is generally considered pleasant, critiques do highlight dated decor. Despite the variety of praised amenities, many guests feel the pricing for food and services is steep, questioning the overall value. Additionally, the spaciousness of the rooms is noted, but their level of cleanliness and maintenance sometimes falls short.

I took a risk inspite of multiple mixed reviews about the resort both from rooms and hospitality. The resort is definitely not a 4 star one. Hospitality is nowhere closer.

My views.
Stayed at Pool View Cottage. Rooms are spacious. Good outside bathroom with strings to dry clothes. Bathrooms were reported having few issues, but the rooms (4 of them) didn't have big issues. Yes, here and there tiles are not good, but not harmful.
Outdoor activities are great and the property is pretty big. Access to beach is great and is private as well with people advising around the waves. Definitely not a place to bath in the sea due to steep nature of the sea in that area. But guards are there advising on what to do and what not to do, which is good. They have buggy that helps you to move around.

Areas to consider
ACs in cottage were reported in the past as one areas of concern. Even during my stay, it was a big concern. out of the 4 rooms we stayed, 3 had AC issues. Even changing the temp was nightmare. AC made lot of noise suddenly in the middle of the night to disturb your sleep. Looks like the management is not taking this issue seriously since I have seen this being reported many times.
Indoor activities require refurbish. Definitely not a 4 star kind.
Food is bit mixed. Some of the dishes are great, some are below average. Food takes long time to be served if you order.

Resort is pricey.

We ate in the chariot beach resort restaurant this evening and really enjoyed our meal. The king fish with fresh vegetables was very tasty, thankful compliments to our chef who helped us order our food to our requirements, explained how the fish would be cooked and cooked our food to perfection. Sumi the F &B executive gave excellent service, was assisted by smiling waitresses, Gulhar, Ipsita, Ranu and Sandhya. Beers were served in ice cold glasses and the mango lassi, a traditional Indian milk and mango drink were both refreshing. Our friends ate butter chicken Indian dish with naan bread and they enjoyed very much, including the complimentary desserts which we all loved, thank you all for a lovely evening, Lynda and Roy Gingell

Located next to the five rathas, Chariot Beach Resort is a beachfront resort with golf and a large swimming pool. You have to be staying in a cottage to enjoy the place. The air conditioning is discreet and the bedding comfortable. In extension of the bathroom there is an outdoor shower. Breakfast is varied and can be enjoyed outdoors. Massages are also available. Be careful, however, to display the prices and remember to check whether the taxes are included or not. My massage at 3000inr finally cost me almost 3700inr, while nothing was specified on the list of services.

The portico at the entrance to the hotel is impressive but the rest of the hotel is extremely tired and in need of renovation and not worthy of the luxury 5 star beach resort it describes itself as. The reception area is huge and laid with laminate/wood flooring. Every plank had lifted at the edges, so much so, it's be a trip hazard in places. The staff were very friendly and polite on arrival and as we were to early to check in, we were told we could use the hotel's facilities in the meantime. We went down to the outdoor pool to rest on the sunbeds after a long flight. There were no towels available and the sunbeds were ancient and in a state of disrepair with split vinyl covers and broken backs. The paving around the pool was filthy and the water in the pool was green. We were given room 216 which was up a cracked tiled staircase. There was no lift. The room was basic to say the least and the decor and fittings were old and tired. The bed and bedding was clean and comfortable. There was no WiFi access in the rooms, only in reception. Although the hotel website states there are 2 restaurants, there was only 1 and no 24hr bar and bakery as stated in the website. The staff in the restaurant were friendly and helpful. The filtration system on the pool was switched on and the water was clear on the second day of our stay. All in all, the hotel is probably only 2 star at best and our stay there was very disappointing.

Awful experience. Hotel website is s Awful experience. Hotel website is stunning but the experience is anything but. Waited 2 1/2 hour for our rooms which were not cleaned properly. Very outdated reception and staff are not helpful. Tired, smelly tunning but the experience is anything but it's deceiving in real life. Waited 2 1/2 hour for our rooms which were not cleaned properly. Very outdated reception and staff are not helpful. Tired, smelly
We had booked this past of South India Tour and extremely disappointed as soon as stepped out of the coach. The gardens are all overgrown and lawns look tired brown nothing like website pictures. Our rooms were not provided until 3 pm. Not much seating and very outdated furniture and no proper reception. We didn't get a good feeling right from the reception. The person at the reception was hardly courteous and just handed the key after a long check in process and didn't bother to direct us to the way to the room. We had three deluxe rooms booked but after a lot of complaint we were eventually offered two rooms to freshen up. After repeated calls luggage was ending up in wrong room and had to bring to my room by myself.

