They were running out of one of the starters even though we pre booked our meal. When Mine arrived it was frozen in the middle. They changed it. I got mine back just as everyone else on our table were finishing. Main meal. One person on our table had a cold meal. When it came back the vegetables on the table were cold so he had to wait for them to be heated up. Dessert.... Dark chocolate roulade. Either it was very old or overcooked. It was dry and didn't move when you pushed it with a fork. Everyone on our table with that dessert left it. One person said their lemon cheesecake had hardly any lemon flavour. This was all on one table. I don't know about other tables but it can't have only been our table. That being said the staff were very good. The head waiter had it down to an art form. They are lucky to have him. Such a lovely building, wonderful front of house staff but let down by the kitchen. This is the second time I have had a bad experience here. In the summer I was taken for a cream tea there for my birthday and the sandwiches were curling and the cakes were dried up. I wasn't in a position to complain as I was invited. Last year we had a wonderful Christmas party there with amazing food. I take it the kitchen staff has changed. Such a shame

Having first visited in the summer, we thought it would be the perfect trip away for the new year. We checked in on new years day for the one night weekend escape and as last time, our stay was excellent! We got a lovely room, three course dinner, use of the facilities, (we could use the pool the whole day Sunday even after checking out at 11am) breakfast the next day and a treatment with £60 towards it. How anyone can say this is not great value for money is beyond me!!
This time we upgraded to the deluxe room which was much more bigger than the standard rooms and perfectly clean, we even got a balcony with table and chairs. The pool is lovely and clean and the whole area is very relaxing. For my treatment I had the revitalising facial. It was the best facial I have ever had! The treatment area is nice and relaxing, staff are super friendly and the products were of a great quality.
The food was fresh and tasty, great quality and portions were very adequate. Breakfast was amazing! We got a hot breakfast and there was a big spread of cereals/fruits/yogurts/croissants, so much to chose from. The only negatives I have is there was no chicken on the dinner menu (that is my own personal preference, the menu had a good choice I just love chicken!) and that dinner service was very slow. We were one of the first tables for dinner so got seated and served straight away but as it got busier we had to get attention of the waiters to be served and a round of drinks took about 40 minutes to arrive. However, the dining area was lovely and we were taking our time to enjoy our food so it didn't really bother us but we did see other tables getting a quite fed up.
Overall excellent stay and we cant wait to return! Every single member of staff from front of house to the cleaners were very professional, friendly and helpful. After a previous review suggestion racism, I would also like to point out that my partner was very aware he was the only person of colour but he said the service was fantastic and he was treated the same as every other guest!!!!!

What can I say apart from WOW. We were a party of 8 who stayed on NYE for the red and black party celebrations and it really was a fantastic evening. This is our second NYE stay and as a couple we have spent many nights staying at this beautiful country hotel and it never ever disappoints. Mandy and her team of staff are courteous, professional and an asset to the success of the hotel. Our rooms, as always were lovely with beautiful upgraded bathrooms and all amenities one would expect, although we did not have a safe in our room. The Hempstead Suite was beautifully decorated to welcome its guests to the red and black themed evening. We had balloons, crackers and party poppers on the table with a fantastic magician entertaining guests through the sumptuous four course meal. The food was hot, freshly cooked and of an exceptionally high standard. There was a band and disco playing until 1 in the morning with complimentary champagne served at midnight. We really did have a fabulous evening of celebrations and we cannot thank all of the staff enough for their hard work and effort that was put into making this happen. Breakfast is freshly cooked to order and is of a high standard. I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel whether you are celebrating or just want a lovely night away in a hotel that delivers a first class service.

