My friends and I spent 3 amazing days at Hingaara. Undoubtedly one of the best homestay experiences of our lives. The property is stunning and perfect for those looking for a tranquil experience. Rooms are spacious, clean, and well lit. Hot water is available. Food is absolutely delicious and a variety of Malnad cuisine. The host, Shashank, moved mountains to make our stay feel amazing and arranged bonfires for us. He even took out some time to show us his beautiful heritage home and spend time talking to us about the place and the surroundings. Every single staff is courteous who take care of you very well. A memorable experience to cherish. Would highly recommend this place. We would definitely return to this amazing place. Thank you Hingaara.

We were there for 3 nights and 4 days as two families with 3 kids between us. My wife and I are avid travelers . This is to set the perspective we bring.

Mr Jayaram , his wife and sister run this place along with a few domestic helps - Satish,Sundar, Santosh and a couple more.

This is an ancestral home that has now been opened to city dwellers like us, to experience the wilderness and unspoiled rusticity of Agumbe and its surroundings. Life is quite simple and unrushed there and the whole experience reflects that.

The main house has a few rooms with another 3 constructed alongside to accommodate more guests. The rooms are basic with a bed, a neat toilet, a fan and light for fixtures - hot water when needed.

We loved it that way- If we wanted 2, 3, 4 or 5 star concierge services, with towels, toiletries, iron stand, and mini-bar attached, we would not have come to Agumbe. This is not meant to be a resort. There is no mobile connectivity (Except for bsnl), no internet and the small 14 inch TV in the main hall was hardly used by anyone of us.

Instead, we sat down and talked. We bonded with our hosts, the amiable Mr Jayaram , his lovely wife and friendly sister who explained the territory, the culture, the life in those parts, Malnad cuisine, the history of the house, their plans and life in general.........

The food is exemplary -both veg and non veg. We had breakfast , lunch and dinner for 3 whole days, and everyday was a different menu - Mrs Jayaram cooked every single thing we wished for.......and always with a smile. We woke up with one of the best filter coffees we'd tasted each day. My friends who were non-veggies were served 8 varieties of chicken along with crabs and even pork (upon request). Mrs Jayaram doesn't eat pork, but I wanted to highlight the exceptional service where they go out of their way to ensure that every whim and fancy of the guests are catered to....and always with a smile.

They use separate vessels and ladles for veg and non veg, and for those finicky few who want a veggie only place - I would say, the whole experience of travelling is to mix and mingle and appreciate the life and culture that other people lead.... if you want everything to yourselves and everything your way , how does travel enrich your lives?

Yes, they don't leave 3 towels in the bathroom like a hotel would, but I asked for towels and got it.

They sent us tour guides at no extra costs and we covered Kundadri,Agumbe,Sringeri,Backwaters, Jogi Gundi, Trekking on the hills, Sirimane falls and many more - all with the help of the hosts....

Pack a few basic toiletries, towels, a good camera and some extra clothes - that's all you need there.
More than anything, it is the attitude of the hosts , the genuine warmth that they exude and the homely feeling we got during the 3 days, that were the highlight of the tour.

We went to look at the hills, but came back with memories of Malnad hospitality.

Will definitely recommend this to families who want travel to be a learning experience, and a journey that soothes the soul and touches your heart in the end.

Thank you Hingaara.

As the name suggests, staying at Hingaara was a peaceful experience. Staff was very hospitable and we were served authentic malnad food during our stay. Keep in mind that the region experiences a lot of rain, so power cuts and insects are common- do not expect luxury. There are a lot of scenic places close by, just ask the family for guidance- they are eager to help.

Worth : 1st looking at the website, we thought 2k is decent for the stay and the activities specified. When we asked for list of activities, they said badminton, carrom , cricket( not sure whether to consider these as activities), which was pretty surprising. We ditched the activities and went for sight seeing not included in the package(but on the website they say its included). We paid 1.9k/person only for stay and food. This place is only worth for its half of the money.

Home stay place - photos put on website regarding stay is not the ones given to the guests. Pics put on website is the place where owners stay. Rooms were out of standard for the cost they had taken.

Hospitality - was very good. We were constantly taken care of food and stay. And jayram and other assistants were very humble and polite.

Place of the resort - beautiful place lot of falls, greenery

Negatives -
1. Rooms were low standard
2. Food was just decent
3. None of the activities were covered. Their justification when asked was, "we thought u ppl were interested in sight seeing more".
4. Not at all worth the money
5. Do not go by website standards.

Good:
The location of the place is extremely good. Kundadri hills is an awesome place to visit. There are quite a few waterfalls that will quench your thirst for adventure. Even the home stay has a small stream that you can take a sip during monsoon. The owner Jayaram is friendly.

Bad:
This is one of those home stays that has sprung up with no attention to detail on quality or service. The rooms are badly done. The rooms don't have basic amenities & you've to even ask the owner to provide a towel. The rooms aren't even plastered/painted. The walls are so poorly done that you can hear what your neighbors speaking.

Food is really off the mark. Cooks veg & non-veg together, if you're a pure vegetarian, please avoid this place.

Overall: Definitely not worth the money. If you're looking for a quiet place to enjoy the monsoon, look somewhere else.

