Amidst the typically Assamese village of Jalukonibari, stands the 72 year old Thengal Manor in Jorhat. Thengal offers you the unique pleasure of gracious living in the lap of nature. Plush suites of single and double bedrooms with baths and dressing rooms attached. In addition there is a sitting room, dining room, lounge. kitchen and pantry. Feel the ambiance of colonial days as you relax in the period furniture and decor. A sense of dejavu pervades when you realize that this was the lifestyle of pioneering Assam planters.

Detailed Reviews
A delightful mansion, built in 1929 by the wealthy son of an important 19th century tea planter. Yes, it's old fashioned in style and showing its age in places, but that is its charm. You drive up to a huge portico with a verandah where you can sip your tea, and inside there's a delightful drawing room with antiques and knick knacks. Our room (room 3) was huge - about 40 square metres - with a very large en suite, but despite being old fashioned, it had a good hot water supply and a modern shower that worked well. Outside there is a swimming pool, and behind the house a curious but interesting family mausoleum. Dinner was a set menu, but it included plenty of variety and was of very good quality. The service was excellent too.

We went for a short outing to Thengal Manor in Sep'21. The entry fees was 150 per head and does not include any complimentary tea or snacks. There are rooms for guests to stay and some rooms open for outside visitors, which houses many antiques. There is a swimming pool at the entry and huge area to roam around. We went for tea and light snacks , but you can also avail lunch there. Overall, good place near Jorhat to spend few hours.

Thengal Manor is home to the affluent and illustrious Khongiya Barooah family. Their contribution to Assamese society is immense on economic and cultural front. Some of their properties have been converted into Heritage boutique hotels Thengal Manor being one of these. The very first daily newspaper in Assamese, ‘Dainik Batori’ was launched on 12th August 1935 from this historic place. Located in a village named Jalukonibari, merely 15 km away from the town of Jorhat, it looks regal with a beautiful lawn and swimming pool at the front. Once we entered inside I was overwhelmed by the magnificence – the architecture, the furniture, the antique showpieces, paintings, picture gallery. We could not see the suits as these were all occupied. There is a beautiful Namghar also in the campus. After exploring the premises to our heart’s content, we availed the Sunday Buffet lunch which was quite nice.

We stayed at the Thengal Manor at the end of an ardous two week tour of Nagaland and it was a welcome taste of luxury. Well appointed wth beautifully decorated interiors this hotel is a real pleasure. The dinner and breakfast were excellent as was the service, the staff could not do enough for us. Others have wirtten about the architecture which while not spectacular is pleasingly heritage in nature. A proper 'boutique' hotel and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Great service with old world charm! The food (especially the Assamese cuisine) was outstanding. Almost like good cooked by my grandmother! The building and some of the grounds (swimming pool for example) need a little TLC…especially given their age. One simple fix would be to replace all the fused bulbs! However, overall a very pleasant experience.

We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary and stayed for 2 days. As soon as you enter the premises, the grandeur of the place will mesmerize you. And finally the room will give you a genuine royal feeling..service was great, specially from Bijoy..They arranged a bonfire and service there was also very good..we and both the kids enjoyed every bit of the stay..food items were quite good..the swimming pool was under repair, so couldn't access it.

Thengal Manor is unique,no question of that, the bedrooms are palatial.antique Edwardian/Victorian furniture to sit on,sleep in,eat off, fabulous artefacts and paintings everywhere, a veritable museum to spend leisure time in. Hot water is plentiful, available all day long, quite unusual in N.E India. The bathrooms are,to be fair, in need of a "handy man" to do some maintenance, however it all works and that's what's important.
Beds are comfortable we had a kettle and the usual tea making equipment complete with very good powdered milk!! My friend
and I shared the only Twin bedded room, with a "sit out",spent hours watching the many birds that inhabit the fantastic gardens.A pair of nesting forest owls in a nearby tree were fascinating to watch. Binoculars are essential here, the roof is great for dawn bird watching!!! We spotted Barbets,Bulbuls, mynahs,Orioles, kingfishers, parakeets, pied robins, sunbirds and Drongos. The gardens are lovely, better maintained than the house actually, with resident goats helping to keep the hedges even!!
Food is ok, there is no alternative here to eat out, there are little local stalls to buy biscuits and snacks if you get peckish. We had a very nice bottle of Shiraz (Indian) with our evening meal, not a bad price at just over £10.00 a bottle. Dinner is served at a large dining table complete with table cloth and spotless linen every night. The staff cannot do enough to make your stay memorable, always smiley and cheerful.
The two swimming pools, were,at the time we stayed, more a home for toads and frogs than to enable hot guests to cool off,but as it was the end of the season and we were virtually the last guests with no desire at all to swim,it was of no importance.
There is NO network coverage for European phones and no WiFi,be warned! Also be aware that the airport is only 23 minutes away, paid far too much for a taxi. Generally the taxis here are expensive so BARGAIN hard!
To summarize,Thengal Manor does need a lot of TCL to restore it to its palatial splendour and hopefully this will happen one day,but it IS a great place to unwind, and recharge the batteries before going back to Calcutta and England

An excellent Heritage property with nice and courteous staff and excellent upkeep. The place is situated within 20 kms of Jorhat City and can be reached by any vehicle. A good single lane road connects the property with the city. The property has two swimming pools, one for adults and other for children. Luscious vegetation and a number of fruit trees all around with 2 lakes, temple and greenery all around makes this place an excellent destination to relax and unwind. The property has 6 rooms well kept and ornately decorated and offers discounts of over 15 % for direct booking. Direct Bookings can be made by calling up 9435514177. Booking through other online sites would be costly. A family of 4(2 Adults and 2 Children) can be accommodated comfortably in the room as the room size is big.

We had a plan to reach Majuli but terrible traffic delayed us and the last ferry that leave from Nimati ghat (near Jorhat) left for the day! We would either have to spend ₹6000/- for one way transfer to Majuli or stay back and take a ferry for ₹706/- in the morning so we headed to Welcome Heritage Thengal Manor! They just wouldn't let is in; we spoke to the head office, local office, resident manager - all gave us different answers - but said they can't let us stay there without prior booking! 😬 🌹
