I cannot speak to the guest rooms here, which I know are priced at the high end of a stay in McLeod Ganj.

My middle rating is simply because I cannot rate the rooms. I have eaten here several times

I can talk about the restaurant.

After 7 months in the area and eating at a lot of places, Deodar Villa's restaurant is a good find.

Menus in Mcleod Ganj are very similar faire so then it comes to has the best of the lot, who is clean, who has got the atmosphere etc. Pasta is very popular among restaurants here and Deodar Villa just added pasta on my latest visit as in I was the first to order it and not yet listed on the menu.

Bottom line, the best pasta in the area. I have had several other meals here and the food here is consistent and the kitchen might be the largest in town. Water is solar heated and this means plenty of hot water for washing dishes. Most places run on small in-house hot water tanks and this creates a water/health issue for many restaurants not only here but across India.

While Deodar Villa itself is new, the cook has been at it for several years and is clearly experienced. The dining room is small, but extremely clean and while a lot of local eating is in non descript utility sit-down rooms, Deodar Villa's small restaurant is a unique offering is modern glass enclosed, and contemporary design and has also just added candle light dining - a nice touch for the possibility of a quiet leisurely meal at a place with possibly one of the best views in McLeod Ganj.

Again, Deodar Villa is new, and has the luxury now of designing an overall reputation from scratch. If they keep the food consistency up and cleanliness and then develop a reputation for quiet and relaxed atmosphere in an otherwise noisy India, they could have one of the best and most unique restaurant experiences in the area for the international set that visits and often revisits Mcleod Ganj which is a major center for both Buddhism and the Indian home of the Dalai Lama.

I stayed here for 3 days and 3 nights with 6 friends in May. We had our share of concerns before booking the hotel as some of the reviews on trip advisor were not very favourable. However, we moved ahead and booked our rooms at Deodar Villa as we liked its location and quality of rooms. One of the big USP of the hotel is its location. We enjoyed some of the most beautiful sights of sunrise and sunset against panaromic view of the entire valley. We could spot Dharamshala Cricket Stadium from our balcony and could also witness the fascinating lives of monks living in the neighbouring monastry. Also, Its very near (10 mins walk) to the main market and Dalai Temple, however, the walk can be a little difficult for city dwellers who are not used to climb up and down the steep hill roads. Staff was extremely polite and hospitable. They arranged moonlit dinners and early morning tea parties with equal ease.I would also rate this hotel generously well on the food. From a simple cup of tea to chicken curry, they nailed it all. Rooms were clean, spacious and tastefully done with simple but good furniture. We had no complaints with room service either. In the end, the decision to stay here proved to be a wise one. :)

Clearly the reviews are mixed to both ends of the spectrum. The only consistent good review is the view from Deodar Villa, but, after one night I could not tolerate the noisy unprofessional staff. The view cannot save the guest from the unprofessional staff.

I do have suggestions for management and owners:

Deodar Villa staff/owners need lessons in Hotel 101
1.Read your trip advisor reviews and listen to your customers. They are telling you what would make you a success and what they want is a quiet, engaged professional staff that actually wants to work in the hotel industry and serve guests.

2. When the hotel is not full, pattern placing guests so they do not have to be side by side, put a room or two between them and not directly stomping above each other.

3. Above all, Show consideration for the quiet and comfort of your guests. Its been pointed out repeatedly that the top level acoustics amplify all noise. Keep the office noise to a minimum and do not yell and argue and smoke and spit all day and all night long. Better yet fire the managers who spend most of the time in the street smoking and yelling.

4. Answer room service phone when it rings. It helps if you are not out smoking or yelling and shouting at each other so you can hear your phone. The hotel should have a no smoking policy while on duty and here add no yelling, no spitting and hacking.

5. If you are going to offer Wi-Fi, get a service that works.

6. Treat women with the same respect you show the men.

Yes, Deodar Villa is a nice place in a good location and its expensive in this area, but if you are going to have a staff who never listens to the desires and needs of guests, then the view of the mountains is not going to save this place.

Worst experience ever. Without going into details, the bathroom still contained the USED toilet paper of the previous guests. The shower had not been cleaned in a long time, used soap with soap wrapper swimming in the drain. The staff made 8 attempts to provide a pillow without mould or blood stains.
The wifi worked only while standing out in the freezing cold on the balcony, and even then only sometimes.
We skipped breakfast which was served in a smelly room off the reception which most probably saved us a trip to the hospital.
Everything has its limits: even though we booked and were charged for two nights, we left after one night only.
The receptionist refused a refund for the second night as AGODA would charge them regardless of the reason for leaving the hotel. In fact, we used AGODA for the first time. There should not have been any booking fee until 9 days prior to our arrival. However when we checked our booking online, there was a charge of US 15 listed. After our departure we posted this review on the Agoda site and had to find out that they edited our review of Deodar Villa!
Never again Deodar Villa / never again AGODA!

