My wife and I stayed at Howard House Hotel to welcome in the New Year and as we had such an enjoyable experience, we have the pleasure of writing this review. We arrived at the hotel during the afternoon on New Year’s Eve and left later in the morning on New Year’s Day, throughout that time we found the staff to be extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them, and they went out of their way to make us feel special. The hotel is situated in a very quiet rural location, it has extensive gardens and direct access to countryside walks (great for our black lab who stayed with us). Our bedroom was spacious and had a walk-in shower, bathrobes provided, a king size bed, a lovely settee on which to relax and watch the large flat-screen TV and lovely views across the gardens. One of the attractions for us was the menu offered in the restaurant on New Year’s Eve, we enjoyed an excellent nine-course meal and a champagne reception. The breakfast on New Year’s Day was also very enjoyable. I had a hearty English and my wife Eggs Royal from the extensive eggs’ menu. The quality of the food offering was extremely high. Overall, we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay a Howard House and we would not hesitate in recommending this hotel

Back in 2020 we saw a review in the Sunday Mail about the Howards Hotel and decided to book two nights the Escape Offer - 2 nights plus dinner £370. After paying the deposit of £50 we finally arrived in Sept 2021 after cancelling twice due to lockdowns. Communication throughout the booking / cancelling process was excellent and could not be faulted. We had read other reviews that had mentioned the hotel did not have a reception so when we arrived we waited in the entrance hall. Within seconds a lady appeared and stared at us as though we had just landed from Mars. I was tempted to outstare her but instead said we have a room booked and introduced ourselves. She continued to stare. At that moment another lady appeared who I think was the owner / manager. She just about managed to say hello while the staring woman went to get our key, pointed to the stairs and said your room is number 9. As all was going well I asked if we could book dinner – response was "come down any time" We had booked what was described as a Cosy Room overlooking the courtyard – on dear apart from the bed, which was ok, the rest of the room looked like a 1960s B+B – clean but in drastic need of updating. As I couldn’t find the Wi-Fi password I went to find the owner / manager. When I got to the entrance hall (read Reception) the owner / manager was welcoming a couple who I noticed had arrived in a rather nice sports car. Well blow me down she welcomed them like royalty and asked what time would they like dinner. They must have had booked an expensive room but alas I will never know. Lounge and Dining room are ok but in need of a refresh. Garden is very nice and quiet with some good seating areas. Both dinner (with a decent wine list) and breakfast were very good. Service was excellent throughout. On our departure we once again met with the owner / manager in the entrance hall to settle up. On reviewing the invoice we were a touch surprised to find we had been overcharged by £144. Apparently the hotel was using a new system and that had caused the error. A new invoice was produced and settled. To conclude :- I wanted to like Howards Hotel as the location, garden and food were all very good but alas they were all let down by tired and dated décor. While I appreciate the hotel is an old building, it is in desperate need of investment. Alas I wont be recommending the Howards Hotel to family and friends but I will be keeping an eye on future reviews.

We booked this as a stop over on our journey back from Cornwall and so pleased that we did. Beautiful small hotel in a tranquil setting. We had a relaxing stay with a fabulous evening meal and breakfast. Staff were exceptional, friendly and attentive. We had a slight issue with our shower which they were quick to resolve given the difficult circumstances :-) There are lots of walks close by if you wanted to explore further. We would definitely recommend.

Just back from three perfect nights at Howard’s House. It could not have been better. Situated in a tiny hamlet away from any noise and bustle. A small stream running alongside the road opposite the hotel. Beautiful. Our room had everything we needed. Very comfortable, good toiletries and robes. Breakfasts were really lovely - a large choice including eggs from their own hens and their home made butter. The evening meals were beautiful - both in presentation and choice. Really interesting combinations of flavours and textures. And the wine list - though small - was really interesting and full of sensibly priced wines. The staff were unfailingly kind and helpful. Although the weather was not great we were able to enjoy one afternoon tea in their beautiful garden. We will certainly be back - Howard’s House is a gem.
