I was quite surprised at how tourist-friendly this shukubo was. The counterweight was of course the fact that it feels more a hotel than a temple, ruining the eventual expectations of a spiritual atmosphere. It was very easy to find, as it’s barely a throw of stone from the bus stop and the bus runs in sync with the arrival...

we just returned from a couple of nights at Kumagaiji and enjoyed it immensely. the room was big and quiet and not next to anyone else so it was very quiet. The food given the restrictions they have was very good. we had breakfast and dinner and it was a privilege to be able to go to prayers at 6.30am...

I felt my stay in Koyasan overall was overrated and anti-climatic which was disappointing. Maybe it was the rain. Maybe it was the difficulty getting there and my problems with the transportation people on the way. I thought the cemetary would be more of a forest in the mountains - although still a wonderful experience to be there especially at...

The accommodation in this temple looks pretty new, it's all in great condition and we were pretty impressed at how well equipped it was. we think it must have been recently refurbished or renovated? Considering this is a working temple, the facilities are great, the rooms are spacious enough, and the balcony with two comfy chairs on was an added...

I booked a room at Kumagaiji, but had to cancel it because of change of plans. I'm writing this review just to say that I emailed the place regarding using their onsen and showers while having a tattoo and they said it's not a problem. The email communication with Kumagaiji has been quick and efficient. Again - i eventually did...

After reading so many positive reviews, let me debunk some of the myths that I read. The monks were not friendly to us at all, they seemed to almost be annoyed that we were there - they definitely do not all speak english, only the odd one or two young monks could speak very broken english. When we first arrived,...

We stayed here for two nights as a mother daughter couple in May 2016. This temple stay was a highlight of our japan trip. We were warmly welcomed to the temple by our lovely host Mariko (and Aysay) who explained temple protocol and etiquette and made our stay very comfortable. The temple location is very convenient and central. There is...

We had a memorable experience at Kumagaiji. -The monks are super friendly, attentive and they speak english. -We stayed in an authentic japanese room, (one room for sleeping, one room for eating). There was a kotatsu! (table covered by a futon), a heater and free fast wifi. -The futons were warm and really comfortable. -The food was super abundant, extremely...

Great experience in a beautiful temple where you live with monks. They prepare everything for you (food and futons) and you even can participate to the morning office with them, a really nice experience for us (not used to any spiritual life). The diner and breakfast (vegetarian) are included in the price, and I have to say that it was...

Our stay in the temple Kumagai-ji was a truly amazing experience! The temple is located right at the top of the mountain, in the last bus stop station, just a 5 minute walk to the Oku-no-in Cemetery. You get to stay in a huge room, we picked one with a view to the garden. The room is divided in two,...
