Detailed Reviews
At the first glimpse, Deodar Manor takes you back in 1900s to a quaint bungalow tucked away on a small hill . Our first view was in late evening with sun setting over the snow clad Pirpanjal mountain ranges , bon fires getting lit up and a cozy home awaiting to give us warm hug.
The home (Even though it is a heritage bungalow it has a homely feel) is kept super clean, decorated tastefully and uniquely. They have a good collection of books related to Himachal Pradesh.
Hanut is a excellent conversationalist, the staff courteous and the cooks provide home cooked , fresh , non spicy hot meals. I do hope they start a Veg Barbecue as well along with the non-veg one.
The rooms are big, have adequate heating for the chilling winters, clean bathrooms with all required amenities.
In case you are visiting this place, understand that it is a home and not a hotel. The home has some basic rules like no smoking, low noise levels, closing doors etc which are shared on arrival. It also makes sense , since most guests visiting here would want to experience serenity, reconnecting with self, city life detox and enjoying the Pirpanjal ranges and scenic nature views.
Taking our trekking passion into consideration Hanut suggested us different treks conducted and small trails for us to explore on our own. We took one such snow hike and enjoyed it a lot.
Last but not the least, Hanut's pet dogs are lovable. Roger , the Doberman is the gentlest dog I have ever met, he soothed us with his presence and love. I am missing him already. Rocky , the local breed is the mischievous one . Both greeted us on both days and ensured we are basking in the morning sun with them getting out dose of Vitamin D.
We will be definitely revisiting the home for the books we have left half read, to savour traditional Himachali food prepared by Raju and Charan singh , for the 1000 conversations pending with Hanut, for Roger , Rocky, for the nearby treks and for the mighty Pirpanjal Himalayan Ranges.

We visited this property on 27th March 2021 - 30th March 2021. We were a total of 8 friends. Fortunately this property has 4 bedrooms,so it was a perfect fit for us.
The property is mind blowing. The rooms are well appointed and very tastefully done .
Reminds one of a colonial British era Manor !
The beauty is everything is so well taken care of,the furniture is polished and shining, the brass ware is shining, all the artefacts are carefully placed .
The house reflects that it is well cared for and loved.
Thanks to Hanut and his Mom ,a quiet dignified lady.
The staff comprises of Raju,Charan and Pooja.
They are ever smiling and ready to assist.
Pooja specially came in handy for a foot massage after a 3 hour trek turned to a 7 hour trek!
Location of the property is so beautiful and serene, overlooking snow capped mountains and para gliders passing by.
Staff organises bonfire every evening.
Food is simple and home cooked.
Would request Hanut to look into the food aspect. A little variety in the menu ,with a few additions in the dessert section, something as simple as custard n jelly would really add to the experience at the manor.
The beauty of the place inspired my husband Ashok Mandal to pen a poem which has been shared by Sahana ( thanks to her we visited this property)in a previous post.

2000METERS above sea level you are checking into a Homestay that makes Khajjiaar even more special. The host, a Canadian NRI Sardar Hanut Singh, is a gem of a person. Took care of everything that you might need while staying at his heritage home over 100years old property maintained like a Royal Palace. He makes you feel so cared for and special. Goes out of the way to see you are comfortable to the extent that you feel you own this place. The whole housekeeping and kitchen staff are very polite and prepare food as per your choice. You can yourself go to the kitchen and ask the chef the prepare your favorite dish your way. So much like a home away from home. Every small detail has been looked into to make the guest comfortable. Strong internet and phone connectivity even in such location is a big relief. Loking forward to revisit very soon

We visited Deodar Manor in Khajjiar in October 2020 after being home for almost 7 months. We were looking for something which was off the beaten track and away from the crowds. Our stay was all that we had hoped for and so much more. What started out as a trekking trip turned out to be a most memorable holiday. Deodar Manor with its old world charm is a gem nestled amongst a deodar forests. It has five well appointed rooms each with a view of the mighty Pir Panjals. The highlight of our stay was the lovely trekking trails which we traversed with Hanut (owner) enjoying the clean clear mountain air and beautiful blue skies. The meals were delicious and reminded us of a home away from home. The deck where we spent a lot of our time soaking in the sunshine has a breathtaking view of the majestic Pir Panjals. The resident pet Roger the friendliest and cutest of all was our constant companion. The evenings started with a lovely bonfire and excellent barbecue and stories that kept us entertained. We had a wonderful time and will surely visit again. Deodar Manor is the place to be in if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax.

If you are looking for clean and enriching accommodation while experiencing the best that Khajjiar views have to offer, then this is the heritage stay I would strongly recommend. The manor is well maintained, both inside as well outside, with lots of timeless pieces decorating the mantle in the house, a gorgeous porch with mountain views, and offers total calm. Travelled with a toddler who had a wonderful time exploring the open spaces around the manor. The hygienically prepared food especially when one could get home-cooked meals for kids. The serene location is the biggest plus point. It's at a walking distance from the lake and meadows; yet cut off from the crowds. The staff's, as well as the host's hospitality, made the stay very inviting. I would love to revisit for a longer stay and highly recommend the Bungalow.

