Detailed Reviews
We loved this rustic place in an original Cyprus village with a typical Greek taverna just around the apartment. Clean , air-conditioned and comfortable bed. Will be back again.
Host owner - Sofronis - was very hospitable and went out of his way to make our stay memorable..

I hate giving bad reviews, but you need to be weary of this one.
First of all there was no electricity upon arrival in my apartment. The maintenance person was quick to appear. Out of 4 light fixtures in the kitchen floor (kitchen downstairs, bedroom and bathroom upstairs) only one had a light bulb and turning the switch on short circuited the whole apartment plus part of the neighbouring one(!). He was apologetic but asked me not to turn the kitchen light on again so as to avoid a blackout and, since it was the weekend, I had to live with it! So no use of kitchen, at night anyway. Additionally no outside lights worked for the whole complex and trying to make our way with no lights upon arrival from our outing at night was dangerous on the uneven cobblestones of the yard. Out of 2 light fixtures in the bedroom one actually worked and bathroom lights worked just fine (great, right?!)
TV had a whole A4 size posting pinned to the wall on how to make it work with its sat receiver. Needless to say, however hard I tried to follow instructions I only got static, so no tv either.
Do I need to mention that the advertised free wifi never worked for all in the complex? You get the picture.
It was February and the central heating was not working. The air condition did its best to compensate but after 5 hours, its noisy and dying efforts only managed to raise the inside temperature to 15 degrees Celsius (yes, I carry a thermometer with me), not a comfortable number.
I was pleasantly surprised to have hot water, even though if other apartments decided to use it at the same time its pressure dropped and you had to content with alternate hot and cold shots to your system.
Cleanliness was ok inside the apartment, but outside furniture could do with some dusting and bird dropping cleaning, but hey, with all the rest happening who would notice!
Design of the complex is very nice, great touches of old Cyprus architecture, tools and furniture, but owners need to respect their guests and keep this establishment in much better shape if they want people to return.

We’d stayed previously at Tochni Tavern and were under the impression, after booking via British Airways Holidays, that we’d be staying there again. Only after a few e mails between us and Tichni did we discover that you only stayed at Tochni if you had board booked. If you were self catering you stayed in Kalavasos.
We had to book-in first at Tochni and the follow the chef to Kalavasos and the accommodation. We had to park on the outskirts of the village as we were tol that we were not allowed to drive into or park within the village. We parked and followed the chef to a walled courtyard and then into the apartments he said were ours. It had a tiny kitchen and a toilet under a steep winding metal staircase leading to the 2nd bedroom. There was another bedroom on the ground floor with another bathroom.
My mother is partially sighted, my wife has severe asthma and mother in law arthritis and we said that this was unacceptable as no one would be able to negotiate the stairs at night if they needed the toilet.
The chef only spoke broken English but showed us another apartment which, whilst nit ideal, was better than we’d been offered.
It had a few steps up to the kitchen area where there was a toilet/shower room. The kitchen had a small balcony off if it. There was a steep wide wooden staircase leading down to a “mezzanine “level then another staircase down into a bedroom..off if the bedroom there was a bathroom with a door leading to the 2nd bedroom. As I said it wasn’t ideal but we decided it was better than the first.
The bedding and towels were clean and, being March it was cold enough at night to warrant heating. There were radiators in each room which never came in the whole time were were there. We relied in the A/C also being heat pumps which kept it just bearable-at night.
The kitchen was clean with a serviceable fridge but only 1 working power point in this level so if you wanted toast and tea or coffee you could only make one or the other. Not both at the same time. The toaster was a “George Foreman” type grill which worked ok-ish.
The cupboard with the plates etc in it only had 1 door and the other had the glass missing from it.
The A/C - heat on this level couldn’t be used as the power pint was faulty and covered so a gas heater was left which we didn’t have the nerve to use.
The stairs down to the lower level had a light with a blown bulb in it making the journey down treacherous. Also the snow detector battery was flat and beeped continuously. More about them later ....
The tv/satellite receiver was in this 1st bedroom and the instructions on the wall bore no resemblance to how it worked. We did manage to get it to work and the only English Channel was BBC world news !
Several of the lights didn’t work and the power outlets all were lose from the walls.
The joining bathroom was ok and shower was great with lashings of hot water and a “beat your brains out” type shower.
The extractor fan wasn’t mounted properly to the ceiling and had wires exposed. Also a cable with a connector block was tucked into the ceiling adjacent to the shower.
The other bedroom had a High vaulted ceiling which would shower you in cement dust from time to time. The lights over the bed were marked “garden lighting only” !
There was a door from this room out to a nice courtyard and then another wrought iron gate out to a back street. We used this gate mostly for exit/entry to the property as it’s all on one level.
We reported the smoke detect and faulty light and the “maintenance “guy turned up with a battery and a bulb. He couldn’t get the light to work and said he’d be back later.
He came back later, fiddled about with the fitting and then went outside to the courtyard then came back in and about 15 minutes later grunted that the light now worked. It wasn’t until a few days later we noticed the outside light was now missing and we suspect he’d taken it down and replaced the defective light on the mezz level.
On the whole, Takis House is sited in the middle if a traditional Cypriot village. It has just enough to give you somewhere to put your head down BUT needs some serious maintenance and TLC.
The view from the balcony is nice and a great place to eat breakfast in the morning with the swifts who were nesting under the balcony.
The property is NOT suitable if tourists have limited mobility or sight problems.
The village itself is beautiful and the people extremely friendly. The local restaurants are excellent especially The Retro Tavern.
There is a village store which is useful for odds & ends but AlphaMega is only one junction down the motorway and has a better selection.
If you book with Agrotourism, please check beforehand as you might not be staying where you thought !!