Due to covid, this was a last minute booking, and we went for a spa weekend, which was not cheap but included extra meals and a late stay on sunday.
We rang the hotel before arriving to check accessibilty information, and were told to book the newer section, as it has a lift.
A lovely hotel, an hour from home, and the staff were excellent.
It also had its downsides, e.g. the dinner tables were not properly social distanced, although we were OK. Just saying, profit before safety.
The room we had was an executive suite, and quite nice. The toilet was broken the entire time we were there,as was the key to get into the room an the Sunday afternoon. We were unable to get into the room, and my wife had to run downstairs to get a key whilst I wet myself outside the room.
It is things like this you remember.
The other issue was the food.
The restaurant was quite cheap to eat on the Sunday, about £21? I have not seen the bills.
We were entitled to an evening meal and Sunday lunch as part of our package.
We also ate here on the Friday evening. The food was avant garde, it was OK.
The meal on Saturday night was the same menu, but I did not actually like the start or the main course, and returned these untouched. The free olives were also disgusting.
I ate the bread.
The hotel was great, and they would not charge these meals to the bill.
When we received the bill, the Friday meal was charged in full, the Saturday meal was included in the weekend price.
Enough said. I would not want to revisit this place.

On a plus side, the pool is beautiful.

We have been going to Hempstead House for over 25 years and this was the first place I wanted to visit as I have been shielding since March, and what a pleasure it was, we felt very safe good signage and hand sanitiser every where all staff were friendly as normal but kept to social distance rules. Lunch, dinner and breakfast was first class as was our room and lounges. The new extension to the brassiere is lovely and so were the grounds. What the hotel desperately needs now is old and new customers to pay a visit and make sure this great hotel can afford to stay open for all to enjoy book now you will not be disappointed. Thanks Hempstead House from Tracey and Chris

We decided to visit Hempstead House for Christmas dinner as we never usually eat out on Christmas day. At £85 a head (£50 for children) - we were expecting a better dinner than my Mum's which is very hard to beat. Well let's just say that it failed spectacularly to deliver this.

Firstly, the staff that had given up their Christmas day were all helpful, polite and courteous at all times hence the one star. However, the food itself was very underwhelming and bland. I left most of my dinner which I never usually do. The turkey was beyond dry and there were no trimmings. Yes there was stuffing and one pale (separated from the bacon) sausage. So a 'pig not in a blanket' graced my plate. The white chocolate and raspberry dessert which sounded devine was sickly and rock hard.

There was no atmosphere at all - it actually felt like we were dining in an old people's home. Maybe that would've been more fun?

All in all, we have learnt our lesson and will stay at home this year.

Response from hempsteadhouse, Owner at Hempstead House Hotel and Spa
Responded 9 Jan 2020
This was the only complaint we received on Christmas Day amongst a host of wonderful compliments for the quality of our food and service throughout the day and I have already responded to these guests personally and informed them that I apologise for not meeting their expectations. I was however present on the day, aware of the quality of all of the food which was served and checked with their table that they were happy with everything and was informed that they were. We also made sure that their young child who was not dining received a gift from 'Father Christmas' as well as the three children who were as we always endeavour to provide the best experience for all our guests.

Managed to offload the kids and went for a long weekend in Kent. The HHH&S is a lovely boutique hotel housed within well manicured grounds on the edge of the Kent countryside.
The executive bedroom is spacious enough for two people. The king sized bed was comfortable (we've stayed in many hotels where this would have been a bad feature) and the room was cleaned well every day.
It's clear from the attention to detail that the management is very much involved in the running of the place. Breakfast is well laid out, ample and hot orders served by courteous, efficient staff.
The evening meal a la carte menu is good. If given the choice, pick the more decorative Lakes restaurant. We were put in the Brasserie and the music was too loud and other diners complained about this.
The spa is fine, albeit rather dimly lit and we were fortunate that there weren't many people there on the occasions we went down. Any more than about 10 - 15 people around the pool area and it's not quite as relaxing an experience.
The gym which has enough in it to give you a good work out but it's not particularly well ventilated and feels crowded with more than 5 people in it.
The hotel is a bit of a maze but is well enough signposted that you can't get too lost.
The gardens are well maintained, probably better than the more famous local tourist attraction at Sissinghurst.
If there for more than a couple of nights, I would advise eating out locally at the Dover Castle Pub, a 5 minute drive down the road in Teynham.
It's reasonable value for money and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We had been looking forward to visiting here for a while ... our stay was previously cancelled twice due to Covid but we finally got here Saturday and it did not disappoint! We booked a one night weekend escape so had dinner in the lakes and breakfast in the morning before our spa treatment.
When we arrived there was a little wait to get in as like us, other guests were waiting to check in just after 3pm. The receptionists were really friendly and helpful, told us what to expect and where the restaurants/spa/etc were and that if we needed anything do not hesitate to ask. Once we got to the room I noticed we had no slippers so I popped back downstairs and they were more than happy to grab me some. All staff we encountered over both days were very friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble and one staff member even brought my drink up to my room as my other half couldn't manage everything.
Our room was spotless (in fact the whole hotel was, we had no issues with cleanliness), we had all the amenities we needed, the fan came in very handy as it was so hot! Every time I opened the wardrobe you could smell the freshness of the robes which was very nice. We spent time walking around the gardens, the surroundings are beautiful with lots of flowers and water features. Lots of outdoor seating ranging from sun loungers, to benches and proper tables and chairs. We even had a couple of games of ping pong. When we went for dinner the service was very efficient, the waiter took time to properly speak to us even though the restaurant was busy and the food was nicely presented and tasted beautiful. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and my other half can be a bit picky and snobbish when it comes to food. Again, breakfast service was very efficient and the food tasted good. We had a swim after breakfast, the pool is lovely and very clean and we basically had it to ourselves as the booking slots meant there were only a couple of others in at the same time. Finally we finished with a full body massage, the ladies in the spa were nice and friendly and did an amazing job! The package we had was well worth the money and we are looking forward to visiting again. Literally can find no fault in our experience!
Also just to add - we went as a couple but there were weddings parties, lots of families with young children, groups of friends and a couple of elderly guests so this hotel can cater to everyone!

