Kabini River lodge is an amazing vacation spot, we stayed there at JLR for a day’s package…Food, field safari & boat safari was a brilliant experience…Above all food spread were extraordinary…I must mention “Head Chef Mr Ashish” was so good…he had delicious spread of cuisines…it was simply lip-smaking….Staffs of JLR Kabini River lodge were very kind and warmth. I any day prefer Kabini River Lodge for a vacation, do ensure to have a trip there once you will love the experience and the food from Ashish 😀

I am visiting JLR Kabini for last 10-12 years when it was 'Jungle Lodge' in true sense with 8-12 accommodations. Trust me, despite of so many premium resorts mushrooming in this area, JLR remains a cut-above-all! It retains the feel of a wildlife resort with abundance of exploration for a nature enthusiasts from river banks to green patch in its property. A sit-out in the cottage itself is relaxing with all modern amenities and courteous staff at your service. Given the highest priced JLR property, it offers the best food, drinks and services among all its properties spread across jungle trails in Karnataka. Rooms are clean and spacious, though you can't escape insects and flying bugs if you keep the doors/ windows open to enjoy fresh air (it's part of natural living). Though, Kabini jungle safari is hugely restricted and deteriorated over a period of time, property makes up for the loss. JLR has highest number of vehicles permitted in tiger reserve and employs well-informed drivers as guide. Food spread is good and tasty with good mix of local and foreign cuisines. Overall, a great place to relax and enjoy nature!

We have stayed at Jungle Lodges before too. This time we found the cottages to be very clean and well maintained. The staff are excellent and very polite and the entire experience from check in to check out is really good. The food is very generous and the chef makes an attempt to get to know the guests. The location is excellent and even if crowded one does not feel it as the property is large and the accommodation is spread out. The safaris, both by jeep and boat, are very good and the staff are knowledgeable and passionate about wildlife and birds. They do a really good job considering the crowds that flock here. All in all it was a pleasant stay.

Stayed for 4 nights in May & experience was pleasant. Special shout out to Mr Aniket (Resort manager as well an amazing naturalist). Kudos to all the staff across housekeeping + restaurant for their smiling service & trying to meet the requirements to the best of their abilities. # Rooms : AC is available only in Maharaja room. The Viceroy rooms are Non-Ac. So you would want to book early to get Maharaja room. You will get standard toiletries in the room but my suggestion is to carry your own body / face wash + shampoo etc. The linen was clean & rooms are spacious. There is a safe in both these rooms. Maharaja rooms give you more privacy. # Restaurant : All meals are served in the restaurant or "Gol Ghar". Food is good & there are number of options for both Veg/Non Veg. There is a separate "Bar" as well in a different building. The cutlery & amenities are basic. Remember this is not a 'luxury' resort. If you have any specific requirement, you can inform the staff in advance. # Safaris : The sole purpose of staying at JLR is to have a more convenient 'safari' experience. JLR guests get a seat preference in Jeep safari versus non JLR guests who are accommodated in mini buses (canters). Non JLR guests do get Jeep safari basis availability & some 'arrangements'. Only disadvantage in safaris here is that the seat capacity is 8-9 persons. So you cant control who will 'share' the jeep with you. If you have people who are novices or with small kids etc, it will definitely spoil your experience (it all depends on behaviour & attitude of your co-occupants). Cant generalize everyone. But you need to be really lucky for all boxes to be ticked . The driver is the 'guide' cum spotter. One thing I liked in the Jeeps here was the overhead roof. Especially helpful to protect against sun & rain. Boat safaris also start from JLR premises. Advisable to do evening ride i/o morning. Safari timings are 6.30 am - 9.30 am and 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. It takes about 15 mins to reach the entry point from JLR. Overall, we had good experience staying at JLR & will definitely return. You need to be realistic in your expectations. The stupendous staff is at hand to cater your requests. The property is ultimately a jungle, so be prepared accordingly. You may have a lizard or beetles or mosquitoes at certain times in the room or open areas. There is nothing alarming in this.