The bedroom was good. However the washrooms were outdated, mouldy ceilings, mirrors not cleaned. showers was broken, toilets were dirty, no linen and not cleaned properly after previous checkout. We later at night realized that the AC remote was faulty. This was my worst and horrible experience for a five star rated hotel. It is not a give star more like a three star.
The dinni groom was outdated, dirty , windows were flighty with smudges. We was concerned on eating but took a brave decision and ate. On a positive note it was good choice as the food was well prepared, tasty and well worth the money.
The pool was well maintained but didn't use.

Overall it was a bad place to stay and I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Pros - Chariot is a good property on a whole. The manager Mohandoss Narayan is the best they have at hospitality and this place has potential.
Cons - Though a 4 star property it is not maintained. The washrooms and rooms are not clean and have all kinds of dirt and dust on the mattresses and side sofa. We had to change 3 rooms. The staff is not trained to cater and are not hygienic themselves specially the early morning staff.

Not sure where to start about what went wrong. Nah to see what went right is the suitable one.
Disclaimer: I have told everything to the Team and the Manager in the resort and given them the chance to rectify it, but it only got worse. So I have to write this review and told them I will write.
1. We came around 2 pm and waited nearly 30 mins after checking in to know where the room is. They said the staff is coming but finally we took our luggage and went to the room by ourselves.
2. As shown in the pic, the bedding and the cover were 'Rat-bitten'. When we complained about that, the manager told 'Usually it will be put the other way, not sure how the housekeeping did this way'. Now I am questioning the cleanliness and the quality of service.
3. We asked for a change of room, but they didn't give us one and told us this is a better room than the others. (How will be the other rooms then?)
4. It was my Mom's birthday so we came here to celebrate, we asked for room service for plates and ordered some desserts we didn't receive for more than 45 mins. and when we went to ask about it, they said they never received the request!!
5. The staff in the restaurant were polite enough to answer, but the staff in the reception were rude enough that not even bothered to see us during talking.
6. All these things happened and nobody cared to rectify them.

Hygiene - The worst ever I have seen in my life

I am wondering about the other reviews as it seems to be not true!

Overall experience, worst ever stay in Tamil Nadu in 25 years!

Penning my review with a conscious mind that the hospitality sector is reeling with the impact of Covid-19 and we all should extend the best possible support to the hospitality sector.

The Paradise: It is one of the large sprawling beach reports with a well maintained lawn, massive swimming pool, wonderfully designed cottages, access to the beach. Lots of open spaces for peace and quiet. Kids have a play area which is functional, there is a snooker table with some board games around. Staff is kind and helpful and wants to serve

The Purgatory: Terribly understaffed and stretched to the limits personnel. Room service in beach resorts which are spread is always a challenge but this one exceeds all patience timelines. I had to call for water over 5 times. Food is average at best and bad in some cases but what is most annoying is the non availability of dishes on the buffet, firstly there are no starters in the spread (which is acceptable), There are no counters for eggs/breads and you have to catch hold of the 3-4 waiters (which is extremely difficult) to place your order and wait for extended periods f time before you are served. Simple setting up of tables with cutlery & water is not a part of the system. Be prepared to be at the breakfast table before 8:30 to find dishes and space and dinner before 9:00 PM or you will have to make do with leftovers.

The straw that broke the camels back- When you go to a beach resort you expect seafood fresh. A fish finger dish ordered for my 10 year old came out as stale fish with mayonnaise with terrible oil smell and led my son to have a stomach infection on the way back. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Reversing the charge for the dish is not the expected outcome

So while I think the resort has potential and can be developed post the covid impact with better staffing the quality and hygiene has to improve and the buck needs to stop with someone for these incidents

Totally dis appointed from entry level into this Resort.

Took more than 30 minutes for Room allocation at 3 pm though we have requested early check in.

The response from House keeping service and Done in Room service also taking more than 30 minutes as turn around time and at one point totally ignored or forgotten our request.

Bathrooms filled with mosquitoes and on the Beds we noticed small particles of Beach sand.

The tea and coffee served with complimentary break fast is the worst ever I had tasted.

Overall a big disappointment.

We stayed at this resort for 3 nights. The resort has good facilities. However, everything seems rundown and needs upgrading. We opted for a family room. The bathroom shower cubicle had a door missing! While the bathroom was clean, it needed upgrading. The clothesline and soap holder were off the wall. There were no mats in the bathroom.
Housekeeping would take away towels and not replace them. We had to call several times to get it. Also, coffee sachets, sugar etc were not replaced everyday.
Breakfast was complimentary but stale. Baked items seemed to be hard and was the same everyday. Idlis, ragi upma were definitely not fresh.
The swimming pool is good. Although the notice board says you have to be in swimming costumes, the lifeguard allowed people in boxers, banians, salwars, leggings and even nude children!
