Opposite the beach where you can sit and watch the sunset. Sounds idyllic. The hotel is very central and great for exploring the region. The rooms are comfortable although they don't have ensuites with toilets only. Can be quite a walk to the baths and dining room after a long days walk. The food and service are excellent with no...

Opposite a sandy beach, on very quiet side-road which leads to remarkably empty rocky coastline. The sandy beach is ringed with concrete in the Japanese way, but is great for a refreshing dip. Hotel is fine, neither better nor worse than would be expected for the money. We did not eat there, more is the pity, but had take-out sushi...

Arafune Resort is a small sized hotel in the very quiet town of Tawara, 30 minutes by bus to the west of Katsuura. The attraction here is the beautiful coastal walk to the east of the hotel along the Arafune coast where you will see fishermen diving for lobster and abalone. The walk along a paved road right along the...

I've now stayed here three times - most recently with 8 friends travelling from Australia. First, I love the coast in this region and found a great 3-4hr loop to walk along the coast and then through camellia and azalea forest. Secondly, the people here are so helpful and friendly and seem genuinely pleased to see and serve guests. The...

My parents and husband and I stayed one night at Arafune Resort on our way from Yunomine Onsen to Tanabe via the coast road. In nicer weather (we were there on a rainy day in March) it would definitely be worth stopping for a couple of nights. The hotel is on the beachfront, near an old fishing village that we...

A converted town hall doesn't sound like much of a hotel, but this is a beauty! With rooms looking over a sandy beach, small harbour and fabulous rocky coast that is crawling with crayfish. Comfortable room on 3rd floor with ensuite Western style. This is called an Oceanfront Community Resort and apart from fishing, seems to be the main game...

Good: Supremely quiet. Some of the freshest seafood I have ever had: e.g live ear-abalone served on a small clay stove at the table. The ryokan style room was small, but of fair quality. Sea-side: I could see and hear the ocean from my window. Lovely small(tiny)-town charm and friendliness. Bad: Boring: small number of visitors, fewer number of exciting...
