Travellers' Choice
Bhanwar Vilas Palace is a series of delightful discoveries-from the first awe-inspiring glimpse of its magnificent façade standing out against the ancient town of Karauli, which dates from 1348, to an exploration of its edgy decor aesthetic-an eclectic melding of Oriental and Art Deco forms. Built in 1938 it is the family home of Maharaja Krishna Chandra Pal, who is the 181st in an illustrious line tracing itself back to Lord Krishna and is the head of the Yaduvanshi Rajputs. As the historic heads of the ancient area of Brajbhoomi, a stay with the family offers not simply a slice of history but a composite understanding of the unique culture of this area. Join us on an extravagant spiritual and cultural voyage, amidst gracious, regal hospitality.

It is an excellent experience to spend some time in this royal heritage palace. Each room is unique and the campus itself is made up of majestic heritage structures. A treat to history, art and architecture lovers. There are some awesome antiques, a beautiful courtyard garden and a royal dining hall. Superb service and very good food make this place a highly recommendable destination.

I stayed here for two nights with my tour group and it was, by far, my favorite property during my trip. It is an actual palace that is still owned and operated by the Maharaja. In fact, his son greeted us as we were exploring the property and was very generous with his time, showing us their antique collection which includes one of only 15 Buick 8s in the world and other antique cars, elephant barriers, camel cannons, etc.; their beautiful palomino horses (which he offered to have us ride), their organic garden and stunning grounds with a unique aquarium that is no longer in use but that is a very interesting space, plus lots of peacocks and other exotic birds everywhere. There is a lovely pool area, but it was being renovated while we were there. The hotel and my room were interesting - no bland, brand name hotel here! Pictures from their past, antiques, a lovely courtyard area, a comfortable room with plenty of space and amenities. Wi-Fi was free and available in the common spaces. Every meal we ate here was very well done, made with ingredients from their garden. Staff were friendly and accommodating to our every need. And, they even arranged some cool experiences for us at a very nominal fee including going to their palace in town which is untouched from 100s of years ago, riding camel carts, getting henna tattoos and dressing the ladies in our group in saris for dinner. I highly recommend staying here and including a visit to Karauli on your itinerary!

I can't imagine a tour of Rajasthan without staying here. The grounds are lively; the rooms, palatial, and the food and service both are impeccable. Their Highnesses are wonderful hosts, gracious and graceful. To tour the grounds and City Palace with Mr Dinesh was a great experience, as he is a great guide with a sensitivity to his guests that we others can only hope to achieve.

I stayed here last year and was most impressed by beautiful Art Deco hotel where the Maharaja of Karauli and his family live and regularly mix with Guests. As someone who lives in a very old house and was brought up in one I’m used to the eccentricity of old buildings so am not put off by the fact that some things may not be perfect but the beauty of the place more than makes up for it.The food is very good and all based on organic vegetables from the garden. The staff all come from the area . I note the comments of a recent guest who was unhappy with hard beds etc I can’t say that has been my experience . I’m familiar with Interpid and I also know the very low prices they pay hotels so can’t agree with the view that they were getting bad value the Rambagh Palace in Jaipur which is of course 5 star, would be almost 10 times the price. All in all I think this hotel is great value as a period palace and one of the very few still occupied by the family a rare opportunity for people who appreciate the uniqueness of this . However some people will prefer the standard rooms and blandness of a chain hotel.

I visited as part of an Intrepid tour group & this was a lovely step back in time to a traditional property. I thought the grounds were very nice as were the different area’s we dined in. My room was very big & although the temperatures were low, I had a good nights sleep just borrowing 1 extra blanket off the other bed & I understand extra blankets were available for everyone. I also enjoyed the lunch & evening meal I had here & the drinks were reasonably priced. I would happily have stayed another night as it was a lovely space to totally switch off in away from most noise (apart from the odd animal)