I am in the restaurant of Deodar Villa. Nothing has changed since my last visit and this has to be the laziest and least caring hotel staff on the planet. When I came in, the staff was outside chattering and smoking. Someone followed me in, I ordered tea and got it and that was the last I have seen of staff except there is a group of them outside, still, chattering and babbling. Its easy to look around and see what needs doing, Clearly there is no detail in the cleaning and care is absent. Why am I back? I hoped someone connected to ownership or managing this hotel would see these reviews and make the needed changes. This place has the best location in this area in an otherwise quiet neighborhood. Quiet except for the staff here. Everyone here on Trip Advisor is saying the same thing. Useless loud staff that sits around on its lazy collective rear end wasting a great place that would be a great get away if anyone here cared and if they were quiet. Instead, Deodar Villa and its customers are just completely neglected by a full sized male staff that just babbles and soaks up the sunshine on the patio among themselves while making endless loud cell phone calls. I have never been anywhere at any level where the staff cared so little. The absentee owner needs to come here unannounced and simply fire everyone on the spot who is not working or doing their job and restart this potentially great place from scratch. Excuse me while I go interrupt the boys on the patio, so I can pay for my tea. I will have to go find lunch elsewhere, because its clear my being here is a bother to the staff and they clearly have very important things to gossip about. Silly me for wanting service and a little peace and quiet. I tried to give this place a break with my first review for the potential. They don't care. In fact, it seems like they care even less now.

The potential here rates a 4.

But:
For now, book at your own risk. The location, the rooms the restaurant are all very good as a facility. The roof tops of the second and third level offer great potential and beautiful outdoor settings for Meditation seminars or Calm Yoga programs or lectures. In Warm weather I could see this as a wondeful place under a full moon for local music programs or film screenings under a full moon. The Restaurant could become the best intimate location in the entire area as it already has wonderful view day and night. Right now, the limited off season menu tastes very good.

But:

Ingrid Traveler has nailed why its not really a 4 yet. The staff is a group of young guys that need training and they need to reflect pride in what can be a great place to stay. They need to quit texting and shouting into their phones and they need to be at work and match the quality of this great location and good facility. The top level of guest rooms is hopeless because of the noise of staff which is not helped by the acoustics of the cement across the street with actually amplifies all their yelling to each other and loud phone discussions.

Half of any good stay is the place, but, often the bigger half (if there is such a thing) is the staff.

When a napkin is used in the restaurant and stained it needs to be replaced not turned over. They need to care about how their hotel is presented and not take short cut so they can get back to texting.

They just need to spend more time on the details of room cleaning and guest service making sure guests have fresh towels daily, toilet paper and that food arrives on a clean tray.

The problem is its a group of guys who act like a group of guys hanging out instead of a professional hotel staff that matches the quality of their own facility and location for the guests.

But:

The potential is here. They can make this a great place if they are on the job instead of on the phone. When they start paying attention to the details of service and cleaning and understand how their noise and the general area acoustics impact the entire upper level of rooms they have that potential to be one of the top places to stay in the area.

As a bunch of guys, they are a nice bunch of guys, But: They are not yet the professional staff of a fine hotel. They need to get their act together and be a good hotel staff that cares about the details of their hotel and the full quality of their guests quiet and comfort and experience.

It really is the choice of the staff to make this a success or a failure. It will be a real shame if they decide not to care . And it would be really nice if they put some heat in the lobby and restaurant. It would make a wonderful first impression.

Lets hope all their next reviews shows staff have stepped up.

But: Right now, book this one at your own risk.

I have plans to come back. I will be staying two weeks. I like the rooms and the location and the restaurant.

But: I will check out and not come back if the staff still does not care about my visit, quiet and comfort. They are lucky, these are problems they can fix. They already have the facility and they are nice guys.

But: For success, they need to add the professional attitude, professional attention to the details and professional service that will complete the picture.

Except for one, the night crew at Deodar Villa should be wearing a "Do Not Disturb" sign. They are far to busy downloading loud pounding music the kind where the bass vibrates the walls, watching TV, gossiping and playing video games and riding motorcycles in and out. I noticed the tv, video, music and chatter was all at once when I considered dinner . I opted to spend my meal money for Chonor house and next time I will opt for a more professional staff at Surya or Chonor if I am going to pay these prices.

As a woman traveling alone, I opted for the top level as a matter of security. No quiet here, The Hall was dark despite lighting fixures and the lower levels would have been an isolated death trap with the unlighted stairs.

This is a nice place. It matches the Website pictures!!!!!! Its in a quiet neighborhood. Quiet except for the staff.

I should have read these reviews first.

I stayed here for a night. It offers magnificent view from balcony of rooms. Apart from this, it has 2 large terrace where you can get a glimpse of Himalaya and the valley. It also serves the purpose of open air restaurant. Staff were very courteous and rooms were very clean. Very close to marketplace as well.
