If you read the Tanhau website and the descriptions resonate with you, book your tickets NOW. That's what we did after a two year wait through lockdowns and a crazy new world. It was a perfect holiday. Kayin, aged 5: Sunando uncle, I like the place of your house because you got 7 dogs now. You had 6 dogs but 7 dogs is much funner than 6. So, I like the beach (read river), going on the ride (jeep rides), and I love the food what was yummy. Bye! Kinaya, aged 9: I love the greenery around Tanhau. You feel free, you get to explore, go for walks with the dogs in the fog. It’s so clear at night that you can see Jupiter and so many stars, more than in the city. It feels like another world. If you are a nature lover you’ll definitely love Tanhau. Everyone should visit as it’s an amaaaazing place! I missed it as soon as I left. The four of us took the overnight train from Delhi to Ramnagar and drove up to Tanhau. A very comfortable journey. Such delight at experiencing the last stretch on the dirt track! Lots of hot tea, food aplenty, two long open jeep rides to the Kosi and Ramganga, many skies, many views, the silence, the jungle sounds, the hills, so many special things...but very importantly the people and dogs at the heart of it. Umaid so dignified, ever so expertly helping the children along on the walks and escorting us to dinner one night when we were sure there was a leopard on our roof! Bharat with his quiet presence kept our plates and stomachs full. Subhash deftly drove us around and set up picnics by the river. All ably supporting Sunando's dream that we were so lucky to experience just a little. His stories and videos are not to be missed! We were lucky to be there when DD and Nilanjana were visiting for the fourth time. New friends who enriched our visit. To understand the importance of the dogs in the mix Kayin asked 'What's his name again?" 'Whose name?" "The human...'" Mojo, Wolfie, Karma, Bolt, Shai, Shrek, and the occasional visit by Dollar, are who will make us keep going back. When? In 2 months now! We can't wait till April '23. Shaneel, Aditya, Kinaya and Kayin From Kolkata…
We travelled to Tanhau in Dec 2021, with a family of 4 adults including 2 senior citizens and one 9 yo child. We were looking for a relaxed, quite holiday and we were very happy with our choice. We stayed in the Chukar cottage, which has 2 rooms and a beautiful sit out. This is a great place for relaxing, and taking long walks in the nearby forests and villages. The property is personally managed by Sunando along with a very able staff of 3. There are 5 very friendly dogs on the property, and we had a great time playing with them. They will accompany you on the walks and even come to your room to play. From youngest to oldest, every one enjoyed this property, with the major drivers of enjoyment being as below (cannot let go of corporate speak can we 😊) 1. Personal attention by the host – Sunando is a great host, with encyclopedic knowledge of Corbett’s wildlife and environs. He is a very engaging conversationalist and joined us for many meals, regaling us with his anecdotes ! 2. The sheer isolation – no other touristy places nearby, so you really enjoy the solitude 3. Great food – the cook was very good, and we had great Kumaoni as well as continental and Asian food. He had made some Khao Swe, which was some of the best Burmese, I have had ever 4. Walks and trails nearby There are no major drawbacks to this place, except if you are expecting a regular touristy experience, this is not for you. And we are thankful for that 😊…
We were looking for splendid isolation and we found it in Tanhau’s rolling mountaintop views. The river seems to flow into the horizon, the breeze and clouds climb uphill and up to the cabins, and the fireflies and distant lights suggest other habitation is far, far away. To top the natural delights is the fresh and delicious food and comfortable cabins. A real break that needs going back to regularly.
Our trip to Tanhau really hit the spot. If you're looking for a place that is peaceful, quiet and offers the comfort of home-cooked meals - look no further! The walks around the property led by Umaid were extremely enjoyable and picturesque. The host, staff and dogs were all very welcoming and warm. Highly recommend Tanhau for a wholesome and serene getaway to the hills!