The location of the property is its USP. Amazing views of snow capped mountains bang opposite the property with paragliders completing the frame so perfectly! The peace with melodious birds chirping around while inhaling that fresh mountain air is unparalleled. Our room was basic yet v.spacious with amazing views & a connected front deck/common seating area to soak in the valley. The meadow & Khajjiar lake is walking distance from the property but I won’t advice anybody to visit in winters as the grass of the meadow is all brown & not that lush green as seen in pix on d net. U might get a different more beautiful white frame though, if u get lucky with snow, which we cudnt witness but again with snow comes other challenges of immobility. The caretaker Raju was of great help in giving directions to the property to making us comfortable. Roger the Doberman guard dog of the property is a sweetheart! Food we liked in the nicely done dining area with peaceful Buddhist chants flowing in the background! The downsides now..Despite an advanced booking, the host of the Homestay was neither in the property nor tried to connect over phone courtesy sake, so the essence of having the host share his experiences & knowledge abt the local area etc. over tea or at bonfire was majorly missing. It is an essential part of the experience especially while choosing a homestay over a hotel. Lastly, the rooms definitely needs oil heaters instead of the dry blower outdated heaters. Despite having 2 heaters on for hours in our room on request (as we were the only guests in the property) the room was still cold & the bed never could warm up all night with those blower heaters. As a result we woke up with sore throats & a very unpleasant/uncomfortable night. The basic coir mattress needs an immediate upgrade please. We would have definitely stayed another night following the generous offer by host (as conveyed to the caretaker) to reduce tariff for additional night, only if the heating was proper & if the host was available for some insightful interactions.

Dear 752arpitt, Thank you for choosing to stay with us. Glad to know that you liked the location, views and the fresh mountain air. I appreciate your feedback in terms of getting the mattresses changed. This was the first winter when we opened, typically we are closed during winter and moving forward we will be closed for the winter. Thrilled to know that you enjoyed Roger's company. I understand that the blowers can make the air dry, but they have proved to be much more effective in terms of heating the rooms. The option of oil heaters is there, and as per Raju that option was offered to you. Raju went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that extra blankets/comforters were provided to you. A bonfire for you was made available starting 4pm in the evening, going all through the late hours during your stay. It's just basic knowledge that in winters the meadow is not lush green, for that matter its not lush green anywhere in the winter time at this altitude. Raju informed that the reason you did not extend your stay was snow, despite a forecast of snow the day you were leaving. And for the record, there was heavy snow just the day you left. The primary reason/ essence for guests to visit Deodar Manor and that includes a vast majority of our repeat guests is the Mountains and it's certainly not to have a chat with me. I respect the privacy of my guests, and I don't like to be intrusive. You are here to enjoy the mountains, that is the essence for us. We can only do so much. Raju, who was your attendant and is like family to me, has vast knowledge in terms of what there is to do. While we are a homestay, it is not possible for me as the owner to always be present on the property. Our staff, Raju is thoroughly knowledgable about the local area and he is like family. I am sure that Raju would have gladly given you all the information that you needed. With warm regards, Hanut Bal

Posting this this review really very late. Stayed here as a couple for 2 nights from 25Dec2017 to 27Dec2017.
The property was old, maintained and clean but wasn't cozy considering the kind of winter in dec end. We were given just one room heater(& not really powerful), and were denied extra heater even though it was freezing cold at night and we were really uncomfortable. Proper heating and insulation will really help guests, as we ended up sick in the first leg of our Himachal trip.
The rooms are basic.
The beauty of this place lies in its extraordinary location with panoramic views of Pir Panjal range. The bonfire at night with absolutely no noises around is a beautiful experience.
The food was very basic homestyle and lacked quality, which is ok because i knew what i was getting into. I do not know about now but there was no dormitory option available for driver at the property then and he had sleep in the car outside the property which was a scary experience for him as he encountered a bear in the night.

Dear VikramO312, Thank you for sharing your feedback after 6 years. We take great pride in the service and facilities we offer at our hotel and I sincerely apologize that we were not able to deliver the experience that we espouse. We provide the option of a blower or an Oil heater (with the largest number of heating fins) and cannot have 2 rooms heaters in one room because that could cause a power failure. Our rooms have have solid wooden ceilings which provide good insulation unlike concrete. In addition, we always provide our guests with extra blankets/comforters and hot water bottles to keep the feet warm. In addition we now provide electric blankets too. We do not provide accommodation to drivers, something that is clearly stated in our House Rules when you book, that said we are always happy to suggest accommodations for drivers at an inexpensive and yet nice homestay that is located very close us. This option was given to you. A vast majority of our regulars] guests use this option for the staff/ drivers. We offer home cooked meals, and source our produce from local vendors at Chamba. Should you wish to discuss the issue in person, please feel free to reach out to me at your convenience. Sincerely, Hanut Bal

Visiting a place during covid times makes us rethink about our decision so many times, but trust me staying in Deodar Heritage was a blessing. The staff is supremely caring and super cautious for cleaning and sanitizing things. The view and food is amazing, no other hotel can beat that. It’s a wonderful place to rejuvenate yourself. Our decision of staying in Khajjiar instead of Dalhousie was perfect.

