The Kanyo Hotel is a lovely, old style Japanese traditional hotel, offering Japanese tatami mat sleeping configurations as well as western bed options as well. Opt for the traditional tatami beds for a great experience. Our room also had an amazing 5 star view of the ocean, and the nearby town that was devastated in the 2011 tsunami. The true...

We stayed at the hotel last weekend and the area which was stricken by the devastating tsunami in 2011. Part of our trip involved work so we had the opportunity to experience the hotel from both the business and tourist's perspective. The conference room and facilities were solid, and the meeting room had an amazing view of the coast line....

Stayed here for an students exchange visit for the Kizuna project. The hotel is beautiful and affords a grand view of the Pacific Ocean that is worth waking up early in the morning to see. They restaurant upstairs also has a good view and good food, although the lines can be a little too long at times. The rooms are...

I selected this hotel to hear the real story of Tsunami. This hotel has the tsunami devastated area bus tour with storyteller. It was about 1 hour drive, but I could hear what happened after the 3/11. I can't experience it at usual life. The room has enough area and one bedroom. Hotel has 2 onsen, 1 has open-air bath...

One of the more beautiful places I have ever stayed--remarkable views, beautiful rooms with a combination tatami and western style bedroom. Magnificent outdoor onsen, and fantastic buffet style dinners with some of the best sashimi I have had in Japan. Moreover, a great place to spend your money, since the hotel owner and staff worked tirelessly to restore the community...

Emily P-san, Thank you for your nice comments. I am working in this hotel, but I believe our sashimi is one of the best in Japan as freshness. Our place is being recovered after tsunami, therefore I hope many of people come to see how we are getting better than past years. I hope to see you again. Thanks again.

While the lobby is welcoming and the staff attentive and friendly, the rooms leave something to be desired. We were shown to a room at the back of the hotel with a view of the road and which reeked of cigarette smoke, even though I had asked for a non-smoking room. The staff member dealt with this really well and...

During our stay in the tsunami-devastated Miyagi prefecture, we stayed at the Hotel Kanyo for one night. The hotel is located just outside the tsunami hit area of Minamisanriku, but the hotel is intact and fully operational. We stayed as part of a business trip, for one night. The hotel itself was lovely, very clean and everything is shiny. The...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This hotel, set against a backdrop of blue skies and sun, is in superbly natural surroundings. Located on the edge of Shizugawa Bay, our hotel offers excellent seafood cuisine and the tranquil atmosphere of the sea. Our staff were witness to the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami. In order that memories of the disaster not be forgotten, we operate a "storyteller's bus" around the disaster-ravaged area. We take you on an hour-long trip to observe the devastated area, while our staff talk about their recollections of the event. Reservations are required so book early. ... more   less
