Firstly, their website did have an online reservation form but we were told at check-in that there are no online reservations. First-come first serve. So don't bother phoning or "booking" online. Hopefully they'll remove that feature if it's not honoured.
If coming in on the bus with other travellers, try to make a bit of a bee-line (rush) to the hotel. Ask for directions right away if needed. Most travellers are headed here as well & the day I went they booked up very fast. It was fully booked by mid-afternoon. IF you don't get a room your first day there, I'd recommend finding another near-by place and then come back the next morning to book a room here when other travellers have left.
If you have hot water in your room (not many rooms in India need it! But it's cooler up here near the mountains and you'll want it in the morning!) the water is heated by both water heaters & solar panels. It can take some time for the hot water to reach your room. We had problems our first night, but as soon as we mentioned it to the staff they were ready to bend over backward to help us get hot water working.
You can fill water bottles in the lobby for 10 rupees. DO THIS! There is a huge problem of waste in India with travellers buying a new water bottle each time they need a drink. There are no recycling programs so water bottles pollute the area. Please re-fill! It's the "Green" Hotel, afterall.
The Tibetan staff are kind and gentle hosts. If you learn a few words of Tibetan they will just love and appreciate you even more. They have amazing stories to tell if you ever chat them up and they have the time (most of them are refugees that escaped the Chinese in Tibet).
The restaurant had some of the best food we ate in all of India. All vegetarian, but even meat eaters we met there said the meals were so filling and wholesome that they didn't miss meat at all. Good prices. Good portion sizes. The restaurant is one of the more popular places to eat and many travellers stop in here for a bite. Also, good cafe items (hot drinks, coffees, and desserts). Wi-Fi and internet cafe are available.
This was our favourite place in all of India.
BackPackWithBrock also stayed at this hostel/hotel. It should be shown or featured soon on www.backpackwithbrock.com
The restaurant is also good and cozy with many kind of cakes that we all tasted.
Would recommend.
Also the manager gave us good recommendations for activities and help us a lot when I lost my mobile in the taxi airport ! Thanks !
If you want a good yoga instructor ! Please go and see shiva .. it’s 15 min walking close by the hotel and shiva delivers 4 classes a day ... it’s in ram house near Norbu hotel : the place is a bit difficult to find (ask the map to the hotel) but worth the view : best place in darhamsala to do yoga for us with a top view of the mountains!
Restaurant very good in all aspects. Hotel just average, but no better options at that center. Booked for one day, but stayed for two days.
We ordered variety of coffees. When the staff brought our first order we asked what is this. The staff answered latte order Kiya hai to latte hi hoga na... It was recurring. The staff also passed unprofessional remarks. We were stunned to see the callous attitude. Upon raising the issue, the owner casually said if you want to go you can go.
DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL!!