Breakfast was amazing and I would like to highlight Lisa who went over and above with a cheery morning smile on both mornings, even proving a pot of honey and lemon for a sniffly partner. It would be nice if breakfast could be extended to 10 am as we had to rush and noticed another guest also did! Despite being down with minutes to spare Lisa ensured that we were assured that there was no rush and we were able to relax and enjoy a lovely cooked breakfast.
Dinner in the main restaurant was amazing, my steak was perfectly cooked and the bearnaise sauce was scrumptious. Again our service in the restaurant was impeccable. Our host, Dan, was amazing chatting with us and ensuring our comfort throughout. He is an asset to the hotel.
The room was spacious and comfortable with a fab bathroom and the bathrobes were lovely and snuggly. while the tea and coffee facilities in the room were a good addition I would have liked to see some fruit juices and water available too.
The Spa by the Brasserie was most relaxing and I thoroughly enjoyed the hydrotherapy spa. I was a bit disappointed that I could not navigate my way to the outdoor spa but as the weather was inclement for the time of year, this was not a major problem.
It was apparent that most of the staff I engaged with had worked at Hempstead House for 15 + years and there was not a miserable face to be seen. This is the sign of a good employer who values the welfare and comfort of their staff as much as they value this for their guests.
Special shoutouts for Dan (Banqueting Manager) and Lisa our cheery ray of sunshine in the mornings.
Be afraid, be very afraid....for I shall be back!!

Disliked · My partner is sight impaired and struggled with the stairs as the carpet in the older part of the house is quite busy making it easy to misjudge the steps. It may be beneficial for some stair rods in keeping with the decorative era of the building to be fitted to make the edges more noticeable to prevent trips and falls.

Having eaten many times at the hotel prior to Covid, I was looking forward to finally staying! I’d booked The Ashby Suite for £240 including breakfast, and was hoping it would be the best room in the building being a ‘suite’. Upon check in, we were greeted by bags upon bags of people’s belongings directly outside our door! Inside, although very attractive looking, the floors were soaking wet where they had just been cleaned! Dangerously wet in fact. We had no tea or biscuits, so had to go to reception to get some. The hot water for the shower then wouldn’t work, so we complained and were told it would take 30 minutes to heat up properly. I was told I could use the shared spa shower instead if I wanted. As we had dinner booked, I didn’t have time to wait and didn’t pay the money to shower in a shared spa shower! Luckily my grandparents were in a room upstairs and I had to use their bath! Service at dinner was terrible (slow, uninterested staff) and the menu was nothing like my previous visits. Breakfast the next morning was even worse. I ordered scrambled eggs only to find it so over cooked that parts had turned to an omelette like consistency! My families breakfasts were mixed up, not one of them got the right meal. All in all I won’t be going back again! Not for £240!