Jungle Lodges is the best place if you want guaranteed maximum safari access to the forests of Kabini/Nagarhole. Safaris are conducted in jeeps and this is a significant plus over the buses. That apart, the person driving is either a naturalist or a naturalist accompanies you in the vehicle. There are more luxurious options in the area but all of them are mostly dependent on Jungle Lodges for the safari into the forest. We were lucky to spot plenty of deer (chital and sambhar), guar (bison), elephants , langurs and macaques, malabar giant squirrel and many varieties of birds including the white bellied woodpecker. The icing was of course, the elusive (or not so elusive in our case) TIGER in each our sojourns into the forests! Truly a remarkable experience. We missed spotting a leopard narrowly - surely that's a reason to head back to Kabini. The lodge itself is comfortable and interestingly, the nights were pleasant outside but can get a tad warm inside. There's no air conditioning in this resort. The room we had had a nice high ceiling but to cool down, we had to cross ventilate and leave the curtains/blinds open. The bath is well appointed though they could have the drain on the same side as the shower (not on the other wall!!!). Food - was quite good and plentiful. Do keep in mind that they try and use as much local produce (if not all local produce) so it tends to be more traditional Indian cuisine that stands out. Food is always fresh and the staff serve with a smile. If you have any dietary restrictions, do let the staff know well ahead of time and they'll do their best to accommodate. The papaya and fresh tandoori rotis and the salads require special mention. We were fortunate to have Muthu (or Mudhuraj - a naturalist) take us into the forest twice and then it was Vijay (also a naturalist) and on the last journey into the forest Mr. Aniket accompanied us. A special shout out to Aniket for patiently answering my son's questions and also giving us so much insight. Remember - this is a forest and this is a safari. While it's great to be able to see the tiger or leopard, there's still so much that you enjoy in the forest by just listening to the sounds, observing the birds, the insects and even the trees and plants and also breathing the clean fresh air. Bring along your patience and experience the forest and wildlife quietly before thinking about taking a picture with your mobile! April/May (pre-monsoon) is the best time to spot the big cats. We'll certainly visit again!n

I have has visited most of the Jungle resorts operated by Karnataka tourism in association with Forest department for years on . But this is the first time I was able to visit their flag ship jungle resort The Kabini River resort , their top of the line resort and rated as one of the top five jungle resort in the world. I arrived at this kabini river resort with my better half on a two nights stay on 19th April, that included daily safaris by jeep and by boat to the Nagaerhole forest with all meals and taxes included under their premium maharaja package . This resort is named after the river Kabini, and was once the Mysore Maharaja’s favourite hunting ground ,as it is located in the southern fringes of the Nagarhole National Park, which abounds with wild life that includes Asiatoc elephants, gaurs, deers ,tigers and leopards. I reached their resort by Road travelling from.Mysore by Taxi a cool one and a half hour drive . On arrival at the reception at 1 pm We were received at the reception with courtesy by none other than Mr Anikethan ,Asst General Mgr . Who runs this resort quite efficiently , and its always in high demand through the year round. Since all bookings in this resort is being made on line in advance with full payment our check in was a breeze and very quick . We were driven in an electric buggy to our Maharaja cottage overlooking the kabini river backwater. We found the cottage to be very luxurious and well maintained with all creature comforts including air conditioning .. We were advised to have lunch immediately at their Gol Ghar restuarant to be ready in time for the first Jeep safari . The food prepared and served with huge spread under the direct supervision of Executive Chef Mr Aashish ,needless to say was very fine and tasty in line with tradition of all their jungle resorts which are also headed by Mr Aashish ,who trains the Sous Chef for other resorts with finesse as he carries a great experience having served in prestigious food chain of restuarants like Barbaque Nation, ITC and Taj group of hotels Post tea at 3 pm ,we were taken in a jeep for a 3 hour safari into the Nagaerhole forest by their capable guide and a naturalist cum jeep driver Mr Ravenna D. I advise readers to see my separate post in trip advisor under things to do my detailed review of Two days safari by jeep and boat . We were lucky to sight most of wild life in this first safari itself that included the famous Asiatic elephants, guars ,mongoose ,huge herds of spotted deer , innumerable number of Peacocks and peahens, monleus and above all a Tiger with 3 cubs. On the second day jeep safari we were not that lucky to spot the rare black panther we hoped to , but we got lucky in the boat safari down the kabini backwater and once again sighted the elephants Crocodile and wide variety of birds like like cormoron ,Spoon bill, Ibis, Egrets , stork , vultures , osprey, river turn darter, lapwing, kingfisher and a few more . But the crowning moment was our being able to see a tiger again from.the boat that took us close to the shore. Today the 21st the morning jeep safari was the best fir we had the company of a female tiger right in front of our jeep as she majestically crossed the road as she went about marking her territory.Sightong barking deer, wild dogs and Samba deers were added bonus. On the whole this trip to kabini river lodge has been exemplary one and a very joyful one . I strongly recommend to my readers across the globe ,to visit this resort if they haven't till now, to experience not only the rich flora and fauna of this region in India and the traditional Ayurvedic spa treatment to envigorate one's tired body mind and muscles but also take back memories of great Indian culinary food served at its best in traditional Indian hospitality, .needless to say in cozy comfort of their good accommodations. Please refer their web page on line for all details .

