We had a two night stay at Saizen-in at Koyasan and loved our stay. We selected a garden view room that was very spacious and was actually three rooms joined together for our family of four - we had a sleeping room, dining room and lounge room each with its own heater. It was very chilly during our stay in...

If you are staying in a Buddhist temple on a sacred mountain, don't expect a hotel experience. That said, I strongly recommend it as an excellent interlude if you are having a busy holiday. The temple had hot, deep baths, simple rooms with futons (which one of my group struggled with as they need soft mattresses) and delicately prepared vegetarian...

We and our three children loved the stay at this temple. The rooms are very spacious and beautiful in a traditional way. The bathroom facilities are very modern and clean. The vegetarian food was made with lots of love and very traditional. The morning prayer was a memorable experience.

We had a lovely one-night stay in Saizen-in. It was 10000 yen each including dinner and breakfast. The place is exceptionally peaceful, and we stayed in a beautifully decorated room. We went to an introduction to meditation at a nearby monastery, before dinner back at Saizen-in at 17:30. You have a choice of dinner at 17:00 or 17:30. It was...

Koyosan is a wonderful place to visit and the temple staff at Saizen-in make you very welcome. The vegetarian food is good and the lodgings both beautiful and comfortable. The trip to Koyosan by public transport is not very long from Osaka but fascinating, including a rail trip through the hills with steep forests on both sides and ending in...

Saizenin has great location (Danjo Garan just across the road), clean room (on par with prestige hotels), friendly service (I believe that they did their best with English) and above average vegetarian meals. All good. It's just that .... They charged too much. I've been to Japan six times and stayed in Sheraton, Hilton and the like as well as...

I stayed at the Saizen-in during my trip in April 2015. I was not sure what to expect of temple accommodation but I was keen to try it out. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Our room was in the traditional Japanese style but looked almost brand new. The toilets and bathing area were again a shared space in...

We stayed in Saizen-in for just one night and enjoyed the traditional interior of the temple. In the beginning we were a bit reluctant to the vegetarian meal, but it was really ok. That being said, bringing some extra food is not a luxury. During breakfast and lunch you are being serviced by monks, probably young monks who are in...

I stayd two nights and everything was good. The vegan breakfasts and dinners were tasty and very diverse, the exception being the tempura on the first evening which was not that good. The monks were very kind and helpful. I slept very well on the futon, the Japanese bath was very relaxing in the evening after long hikes through the...

Koyosan is definitely off the beaten path but Saizen-in was friendly and welcoming. Be prepared for the whole traditional Japanese experience: sleeping on tatami floors under a futon, three different sets of slippers, a very tiny public bath, and sitting on the floor for a rice and pickled veggies breakfast. It was wonderful. We were surprised by two things: a...
