Visited in March 2015 : Good experience and liked a lot the outdoor Onsen and massive snow surrounding us. Could not enjoy the foods and the rice was just okay. The heating floor in our room was too hot at night and the air was extremely dry, worse, you cannot open the windows to get fresh air! No one at... More

I actually visited Kaikake Onsen in January 2015 but since this month is not the option list anymore, I had to choose January 2016. But anyway, I had the best time with my boyfriend visiting this place. We did not stay in the hotel as we only had a day trip in Yuzawa, but we were so lucky to find... More

Kaikake is a fairly large, traditional wooden ryokan, situated off the main road in a river valley in the mountains. It enjoys an unspoilt setting, apart from the electricity pylons that stride across the valley). It is 20 minutes by taxi (5000 yen) and 30 minutes by bus (hourly) from Echigo Yukawa station, which is in turn 90 minutes from... More

Oh where do I start?!! Perhaps the quaint little bridge that crosses a rocky river to this immaculate traditional ryokan, deep in the mountains in the Niigata region. I almost don't want to tell anybody about this place and keep it all to myself!! With exquisitely warm hospitality, we were offered hot tea and a delicious little sweet treat on... More

This is 1 in 100 top secret onsens in Japan recommended by the Japan Association for Top Secret Onsen Preservation. It's history dated back more than 100 years. It is welknown for curing eye diseases like dry eyes in elderly people. However, the spa is only about 37C, much lower temperature than spas in Japan in general. There are different... More

Although seems geographically far, but Echigo-Yuzawa station is only 1:15hrs from Tokyo station by shinkansen. At the Onsen, we were lucky to be greeted by the owner himself ,Mr Hasegawa. He is the fifth generation owner of this place, and the recorded history of the onsen goes back more than 700-years. We then shown to our room, which is just... More

I visited from Singapore thanks to my friend's recommendation. Location - Was just only 1 & half hours from Tokyo station to this Kaikake hot spring through Echigo-Yuzawa station and seemed to be very very close by bullet train. The friendly gentle staff picked us up at the nearest bus stop. Ambience - Quiet and absolutely beautiful full of changing... More

I have traveled to many hot springs and hotels all around the world, and I can truly say that Kaikake onsen is one of the top choices for me. It's extremely close from Tokyo station by shinkansen train and I was able to go here casually just over the weekend. Easily accessible by bus from Echigo-Yuzawa, this place will give... More

The onsen is pretty easy to get to. From Echigo-Yuzawa East Entrance, u take the bus bound for Naeba, getting off at Kaikake Onsen bus stop from where u will be picked up. U can make use of the tourist info centre at Echigo-Yuzawa JR Stn to call ahead to inform the Ryokan the time of the bus u will... More

We went to Kaikake onsen in March last year, taking a bus from outside Echigo-Yuzawa station for about 25 min, and staff from the ryokan picked us up by the bus stop. From there it was about five minutes by car down a very steep, narrow winding road to the valley. This added to the feeling of going somewhere secluded... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This is certainly a 'Hitou' hidden inn, but comparatively it is easy to get here. It takes 80 minutes taking the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo Yuzawa, and from the front of that station, takes for 20 minutes towards Mikuni Pass (Mikuni Touge) and you will arrive at the entrance of Kaikake Onsen. You will be introduced to the refreshing scenery of the Kiyotsu River and Mt. Yagio, surrounded by a forest of pine trees. The fresh green foliage that surrounds us leaves us feeling reinvigorated and refreshed. Over the bridge, you will be able to see Kaikake inn, with the Katsusa River running nearby. Only one building stands here, a relatively neat and trim inn, bright and dynamic, yet with a heavy and humid atmosphere of antiquity and tradition, faintly reminding us of the traditional importance of onsen as a means of remedial therapy. It is said that Kenshin Uesugi, who was a famous military commander often soaked in this spa with his soldiers to relieve his stress and fatigue. The views of the early morning with birds singing beyond the mist, and the sunsets are equally beautiful. This spa is said to be beneficial for cataracts, and this inn often hosts long stay visitors. Finaly, the carefully prepared dishes and the warm and homely hospitality creates a wonderful stay at this peaceful inn ... more   less
