The Tulip & Thistle was everything a traveler would hope to find in a B&B: hosts that make you feel like you are a part of the family, beautiful home, large, spacious, sparkling clean rooms and bath, comfortable bed, lovely grounds. Ann and Larry have achieved the ideal blend for a B&B. They were right there when needed and unobtrusive when not. They encourage lively conversation among the guests and the sitting rooms are arranged to foster conversation. We had all gone our separate ways for dinner and met back at the B&B afterwards, to share our experiences until bedtime. Breakfast was another occasion for more good talk--about three hours worth!--and everyone went on their way with warm hugs and a feeling that we'd love to be back. Ann and Larry remember names and preferences, and we were sorry to have to be on our way. This was our best experience in Nova Scotia. I would recommend the Tulip & Thistle to anyone wanting a home away from home feeling when they travel.

There were many positives, notably the friendliness of the hosts. Equally pleasant was the breakfast which was a large one and very tasty. The bed was comfortable. The room was not as updated as others B &B's. The bathroom and shower was so tiny, I could barely fit in - let alone move to shower. I am a petite person. The other rooms may have had larger bathrooms. It was fine for a night.

stay 7 sept: comment by 2 seniors having 1 week round Nova Scotia:

THE GPS with an entry for Truro could not find it
We had dinner in another town and phoned for location

We liked the clean large room and the friendliness of Ann and Larry
It was raining so did not venture into the garden
The breakfast was copious - my husband enjoyed the "surprise" of Eggs Benedict, but my pancakes seemed tough {?}

This B & B is not in Truro! Really, not even close. It is about 15 minutes away. At check in I met the owners and inquired where Truro was and he noted "it was just a few miles away". We wanted to be in Truro to get up early to see the tide changes. I said I would check with my wife who was in the car. The owner got very upset and charged towards me yelling loudly at me and demanding that I had to stay here tonight!!! (This behavior may explain why there were no other visitors here this evening too) He kept screaming that he would charge me even if I did not stay. So although the location may have been a slight issue the totally out of control owner was enough to convince me I would not spend the night here. I have never experienced anything like this before. He actually did charge my credit card for a night that I did not stay there. I really do not understand how this B & B is so highly rated, but if you decide to visit here beware of the owner.

Response from tulipsthistle, Owner at Tulips and Thistle Bed & Breakfast
Responded 3 Sept 2015
You contacted us on the day of your original reservation and asked if we could change the booking to the next day. Although you were within our 72 hour cancellation policy we did not charge for that night but re booked for the following day When you arrived on the new chosen day you commented on our B & B not being in Truro proper. In all our printed and digital advertising we make it very clear that we are located approximately 7Km from the centre of Truro.. I am a bit confused by the rating of 2 you gave us for room cleanliness since you were only ever at the front entrance. You never gave us a chance to show you the room. You said you were going to discuss staying with us with your wife and let us know . Instead you drove away. Contrary to your statement that there were no other guests your reservation fully booked us. If there had been all that yelling and screaming, which you mentioned in your review, our other guests would no doubt have come down to find out what all the commotion was about.

I had a slightly different experience from other reviews posted here but let me begin with the positives. The hosts are nice, the bed was comfortable, the towels were nice and the breakfast was delicious.
I stayed in the Mississauga Room. I was disappointed in the room ambiance which seemed very dated. The walls were a powder blue and wall hangings brown and orange. The TV was the size and thickness of computer monitors in the 80s. There was a well thumbed copy of a 2006 magazine in the room and it just seemed like little effort had been made to update things in years.
Unfortunately the temperature adjustment for the room was in another guest suite so I had to ask my hosts to adjust the temperature for me. This was embarrassing because although they were very nice about it, it took 3 tries before I was comfortable and I felt very awkward having to disturb them each time rather than just adjust it myself.
These concerns may not be problems to others travellers but I wanted to share my experience.

We stayed in Truro on our last night in NS since it was close to the airport. Ann and Larry were the consummate hosts. Within minutes we felt like we were visiting a friend's house. The had us and other guests enjoying our evening in the sitting room with great conversation that continued thru out our stay. The room was so very clean. In St Louis MO they have a term "Scrubby Dutch" to indicate an especially clean house and this was a place that meets that criteria. Breakfast was unbelievably great. The blueberry pancakes were fantastic and the country breakfast kept me in good shape for a whole day of travel. They indicate that they often have return business, and we hope to jpin that group.

Trip Advisor reviews led us to The Tulips and Thistle B&B and we could not have made a better choice. We have stayed in over 50 B&Bs and this one is right at the top!
Some folks, when told we were headed to Truro for 3 nights, questioned our choice of Truro. We wanted a base to walk and hike the Bay of Fundy area and Truro seemed to fit the bill and Trip Advisor Reviews made Tulips and Thistle look like a great spot for that. Five Islands and Economy Mountain provided some great hikes and another daytrip north to the Pictou/Caribou area was worth the drive and walks.
Ann and Larry welcome you with a request that guests make themselves at home -- and they really mean it. The house is most charming, the breakfasts wonderful, and the hospitality simply outstanding! Ann and Larry treat you like long lost friends. They do evertything at the B&B themselves and they do it sooo well. Immaculate rooms, comfy common areas and an overall warm feeling await travellers
Larry is a native of the area and can lead you to hidden gems for walks/hikes or just sightseeing.
Located 45 minutes from Halifax Airport, it's a great jumping off point to Prince Edward Island or Cape Breton as some of the guests were doing. But we enjoyed it where it was and for what it was, simply as fine a B&B as you can hope to visit!
We will be back!

Well.. after writing a scathing review of the place we stayed prior to arriving at the T&T (In Wolfville), it is a pleasure to go the complete opposite way and tell you how wonderful Anne and her B&B is.

Now.. this is how a B&B/inn should be run. Even though this is her home.. you are welcomed into it fully with no pretentiousness and no "take off your shoes" attitude.

Ann is there to greet you and welcome you to her home... the common areas were wonderfully decorated and encouraged you to sit and relax. Ann offered suggestions on where to eat only after you reviewed the stack of menus and narrowed down your choices (so as not to direct you without your input!). Our dinner choice was wonderful and we were so happy.

Breakfast is at a communal table and is a great way to meet the other travellers.. we had a long journey ahead of us and had to get up early so we ate alone.. but what a wondeful meal. Eggs, fruit, toaste.. etc all made fresh.

Upon leaving, ann offered suggestions on where to eat and what to see along our next leg of the trip... and wished us well on our way.

It was like night and day from our last experiance and the cost was much much less too..

Do not hesitate to stay at this wonderful place... we couln't have been happier and look forward to staying there again - and perhaps for a longer time!

We absolutely loved this B&B - Ann and Larry couldnt have been nicer or more accomodating. If possible, try and stay in the Master Suite, its divine with its own little balcony and a hot tub.

Great breakfasts and wonderful nice people....E.S., Florida

We used a booking site. The cancellation policy was explained in their site before final payment. I do not remember the exact details but it was refundable up until a few days prior to the stay. The B&B always answered my emails and were super friendly if you reach out to them.
