I stayed at Kalari Kovalikam for the 14 days panchakarma and was really disappointed with my experience. It is extremely expensive in comparison to other places and prides itself on it's authenticity towards its Ayurveda treatments. As someone well versed in holistic wellness and who has travelled to India twice a year for the last 27 years, it really didn't meet my expectations. The doctor spent maximum 2 minutes with me every day and if I asked questions about my treatments or about the process he told me to read the sheet of paper I was given or go to the library and read a book. He completely lacked empathy and seemed like he was there just to do a job rather than to genuinely care for his patients. I was left with little idea about what my body, mind and spirit was going to go through over the next two weeks. The property itself was 3 hours from Kochi so I was expected someone remote surrounded by beautiful nature. Unfortunately this was not the case. The property was next to a busy main road and I couldn't sleep the first night because of the trucks and horns throughout the night. The property is walled so you can't see anything outside the compound and it makes you feel slightly like you have voluntarily admitted yourself into a mental hospital or prison. The rooms were dark with little to no natural light. My room had two twin beds despite me being alone. It was full of Russian and European clients who had never explored or wanted to explore India and were happy to do their 2 week detox in a walled compound and return back to their country. I have been to many other Ayurveda centres where the doctors really cared for my wellbeing, took the time to explain the process and had not been westernised or turned into a resort for wealthy paying European/ Russian clients. India has an amazing warmth and positive energy that was lacking in Kalari Kovilakom. Ultimately ayurveda and holistic wellbeing is about balancing your mind, body and spirit. I was introduced to the owner after my stay and he didn't ask me once about my experience, just spoke to me about his busy travel schedule and lifestyle, which to me was example that the intention from the top was not in the right place. At Kalari, the lack of warmth, empathy, community, meant that it was like any old hospital, tackling simply your physical symptoms and completely missing out on your mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Kalari Kovilakom in Kollengode, Palakkad- India is probably one of the most serious Ayurveda Treatment Centers in the world; my personal opinion the most serious and effective one. Located in the above mentioned region of south India ,Kalari is operating on a 13-14 acre land of a 300 year old Indian Palace which has been used by the British as a garrison and military barracks for quite some time. Minimum stay for this exceptional treatment is 14 days under doctors supervision and maximum capacity 24/25 guests and great ayurvedic cuisine along with twice a day almost 3 hours long ayurvedic massage by therapists. Not to mention the 3 times a day routine yoga sessions. At Kalari you can not only rejuvenate your body but also your soul in this beautiful garden with exotic trees , flowers and small animals. It’s a life changing experience once you complete the minimum 14 days treatment and been farewelled in tears..The moment the car takes you to the airport after the 14th day, you easily might start thinking about the next trip..trust me !!! it was a absolutely wonderful excperience. The people working there are so lovely & honestly. The massages are .....just wow....but the treatments are sometimes a bit hard. But at the end, I felt like a new, younger person. Also the food is very good....everybody gets food for they constitution. Vegan.... without oil, sugar & spices. But be careful - it's not a luxurious wellness hotel. It's the real Ayurveda. The palace it's old & simple....so as the rooms. You can't go out the hotel area - but you have to walk a lot. So you make you're rounds inside the (quite small) hotel area. The hotel is with his 18 rooms very small & they have maximal space for 24 people....but when it's fully booked then it's quite tight.

This accommodation is as grand as you can get in a wellness retreat in this lovely enclave. The care and service is immaculate. You cannot book in for the weekend: minimum stay is two weeks. We came to detox from air mileage overload and were more than mildly surprised to see people from everyplace on the globe seeking rest and recalibration of their burnt-out bods and spirits. I loved the gardens full of medicinal herbs and trees, the centre point being an enormous old mango tree in which mischievous turquoise kingfishers played up a storm. We were cosseted behind a high wall which nullified most sounds of the outside cacophony. A peak over the fence revealed local women doing laundry in the lake with loud slapping as they beat their soapy clothes against the rocks. On arrival we undergo an Ayurvedic examination and based on my disharmony of the primary dishes was relegated a diet to redress the imbalances. My balance liked the morning treat called pasha Katter, a petite banana coconut cake served with a spicy fruit chutney. Daily yoga and meditation played a pivotal role in with lots of opportunities to connect to my inner child, steamed apples for breakfast, kid-like yoga poses, warm milk being poured over me and toying with paints and paper kept me from stimulation which borders on the fringes of my febrile mind. That being that, the whole package of quiet surroundings, yoga, meditation meant i fared rapidly towards my journey inwards.

I stayed for two weeks and was transformed. Never have I learned so much about myself and my body and how to provide perfect care for it. I'm so thankful I got to experience such an incredible change in my body and mind. People told me my eyes looked clear and bright when I returned... the oil and herbs treatments for the skin were amazing. I'll never forget. Thank you.

The bad: - The food really sucks (has to do with the Ayurvedic approach The good: - Great service with a smile - The best you ever did for your health - Capable Doctors and staff - Beautiful old palace Now, this is not a hotel in any way! It's a clinic and without wanting to go into details.. It's just magic what they do with and for you. If you aver felt you have to do something for your health or weight... Don't hesitate! go here!

Some years ago when my wife and I were checking out ayurvedic hospitals we were getting depressed by the condition and upkeep of ayurvedic facilities in India when we were told about Kalari Kovilakom. This is primarily an ayurvedic hospital in a beautiful, historic and green setting. The staff and doctors are well trained and although it is pricy we felt the time we spent there was well worth it. Luxurious setting and excellent standards notwithstanding, don't go there expecting a five-star spa. This is serious medical treatment (and some of it may not be pleasant) over two to four weeks and your treatment, time and diet are strictly controlled. Most evenings there is some entertainment provided by local cultural performers and it is surprisingly good and non-touristy. Over the days one also tends to strike up new friendships. Though time can pass easily depending on your mood and personal preferences, you may want to take plenty of reading material. There's no TV and going out of the Palace grounds is discouraged. It proved effective for me. My Glaucoma problem though not cured (they told me up front they had no cure) was completely stabilized for several years to the surprise of my eye specialist who had expected the eye fluid pressure to gradually worsen and had expected to have had to operate, neither of which has been necessary. Six years later because of some change in the pressure I'm going again next month. Please keep in mind my pictures in this review are SIX YEARS OLD

Hard to say whether the short or long term benefits are the greatest take away from a stint at Kalari Kovilakom. Was it the physical and emotional benefits of pancha karma, or learning about the needs of your body and mind? The beauty of the place or the return to inner peace and creativity that comes from total relaxation? The kindness and care shown from the staff, or the friendships that can form from the diverse group of people who sign up for this experience? Ultimately, it doesn't matter, they all add up to a life changing experience. I wish this gift for everyone. Even the booking and coordination of my trip was a great experience, so maybe the wonderful state of Kerala should be credited as well. Tijo from Karmakerala took great care of me from my first inquiry to my return home, including rearranging my travel plans on the turn of a dime without additional cost or complaint when I has a complication in my travels to Kerala, and checking in at various points of the journey to ensure all was going smoothly. The whole trip was a pleasure from start to end. I hope to return soon. Started planning my next trip there before I even left Kerala.
