Travellers' Choice
The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. A family run business now into its 3rd generation of raft guides, River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you.

My partner and I attended a wedding at the lodge. We had a great day and night, with an excellent dinner and breakfast the next day. The following day we went rafting - such a great day of fun. The equipment kept us warm even on a cold winter raft trip. Beautiful location. Great people.

My visit to River Valley was a surprise from my lovely husband of 43 years. He had been to River Valley with work mates 10 years previously and had often said how good it was. Good, is an understatement because the whole experience is extremely good. The commitment to making you feel really welcome comes from the whole family from the minute you drive in. The Riverside room was so comfortable, especially the heated floor in the bathroom. The food was extremely good and the fresh produce a real treat. Everything home made down to the spicey sauces. Yum. Sitting around the big fire pit with a wine was very easy to get used to. Then came the grade 5 rafting. What an exciting few hours, and it was a privilage to go down that beautiful river. Next time I would like to do the Grade 3 downstream, apparently its extremely good. If you just want to be lazy, the petanque and outdoor chess right beside the river is very relaxing. River Valley Lodge is a tribute to the whole family who own and run this very special piece of NZ.

Fantastic from first contact to farewell. What an amazing, highly personalised, experience with Nicola and her gorgeous horses in a stunning location. The unforgettable three days of riding alone would have been enough for a glowing review, but the wonderful lodge staff and outstanding food made this stay at River Valley truly magic.

We had the most amazing experience with these guys . From the start of the email exchanges these guys went above an beyond . Staff are just amazing and made us feel like we was at home . The organically grown food that went into all Home cooked meals was outstanding . The Cabins and facilites were the bomb , comfy beds , clean and everything that you needed was to hand . These guys rock . Felt like we had known them all for years . The rafting was memories for life and our guides were so knowledgable always felt we were in very safe hands all the way through . So many Laughs an Varns and we cannot wait to come back here again . Love love love this place , actually one of my fav places in NZ XXX