Many bookings and cancellations after, we finally managed to reach Hanut's abode, The Deodhar Bungalow. We had a three night booking at the place. I had a lingering concern about the duration of our stay as three days at Khajjiar could turn out to be an overkill.
The serpentine Mountain Road with the overflowing horde of vehicles had already made us super exhausted. Coupled with the concern I had mentioned earlier, I was not expecting much from this visit.
All these misgivings were turned on their head the instance we stepped into the Bungalow. We were received by Mr Hanut Singh, the owner of this property, Mr Govind, the attendant, Mr Raju, the Chef and Roger their Canine companion.
While Mr Hanut and Govind guided us to our room, Raju asked us for our meal preferences. Since we went on a weekday the homestay was reasonably empty and we had a choice between the ground and first floors as also between two adjacent rooms on the floor.
Even as we entered the room we were treated to an amazing view of the Dhauladhar ranges. A carpet of deodar trees cascaded down the face of the range.
The walls of the room as well as the common area were adorned with paintings and artefacts which had been religiously handed over as family heirlooms over a few generations which speaks volumes about the care and effort that has been invested into the preservation of the family legacy.
The layout of lunch was announced and we two famished souls dashed to the dining hall. The first morsel that went down our throat took us back to our homes. A no-frills delicious meal.
The balcony was the perfect place for a cup of steaming chai sweetened with the verdant view of the mountains ahead. A short walk across the woods adjoining the Bungalow should not be missed.
The place is located very close to Mini Switzerland but in stark contrast to it. It is tucked away amongst the woods, calm and serene providing the perfect get away from the rumbles of urbanity.
At Rs 8500 a night with breakfast included, Deodhar Bungalow is a must stay spot at Khajjar.
To quote Duko " There are two types of Home Stays. Ones that have four Walls and a Roof and the ones that make you feel at Home."

Dear prasannanag1980, Thank you for taking the time to write such a fabulous and kind review. We are so happy to know that you enjoyed all aspects of your stay at Deodar Manor. We have been striving with genuine sincerity to make everyone feel at home here, because really that's what it's all about. Unlike generic hotels where service can be robotic, our intention was to serve with sincerity and have a more deeper connection with our guests than just a check in and check out of a hotel. Thank you for sharing your detailed review, this is what keeps us going. I look forward to welcoming you back. Sincerely with warm regards, Hanut

I booked this homestay after exploring various other hotels in and around Dalhousie/Khajiyar. We reached there late evening and were given a warm welcome by Hanut (the owner) and his two support staff (Manoj and Vishal). It was bit cold and they provided us with tea/coffee and some light snacks. The dinner was just like home food.
The property is maintained really well. The view from this place is breathtaking. I just loved this place as soon as I entered it. Hanut had arranged bonfire on our 2nd day of stay. There was another family who was staying here and they joined us too. Hanuit’s mother prepared food for us on the 2nd day and we just felt at home during our two days stay.
In these Covid times, they had kept the room very clean. The extra bed we had requested for during the booking was kept ready before we entered the room. We were provided with a room heater and an electric kettle.
Hanut was very friendly and kept interacting with us. He gave us options of various treks and we decided to go to Pukhri. He helped us with a local guide who took us to Pukhri via a dense forest. The trek was successful considering the fact that my 2 year old daughter was accompanying me too. The view was breathtaking from the top of the mountain. We had planned to go to Hemkund the next day but dropped the idea as we had little time left. Hanut had recommended this trek but we will visit this place next time when we visit Khajiyar.
I strongly recommend people visiting Khajiyar to stay at Deodar Manor. Hanut and the staff were very approachable. They allowed us in the kitchen to prepare food for our daughter. I wished I had planned for more days at this place. I will surely visit this place again soon.

No.... There are'nt AC rooms but they have coolers.
Yes, no accessibility issues.
1) Deodar Manor is a heritage bungalow with 6 rooms, so it’s best to book well in advance
2) Jan and Feb is when there is snow . During this time we are selective about who stays here because there are several factors to consider . Please call Hanut Bal or send an email regarding this
3) yes there are room heaters
4) Flight to Amritsar is best since its closest and most convenient. Chandigarh airport is much further away in terms of distance
please mail the owner directly, and bargain hard.