Located in the buffer area of the Jim Corbett, this is a great place, away from the maddening crowds near the tourist areas of the park. On the flip side, if you want to go for a safari or some place nearby the 4-5 kilometer drive from the property to the main road takes a good 30 minutes because of the treacherous approach road. If you are driving your own vehicle then make sure you get a 4 wheel drive with high ground clearance. Two wheel drives will struggle on some of the slippery inclines. Or you can get to the property on their vehicles easily. We booked their 2 room cottage “Chukar” for 4 nights for our family. This cottage is very well done with a large sit-out area with great views of the Kosi river valley and has a very well stocked library. We wanted to just chill, hence we did just one safari and one trip to the river in 4 days. We went on morning walks and small hikes around the property. Never felt bored even for a moment. There is no TV but their internet was decent. Airtel/Jio mobile connectivity was patchy. The owner, Sunando, is prompt in response, very helpful and knowledgeable. The staff are also polite and provide great service. The food is decent and varied. One of the highlights for us was the gang 5 dogs they have, they are very friendly and quite playful during the morning walk. This is a place worth going back again and again.…
This homestay is beyond Corbett on the mountain top with fabulous views of the Corbett reserve and the Kosi River on one side. And you can spot the snow covered Himalayas on the other side on a clear day a short walk away. It was a 6.5-7 hour drive (not including any stops) from Gurgaon to Tanhau for us. We stayed for 3 nights and left wishing we had planned for more! It's simple, very comfortable, located well inside from the main road and surrounded only by mountains and wilderness. Beautifully made overall and a lot of focus on sustainability (e.g. solar panels). Absolutely quiet at night and you can hear calls from the forest! We stayed at Bagh and I recommend a minimum stay of 3 nights for sure, ideally 4 to 5 :) What to do: walks and hikes around during the day and early evening; Tapu, choti and godi (I hope I got the names right!) Some of the best views I've experienced in a while and the 5 dogs give you company throughout. Read a book, enjoy the dogs company, play board/card games and enjoy the sunset from the front courtyard of Bagh. Food: All meals are home cooked since there is nothing around. Excellent food; not oily or overly spicy and yummm! Indian and continental options by Bhagat, the cook. Thank you Sunando for your hospitality :) and thanks to the rest of the team; Subhash, Bhagat and the doggos; Neo, Wolfie, Bolt, Karma and Dollar. We'll hopefully be back soon!…
I don’t normally write reviews but it would be a shame to not drop a glowing review for Tanhau given the enchanting experience it has been. Words fall short, pictures don’t do full justice, it’s an experience - you’ve got to experience it to know. Suffice it to say Tanhau has my heart! Its humans will leave an indelible mark on your heart - Umaid Ji - our gracious hike partner and guide, Panchi - an outstanding cook and of course Sunando - to begin with thank you for sharing your little piece of heaven with us, your stories left me craving for more (I’ve been relaying them to my friends) and thanks for entertaining my silly questions about your encounters with wildlife. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the 5 four legged residents of Tanhau - wiseman Neo, goofball Karma, why-so-serious Wolfie, oldman Mojo and kinda confused Bolt! Tanhau is a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts like me. In and around Tanhau nature dominates, it’s majesty made me realise the relative insignificance of my city life concerns! I’ll be back for more! Just a warning - you don’t leave Tanhau when you leave it, mentally it’ll take you a few days to get back…:) BRB must thank my stars and Instagram algos for Tanhau popping up in my Insta feed a few years ago and my stars for making this trip possible. PS Follow Tanhau on Instagram PPS Silence here can be deafening for those not at peace with themselves…
The more I want to write about Tanhau the less it will be. A stay here transports you to serene, untamed surrounding preserved in its natural bounty. This is a place for people who look no further than nature as their companion. Beautiful aesthetically and ecofriendly cottages set in a canvas of the Almora hills just above Corbett with the forest around, mesmerizing sunrise and sunsets, changing colours of the hills and the sky, calls of the wild and occasional sighting of the jungle folk weaves an unforgettable experience. Not to mention the amazing hospitality of Sunondo and his team wraps you in the feeling of homely comfort that is difficult to shake of when it is time to leave. Balmy evenings with stories from the jungles, amazing collection of books, games and photographs captured by Sunondo in his numerous visits to the jungle is fascinating. The cuisine offered is considering it slocations and kudos to The stars of the stay i…
The place was simply beautiful. the views, the treks, the hospitality all A+ We spotted various birds, ghoral on a hill top. To our excitement, we even came across Leopard scratch marks n pug mark on our walks ! Would def look to visit again.
A hidden gem in Jim Corbett National park, it truly lives upto its motto" Your private Wilderness". After a long time truly found a place i was sad to return from.