The village of kalavasos is in a beautiful location, fairly remote with a strong sense of community. The property benefited from good air conditioning and very fast internet but was let down by inattention to detail. The upstairs lights (in the bedroom) didn't work so someone had placed a table lamp strategically on top of the wardrobe. The TV didn't work or rather the TV worked but the satellite box didn't so there were no channels. In the kitchen there was a sandwich toaster but it had a European two pin plug on it as opposed to the 3-pin standard in Cyprus. None of these things were particularly important just they combine to give a poor feel. Although the house didn't feel damp (in the hottest part of the year August) there were a lot of damp staiins on the wall paper in the rooms. The guy who came from the next village to collect the payment was obviously only interested in promoting his restaurant (in the next village) and didn't care about anything else. I'm not going to repeat the name again here because I went to the place for breakfast on the first day and never went back after and it doesn't deserve any more publicity.
On the other hand the locals were very friendly and on arrival they made me a coffee while I was waiting to be shown my accommodation. It was also fairly central to the island and convenient for travelling around as I did to Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Nicosia and Famagusta but overall I much prefer the Greek islands.

You can't mark this place down for idyllic location, unspoilt beauty and quirky decor- whilst some may describe lack of functioning fridge, Internet or hot water quaint I would describe as annoying - if your website details these as being present you should ensure they are, the guy taking the cash couldn't have given less of a hoot, poor service. We were only there for 2 nights and so didn't affect us that much,if we'd have booked for longer I would have been seriously miffed.

We stayed here for 11 nights. We arrived really late because we got lost as there was an error in the instructions given to us by Olympic. We had to go to Tochni the neighbouring village to check in. We eventually found this only to realise that the owner was about to leave in his car. I think if we hadn't have turned up then there wouldn't have been anyone to show us to our accommodation. We had to follow him to Kalavassos and when we arrived someone had locked the external door of the Tente accommodation so he had to go off and get the key. First impressions were that the apartment (no 3) was very rustic and roomy. The air conditioning which is only in the bedroom was very noisy and kept us awake the first night so we didn't leave it on overnight. There is also an overhead fan. Luckily it was cooler in the nights in September. There was a significant damp patch with black mould growth on the bedroom wall and several of the lights were not working. The beds were very comfortable though. There was a coffee maker with only a 2 pin plug which couldn't be used and the kettle was the type you boil on the cooker (keeping with the rustic feel of the apartment), The shower was excellent always enough hot water and a good pressure. There was a disused jacuzzi in the court yard. Shame this was not operational but I'm guessing this was not in working order as they are not easy to maintain. Apart from these issues we enjoyed our stay at the apartment after all the building is very old. The only other annoying issue was the neighbour's dogs who were left out in the yard when they went to work and they barked constantly waking us up every morning - but still what do you expect if you stay in a village. The tavernas offered basic fayre and were cheap and friendly. We had breakfast in the Kings River taverna on the outskirts of the village which was very good. The local beaches are about a 10 min journey by car and Zygi harbour has a great little cafe. There was a pool for use with the accommodation but we never used it as it wasn't easy to locate.

When we arrived it looked like no one had been in it for months, the fridge wasn't on and they expected the children to sleep in the room opposite which was like another apartment across the court yard.
We were moved elsewhere.

Quiet but not isolated
Excellent accommodation
Friendly community feel
We tried two of the three places to eat they were both excellent
You do need a car to get about - if you get bored easily
Overall, we would thoroughly recommend Tenta @ Kalavassos