Its a great property, super serene for sore eyes. We went as a family with a 8 yr old and a 2 yr old. - Had enquired beforehand that the toddler will be allowed on the safari. He was at his best behavior, just babbling as toddler do , but we were told off by a family sitting in the front (apparently tigers run away due to a babbling toddler). - The driver waited for almost an hour near a watering hole as soon as we entered the park, hearing some warning calls. While this was okay with us, to cover the lost time, he drove like a maniac, speeding over 60+ km/hr on dirt roads. I was holding my toddler so tightly to prevent him from literally flying out of the rear seat of the jeep. Our backs hurt from the reckless driving and the family was egging the driver on to go from one watering hole to the other. This was a complete dampener for me. - The naturalist was conspicuous by his silence. Did not educate us on one thing during the long 3 hour drive. The park will be better served by letting that seat be taken by a tourist. So much for the famed naturalists of Kabini. - The driver, naturalist and the co passengers had no regard for ANYTHING other than tigers and leopards. While these are the key attractions, the jungle is a complex eco system and there are varieties of birds, other animals and even trees and flowering plants that are significant , esp to a city dweller. We did not stop to even click photos of dancing peacocks or nursing deerlings. Only paid INR 1500 for a camera, which we could not use as we were only tiger chasing. While I have minor complaints on food etc, the experience was so underwhelming due to the driver, naturalist and the family that came with us. I have visited Ranthambore, Pench, Kaziranga etc and have loved EACH of those experiences. Unhurried ways of experiencing a new world around you and feel the insignificance of your life. This Kabini experience was more like a power play where we are trying to out maneuver the big cats at every point in time. We did spot a leopard, but our enthusiasm had gone down so much that it felt like a meh moment after the Fast and Furious type of chase in the forest. If you live all wild life and love photography, your time, money and efforts are spent better on other safaris in India. For the money we pay, the can getter far superior experience in other parks in India. I must thank Kabini wildlife (you can look up on Facebook) who was kind enough to book the trip for us during peak season.

The hype of Kabini river lodge fulfills some expectations and doesnt fulfill others. But being a property of karnataka tourism, its credit worthy for maintaining a standard way beyond the government lodges. The location of the property is on the banks of kabini river...just few kilometres away from nagarhole tiger reserve. Once you enter, it leads to the reception lobby, where they give you a detailed briefing about the place, services etc. We took the maharaja package which had two jeep safaris assured. The room was spacious, well maintained, and situated near the river bank. -The lunch was good and had varieties, but wrong choice of gravies for Veg. But the taste was okay ( slightly bland). -The dinner was not great and the pepper rasam served for lunch was repeated again for dinner which was not acceptable. The chinese dishes werent kept hot. The barbeque session hosted serves three types of non veg but only pineapple, capsicum and carrot in veg??. -The breakfast again was a poor selection of dishes ( Uppitu, masala vada, pongal, masala dosa and eggs to order). The masala dose wasnt served instant...instead took too much time to reach our tables which again resulted in dissapointment. Overall the food felt like there are a lot of varieties but mismatched. And a place where they can afford 3 non veg dishes, atleast 2 veg dishes and starters need to be included to enjoy a wholesome meal.
