This is a small hotel full of character sitting above the main area of the town, and opposite the Dailai Lama's temple and residence complex which we could see from our Mythical Creatures themed room. Each of them have different themes. It was cold in the evening when we visited in February so the hot water bottles in the beds with the turn down service was a welcome touch. We wore our coats in the dining room which was an experience in itself. The food was good, but we were reminded of Fawlty Towers with the service which was good humoured and hard to take offence at. It all added to the unique character of the hotel. We also felt very good at helping to support the Tibetan community in the area as the establishment was owned by the Norbulingka Institute - (google it !!). Only two things to be aware of - extensive steps to the main building and the noise of stray dogs fighting during the night. I used ear plugs, which were still not effective. The dogs thing seems to be a common problem in the town. Also there is a step slope up to the hotel entrance(100 yds) , which our car was not able to get to once due to traffic congestion, so be prepared for that before the stairs to the premises. Small steep roads and lots of cars !! We did see other places with no such issues, and higher floors above street level, where I guess the dogs noise would be less. But think what you'd be missing.

A delightful hotel that is part of the Norbulingka Institute – so your patronage also supports a worthy cause. Be sure to visit the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) and the Institute itself which are both well worth a visit.
All the rooms are decorated in Tibetan style and are very cosy and have a/c, a fridge and a kettle. We thought that the bathrooms must have been recently renovated as they were very nicely done and seemed new. We think it was certainly worthy of a higher rating than ‘Simple’ as categorised by our tour agent.
The restaurant is good and offers the same range of Tibetan specialities as the numerous other restaurants in town. If you decide on waffles or pancakes for breakfast (not very Tibetan) put in a request to the staff the night before as everything is done from scratch and you will otherwise have quite a wait.
All the staff were very friendly and accommodating and spoke better English than we had been led to expect.
Our room was opposite the Dalai Lama’s temple complex and we enjoyed hearing the chanting from our room. There were also a number of monkeys around – mainly macaques but also a few langurs – to entertain us (& drive the local dogs mad because they couldn’t get at them up on the roofs).

The property is beautifully appointed with each room having a story and a different style of interiors. The warmth and hospitality of the property starts from the check-in itself, and the staff are so warm and friendly, and helpful. Little touches like hot water bottles in the bed each evening, add a wonderful touch of hospitality.

The property is well-located and really close to most of the sights and sounds of McLeodganj. The restaurant is alright, serving indian, international and some tibetan fare. The views are unique, ranging from the monastery nearby to the distant snow capped peaks of the Dhauladhar range. All in all, I would def recommend it, and look forward to visiting again soon.

Whether it is bringing hot water to the rooms or any other request placed they attend to it instantly.
Another plus point of this hotel is it is just a stone's throw from the market place and Dalai lama temple. The skyline which is yet to be launched is also very close .

We were there for 2 nights. The rooms are painted in themed scenes. Mine was birds. Lovely. I had a very large balcony. Didn't really use it as it was too cold. The air con to hear the room works very well. You also get a Hot water bottle in your bed. Lovely.

The shower is good. The accessories fine.

The breakfast seems slow initially then everything arrives at once. Excellent coffee. We had dinner the second night at the hotel and it was good and very reasonable. Take your own wine, beer and they will give you a glass to have it. No pressure as they don't have a drinks license.

Excellent location and a really friendly hotel.

Arrived late in the afternoon and was surprised that there were very steep steps to Reception, luckily a nice gentleman helped carry our luggage up. We were greeted warmly and offered a refreshing honey and ginger hot drink, which we enjoyed before we were shown to our room on the top floor, which was spacious with plenty of seating and clean, however the young girl who was explaining everything advised that renovation work was being carried out above our heads between 9am and 6pm and the restaurant was out of bounds. We could eat in our rooms ( order by 8.30 ) or in the relaxing lounge, seated on one big trestle table.
After coming back from a walk we noticed a strong smell, at first we though it cleaning fluids but then realised it was enamel paint ( we took photos ) and throughout the evening the fumes got stronger, to the point we didn’t enjoy dinner (which we had to have in the room because of the fumes). Other guests commented also. With flammable liquids just laying around there was no smoke detector in the bedroom, except for a blank bracket. The receptionist came with some extra milk and even she was breathless.
Throughout the evening the odour seeped into the room, from the open stairwell, despite the door being closed and windows open for air.
In the end we had no choice but leave for another hotel around 10pm.
Also don’t be fooled by the “ filtered water” in the bottle it was topped up from what I can only describe as a huge metal kettle carried from room to room by a lady.
My OH and I have spent the night in an other hotel feeling very nauseous and with acute sickness, which I believe was due to the strong fumes.
Complete waste of time and money.. I absolutely do not recommend this “ hotel” which did not advise our agents that renovations were underway when he phoned two days prior to our visit.

The guesthouse entrance is up a very steep narrow road and there are further steep steps to reception.
We were warmly welcomed with a cup of honey tea and our bags were carried from the car for us.
Our room was in an annex opposite the reception area. It was shabby and very basic but we accepted it and went out to explore.
The real problems started when we tried to sleep. The generator outside our window was off and on all night - I was told it drove the air con for the kitchen freezers.
Then the stray dogs who had been sleeping peacefully in the alleyway during the day came alive once it got dark and again at various times throughout the night and early morning. We asked the night receptionist if any other rooms were available but were told not but she would leave a note for the manager.
We spoke with the manager next morning and were moved to a much nicer room at reception level at no extra cost. Although it was still possible to hear the generator in this room it wasn’t so bad.
The dogs however are a permanent problem.
You should also be aware that there is building work ongoing on the 3rd floor which I believe was the restaurant.
Breakfast was taken in the lounge.
All of the staff we approached were very helpful but they must have been aware of the generator noise and hopefully something will be done about it.

The location is good if you want to visit specific places in Dharamshala. However, there are no views, and it is quite cramped in space.

The rooms have beautiful paintings on the walls but are quite dated. Water was leaking out of my bathroom.

It is well priced, well located - I did not eat any meals there so cannot comment on the food. Breakfast was not included. Staff is extremely friendly and hospitable which is a plus.

Would recommend if you want to be near the temple, which is their location advantage.

View of snow capped mountains from your room window. Quaint charming and great mystic vibes. Rooms are beautifully furnished in wood and surprisingly the bathrooms are very swanky. Service is courteous and after a long time I saw carpeted stairs :) their sun room kind of lounge is where I could spend months it's so beautiful with like a sky view . Waiting to visit again

Chonor House is connected to the Tibetan community around the Dalai Lama, and is beautifully decorated using Tibetan handicrafts. It is simple, but comfortable enough. The food is fresh and wholesome, but beware: portions are enormous. Tibetans are rather shy and service can occasionally come across as surly. All proceeds of the hotel go to the Tibetan community in Dharamsala and that is another good reason to stay.

Look at the Dalai Lama's website - there might be info there. We stumbled into a last teaching day of his that we'd not known about, which the Chonor House staff reported as soon as we arrived. The Chonor House staff also was responsive when writing directly to them.

The hotel can pick you up. They charge 1200 IR which is about 400 more than the regular taxi, but saves hassle. and regular taxi's are not in abundance at the AirPort. It Will take approx 45 minutes on a mostly winding Road.
