Stayed here for 1 night only before moving into rental house for family holiday. This place is very traditional and exactly what we were looking for. The onsen is great and the breakfast in the morning even better. Service from staff was excellent too. Certainly recommend this place and would stay here again.

Hard to top what has already been said . Before I speak about the Ryokan itself , the host family are simply incredible.. Hardly any wonder that Toshi-san won a manager of the year award last year , not only locally but globally. He is the manager but his whole family is involved - sister co - manages and mother...

If you're after THE greatest host, Toshi-San and his team and family provide INCREDIBLE hospitality so look no further! Hakuba onsen is right in the middle of a ski to door village with all amenities close by- ski shuttles, restaurants, convenience stores. The traditional rooms and beds are warm, cozy and impecible. The breakfasts and dinner is scrumptious. This place...

Our group had a wonderful Japanese experience and ski holiday in the ryokan. The futons were really extremely comfortable, which surprised me. The breakfasts and dinners were amazing, staff were very friendly and spoke English well. We're are planning a second visit this year and are booking the rest of our spring holiday around dates we can fit into Shirouma-so.

We had a wonderful stay! From the pickup at the station, our host Toshi-San, was full of information, happily answered ALL our many questions. Our traditional rooms were perfect for our experience, and when we finished skiing for the day, the natural onsen was the best tonic. After a six day stay, we were very sad to leave, as the...

My husband and I originally chose this ryokan based on its location (close to ski fields and eating/drinking establishments) and also because we wished to experience a traditional style Japanese inn - we weren't disappointed on both accounts. The ryokan is a 5 minute walk to Hakuba's largest ski-field, Happo. If we didn't feel like walking we could jump on...

Shiroumaso was the icing on the cake of our ski holiday in Hakuba. Our host, Toshi, and his family are treasures. Their English is excellent and they made us very welcome and comfortable for our 6 day stay. Our tatami room was spacious, clean and comfortable and had a beautiful view to the mountains. We had a toilet and handbasin,...

This cosy and authentic family-owned Japanese Ryokan is an excellent choice for a winter retreat at a Onsen Ryokan with a ski or snowboarding. The hotel is a very traditional "ryokan" style so be prepared for a very Japanese experience all the way from the facilities, sleeping on Tatami to communal bath and onsen! At the meanwhile the owner Toshi-san,...

This is a magnificent Ryokan, and not a hotel. It is a wonderful place to experience traditional Japan - from the rooms, with tatami floors, and futons, to the delicious and authentic Japanese meals - the Sukiyaki is 'oishi desu'. The natural onsen is rejuvenating at the end of the day too. When I travel I love to experience the...

I stay in this hotel each time I come to Hakuba - it's like a second home. This year, stayed in an upgraded room with couch and traditional Japanese tatami/futon. Onsen bath excellent, food good, staff friendly and helpful. Unlike many places in Hakuba, it seems to have kept it's old-style Japanese charm. Can't think of a single thing to...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Resting at the base of Hakuba Happo-one ski area, Shirouma-so is a modern Japanese ryokan (inn) combining both traditional wood and modern Japanese "Wa" architectural styles, resulting in a creative and beautiful design. From the entrance featuring wooden pillars and beams preserved from the building's agricultural beginnings in the Edo period, to rooms with large windows and views of the northern Alps, you can relax, place yourself in the hands of Nature, and refresh yourself in the warmth of this historical ryokan. Shiroumaso is appreciated by many guests as a convenient base for skiing, snowboarding, or the numerous outdoor activities of the summer months, as well as a hub for touring Shinshu, Azumino, and other regions within Nagano. ... more   less
