The Dog & Bear is in the lovely market town of Lenham, the accommodation has clearly been updated as everything in the room was spotless and well decorated, The bed was extremely comfortable although we had to ask for extra pillows but this was dealt with immediately by a very efficient lady on reception.
The bar area is very comfortableI but I must say it was extremely quiet throughout the hotel. Social distancing was properly observed and hand sanitisers were freely available all around the public areas. The 2 course meal in the evening was very good, we were taken care of by Chrissie in the restaurant area, she was very welcoming, helpful and obviously enjoyed her job.
The bar area closed at 9pm but this was not a problem as we finished our drinks in the charming little courtyard.
Breakfast was excellent although the pot of tea was lukewarm but drinkable.
All in all a lovely stay.
Our room was delightful. A four poster bed in a large room overlooking the village. The room was decorated in calming shades of grey and had all the usual facilities. During the current covid situation toiletries and tea /coffee are available on request rather than being left in rooms.
We had dinner in the restaurant, reduced menu but all that we ordered was delicious. Breakfast was also well cooked & tasty. Would thoroughly reccomend a stay here.
We also clearly hit a very bad evening in the restaurant. We were not in a good position right beside a large family group with very young, "lively" children. We felt we were intruding on their private party. Several items on the already quite short menu were unavailable, apparently due to Covid-19 and being short-staffed. We waited an hour for the starter as the function had priority for food. The waitress did apologise for the wait and the staff seemed to be trying their best in a difficult situation. The steaks we had for the main course were good, however it wasn't the relaxing "gastro pub" dinner we had hoped for and the general atmosphere in the front room we found unpleasant. Having to leave early in the morning we were unfortunately unable to give the restaurant a second chance and sample the included breakfast. A pity, as reading other reviews it sounds good.
Friendly staff and we were surprised at the size and comfort of the room, ( No15 ) in the annex at the rear next to the car park. It has recently been refurbished apparently.
Nice coffee machine and the best rain shower that I've ever used. As another reviewer has stated, the sound insulation of the room is poor but as long as your neighbours aren't too noisy it shouldn't spoil your stay. The room had everything that we needed in it.
The evening meal was good with the exception of my starter of butternut squash on griddle rye bread. The squash was cold, bread not toasted and feta cheese straight from the fridge. Everything else was very nice.
Breakfast was in a very pleasant room with a friendly and helpful waitress.
My wife ordered eggs Benedict which was dissapointing as the bagel wasn't toasted and the bechemel sauce was cold. My Veggie cooked breakfast was nice. Lovely fresh fruit salad was available as were the usual cereals etc.
We did a 13.7 mile walk from the pub, ( they kindly let us leave the car in the car park ), to Leeds Castle and back. We had a nice beer in the bar before journeying home.
A lovely break.
Would we stay again? Yes.
The breakfast was amazing and even offered avocado and poached eggs. Definitely worth a visit. And so cheap!