We booked this place during christmas holidays for 2 nights after going through the previous reviews and we were very much disappointed :( I will try to keep my review short and useful (hopefully):

Positives:
1) Locality - it's amidst nature
2) Closer to few sightseeing places - Agumbe, Kundadri hills & Sringeri

Negatives:
1) We were surprised to look at the rooms (not inside the house shown in the pic) but outside separately built just for this stay purpose with cot, bed & dressing table (we could not use this table except for mirror as the drawers were jammed). The room was definitely not worth the money we paid.

2) We reached there around 1.30 pm and had informed the previous day that we would arrive for lunch. SO the next shocker was " food was not ready". All we got to hear was a huge group had just checked out and the food was over. After about 15 - 20 mins, we were called for lunch which was not at all to our expectation. Seemed left overs.

3) Tube light was not functional, we had to request them to replace it. Flush was broken, we informed the hosts and we were informed that the previous guests might have broken it but it was not resolved.

4) Hosts are definitely polite when they speak but not in their actions. For breakfast, we were offered bread slices along with Paddu (south indian dish), but were given empty jam bottle. When requested for butter, they said it was over. Seemed they run this homestay just for time pass and not at all professional.

5) Evening when requested for tea around 4pm, we were informed the milk was under lock & key and the host was sleeping.

6) The package offered to us included fishing etc. which was not covered fully. Though we do not mind this.

7) Other guests staying with us requested for non-veg starters for dinner. We were under the impression that even we (veggies) would by default be provided with veg starters along with them but were told that we did not give them any instructions on this.

8) Finally came the billing part, we were charged double the amount as confirmed over email. It took us some time to explain them the actual calculation offered to us by her brother, unfortunately we had not carried the print of the email and you do not get any network except BSNL. Thankfully it was resolved amicably.

Good part : The local guide is good and location is good
Bad part:
Avoid if you are a pure veg person.
Avoid this place if you need peace.. you can just listen to every thing the next room people talk
No foot rugs , no towels , no cleaning of rooms ..shaddy toilets... they dont put on the generator if power goes off.
Coffee is served in smallest of small cups..
The hostess does not have a smile on her face and when asked for a safety pin , she just reacted very badly.
The rooms looks like cow sheds and it is not even plastered ..
The length of the bed is so small that a person above 165 cms will find difficult to sleep .
There is no hospitality moto with the hosts ..
Avoid taking any products like honey as they charge 30% more than other places.

Agumbe - "Karnataka da Chirapunji ", a very nice place to visit. 11 of us went in rainy season(July 11, 2015) Hingaara home stay is a best place to stay. Hospitality in that is simply superb. The guide is very very helpful. The gave us a nice package. In one day we covered 6 places and enjoyed fully. The places we visited are starting from Kundadri hills,Jogi gundi falls, Agumbe view point,Hanging bridge,Kattina madki, Varaahi back waters. In the night we had camp fire :) No words to explain Hingaara.. Next day morning we went to Water cave walk, then played kabbadi in the courtyard of the homestay. While coming back visited Shringeri and kuppalli. If you are planning to go agumbe choose hingaara home stay. You can enjoy the most.
Leaches will be there. Because of leaches we didnt go for trekking. So do not go in rainy season if you are scared of leaches.

If any of you are thinking of a holiday trip, then this is the right place to visit. If you are a nature lover and you are interested in ancient houses and lively hood, then then this place is perfect for you and if you hate all these then all you need is one visit to this place and you'll start liking it. You'll get different kinds of activities. This place is run by a very nice family with a few helpers so you'll get complete attention and you'll have great service. When you're there you'll feel like you're in your own house. You get both veg and non-veg food here which is prepared right over there and is marvelously delicious. you have no traffic noise but only the noise of nature. I think it's become pretty long by now so I would like it wind it up right over here but one thing.......all that I've said now is just a part of what it actually is. So to experience the whole thing, you'll have to visit this place!

Reaching the place - no problems at all and even if lost, the team can guide you efficiently.

The rooms - hmm, these cannot be termed a room by hotel standards and also by home stay expectations. Most like a budget accommodation that you can expect at a remote place! Just bed[s] and toilet, yes the fan is working.

Cleanliness - during our 3 days stay, the rooms or the toilets were never cleaned. The beds not done or the soaps / towels were not provided. Apart from the room the area around is neat in natural sense nothing spectacular though.

Service - Very friendly, particularly the helping staff like 'Satisha' without whom I doubt if people will extend beyond their first day at this place.

Food - OK usually and at times also good. But asking the guest to get some milk to prepare coffee in the morning is a bit over the limit!!! The excuse was 'milk ran out and we dont have a vehicle'. But later we were provided some weak tea....

Recreation / Things to do / Sightseeing - OK and mostly the activities were outside the home stay [public places] which is guided by the friendly staff.

Overall....compared to other home-stays that I had done, I would rate this quite low but for the location 'Agumbe'....This place is worth 'Half the Price'.

Yes sir, they do take for forest with legal permission. In Agumbe there are no Safaries, so this question doesn't arrive. But, their naturalists are well experienced and knowledgeable.
